Jungle Gardenia. Often referred to as "the world's most exotic perfume", the original Jungle Gardenia was a scent that captivated Hollywood stars of old, such as Barbara Stanwyck, Natalie Wood, Joan Crawford and Elizabeth Taylor. Jungle Gardenia was created in 1932 by the Tuvache company, which no longer exists. Despite the French name, Tovache was a New York company that used the name to compete with all the pre-World War II French perfumes that dominated the industry. Madame Tuvache is a character from Gustave Flaubert's famous French novel Madame Bovary. Bernadine Angus, the founder of Tuvache, often used the name Madame deTuvache when writing perfume articles for newspapers. When newspapers erroneously reported that Tuvache was a French perfume house, she remained silent. Bernadine was also an aspiring writer who managed to write a Broadway play (which, sadly, was pulled from the schedule after a week) and a couple of screenplays that were made into Hollywood movies. After Bernadine Angus and her husband, Howard, died in the late 1960s, Tuvache was sold. It was bought by the Swiss perfume house Germaine Monteil. In the late 1970s, the British firm Yardley of London bought Germaine Monteil and continued production of Jungle Gardenia. In 1989, it was sold to Coty's Jovan division and they made the decision to discontinue the perfume and use the bottles for a Jovan fragrance. Coty's reformulated version of Jungle Gardenia, which hit the market in the 1990s, proved to be a disappointment and was quickly discontinued. It looked nothing like the original formula and had a strong fruity smell. Today, Coty no longer owns the Jungle Gardenia trademark and is no longer involved in its production, but bottles of Coty and Jovan Jungle Gardenia are still sold on Amazon and Ebay. The original Tuvache fragrance, loved by so many, is sold under the Jungle Gardenia trademark. Always look for the trademark symbol next to the name, as there are many perfumes with the same Gardenia name but that have nothing to do with the original.

Hi Mona, another brilliant video. I'm into reading biographies of golden age actresses , the last one being Veronica Lake & I'm now reading Barbara Stanwick, so well timed as I love knowing about the perfumes. Would love to find Jungle Gardenia but think its a difficult one to get now. Looking forward to your next video. Janet

Hey boo 🤗 so no lie! I have been binge watching Joan Crawford movies and on Friday I watched a documentary where Joan speaks so kindly of their friendship! And here we are today! You are speaking about her! Wow you have Jungle Gardenia! I was able to smell it when it was under Tuvaché my neighbor was a collector of fragrances 😊 it reminds me of Fracas I remember the Tuberose!
