It was avant garde 112 years ago when it (Allegro barbaro) was composed by Bela Bartok for piano solo.

Back in the late 60s-70s, most groups didn't have record people telling them what to do all the time, they basically had autonomy to do whatever they wanted. And they did!

Wanna feel old? Carl was 20-21 when they did this. Now that you've listened to prog studio work you definitely need to listen to more live stuff now. When listening to the studio stuff the impression is, "This is all studio effects and multitracking, they'll never be able to actually play it live." Then you go and see them and are blown away that they can actually pull it off. The virtuosity is amazing.

Lee, I saw them perform this song in 1971- very intense and mesmerizing! The lineup was John Mayall, then Poco then ELP- concerts were more diverse in combining genres back then. Wishing you & your family well. ❤

@@L33Reacts I really loved John Mayall; back then Mick Taylor was in the band. Also loved Poco and their predecessor Buffalo Springfield, who I was too young to see (not allowed). And then when ELP came on, the audience went crazy. Another wierd thing about concerts at that time: sometimes sections of seats were removed so people would sit in a circle on the floor, passing a joint. Very wierd, since it was completely illegal. A lot of strangeness going on then. Rock ruled the airwaves then and the creativity was incredible. It's great to see this music remembered and appreciated.

This takes me way back to high school and college. I saw them live three times in the 70s. They were always phenomenal. I suppose they defined Prog well before that was even a label for the sub-genre. In my mind they were like Yes in every way except that they were just three guys on stage making a similar musical impact, though certainly they were unique. They created incredible performances that at the time was sometimes referred to as Classical Rock - as in the fusion of Classical music and Rock. But really there are numerous Jazz influences as well. Carl Palmer still remains one of my favorite drummers. Keith Emerson was all energy on stage. Greg Lake had a great voice but he was also a great guitarist and bassist.

I see people talking often about Neil Peart as the reference for rock drummer. I’ve seen Rush 6 time during their best period, and as much as I like Peart, I have to say that I think that people forget too easily Carl Palmer. His technique is fabulous, as well as bis creativity and stamina. When I was a teen in the ‘70s Palmer, Bruford where considered by many to the reference drummers in terms of technique in rock, and to this day they they’re the drummers that I enjoyed the most seeing live, along with Terry Bozzio (with U.K, Polytown or solo)

Along with King Crimson, this was the birth of progressive rock, especially as a concert experience. This is from their first tour, filmed by a Belgian crew who also produced programs around other pioneering prog bands including Yes, Genesis and Van der Graaf Generator. The takeaway was how high energy ELP were back then, even if it meant Keith's playing would get a bit sloppy in places.

It's great to finally hear something positive about ELP. For years, Rock-Critics have strained themselves into herniation writing pointlessly cruel, put-downs of this trio. ELP's stylistic scope helped to create the era of both Progressive Rock and Jazz-Rock Fusion. Don't listen to the critics suffering from terminal, recto-encephalitis, just give them a fair hearing and judge for yourselves.

"Barbarian" (Live) by Emerson, Lake & Palmer Fun Fact... #1... Keith was voted the greatest Keyboard player of all time in many polls at the Time. (Rolling stone for 4 years) Keyboard magazine launched in 1975. Keith was voted #1 for 40 straight years in their poll until his death in 2016 according to the obituary they published. ... Fun Fact #2... You get a glimpse of the original 1968 Moog synthesizer in it's original smaller cabinet. It is that thing with all of the wires & knobs and looks like an old fashion switch-board. It is on a table behind his Hammond and the keyboard sets on top of it. There is only one version Of Knife Edge where you can see him play it. ... Emerson, Lake & Palmer - Knife-Edge - 2nd version (1970)... This is before he took it back to be improved and put in a bigger cabinet. It has the old fashion tech of tubes that had to warm up and adjustments had to be throughout a performance to keep it in tune.

this is surreal. I play the Bartók piece this is adapted from... I learned it back in the days when I was trying to get good enough on the piano to play my own compositions. one of the reasons I dug it was exactly what you say... it had "fuck you" energy. It was written in 1911 and it wasn't avant garde by any means but it was MAF. E, L, and P are all monsters and they dial in to that energy... I actually wish they'd gone further. best to you & yours.
