Greetings from Germany: This actually is a pretty good series! What I really like is that they used this face mask that was actually found in the area and is in a museum now. One thing about the language: In the series the depicted Germans speak modern High-German.... the original kind of "German" would be unintelligible for current Germans. If those people spoke with us today we would not understand each other. And btw for the people who want to learn German: The translation into English is pretty good but the critical parts are not a literally translated (although possible).... you get the meaning but not to the full extend! Lots of interpretation... 😉 Addition: Arminius was killed by his own people.... it had been difficult to unite all those different tribes! Almost as difficult as uniting our 'states' for acts in our German 'senate'. (aka Bundesrat)

@@Eddy1938-b Oh, the "Romans" here who didn't understand the Germanic spirit. Arminius was assassinated because the others feared that he wanted to make himself king, similar to the treacherous murder of Caesar. But the Germanic tribes preferred freedom. And how can you "betray" someone who abducts you as a child, your parents threaten to murder you if you don't obey and oppress the people and the homeland to which you belong. And just funny that "Romans" complain about treason, there was always insidious treachery and intrigues in the roman empire. And the name Germanicus was given quite often, what did the owners achieve: burned down a few huts and killed a few insurgents, and then panicked across the Rhine. And what came after that: the construction of the Limes, i.e. capitulation. Later, Germans became emperors, the western empire was divided among them and the summit was probably the coronation of Charles as emperor in Rome.

Respect for what? They set up an ambush and then the Romans came back and slaughtered them. They lost just about every conventional battle with the Roman army. And they did not "stop the ambitions of Rome" -Rome had _no_ ambition to conquer deep into Germania. That type of military campaign deep into a wild frontier was very costly and the Romans did not believe there'd be any economic benefit in pursuing more territory east of the Rhine. The Romans did not conquer indiscriminately; there had to be something in it for them. It was quite a shame too. The Romans built highways, sewage systems, sophisticated architecture, minted coins and brought learning and education to their territories. Germania was a wilderness, no roads, no sewage systems or political organization, and the Germanic tribes were not broadly literate (which is why we still call them by the names the Romans gave them).
@themaskedman221 Жыл бұрын
@@aaronvarela89 "They only stopped when they knew it would be far too costly to do so. " Because a prolonged military campaign into a wilderness with no roads and long winters was extremely costly and the Romans believed there'd be no economic benefit in pursing more territory east of the Rhine. It wasn't because they couldn't or backed down -they just didn't believe there was anything in it for them. "the Barbarians sacked Rome and kept their freedom and now they run Europe." Total nonsense -the Western Roman Empire imploded from within as a result of economic and political turmoil which left the military vulnerable. It collapsed internally and then the barbarians moved into Roman territories when the Western Empire was on life support. The barbarian invasions were a symptom, not a cause, of the West's collapse.

Yes they might of gotten victory in 9 A.D cause Varus was a useless incompetent General who led 3 Legions to there deaths and be decimated and destroyed in the ambush where his Legions were cut off from fighting formation and had to fight in column formation and to be attacked from the front and the back which is known to be called the Varus Disaster which Struck Rome major mental and physical blow which ended the conquest of Germany and which led Rome to abandon its mission to suppress and subjugate the Germanic Tribes and the Romans didn't want to suffer the same mistake again but if rome would've won Germania would've been completely different and roman colonization and a bigger frontier of roman expansion I mean 3 entire Roman Legions decimated that's a lot of men killed and in only a matter of Hours and all the way from home only to be killed off in the forest and fighting in column formation and being struck from the back and front I bet the screams of the wounded we're terrible. But The Germanic Tribes might've won for a little while but it really didn't make them conquers They only Secured Romes Strength and might cause Germanicus arrives serveral months or years later to restore Honor to Rome and Avenge the 3 legions and bring death and destruction to retaliate for their transgressions against Rome and bring the scum to hell

@josephliuvaiigavarain29944 жыл бұрын
@followyourideas4 жыл бұрын
@josephliuvaiigavarain29944 жыл бұрын

@followyourideas4 жыл бұрын

They used german cavalry to take Gaul. The tribal rivalry in Julius Caesars time, pre civil war, nixed a greater Gaul. Gads, you really get an idea how ruthless war was then......in all cultures. Every civilization carries the seeds of its own destruction someone wrote. Our fate seems to be like Rome. The oligarchy squabbling.

They would enter in Germania at Will. It was Roma backyard. Only was not really profitable to conquer all Germany vs keeping It disengaged and at bay
