If not for the injury in the Preakness, the 2006 Kentucky Derby was a glimpse of a Triple Crown Champion.

Barbaro, in the words of the great Tom Durkin "sublime". I was at the Preakness that year to see him. We all know what happened that day, one which I will never forget. I don't know if I tell myself this to make myself feel better about the whole situation but I am a firm believer that things happen for a reason. In retrospect, it was no foregone conclusion that had he not gotten injured Barbaro would have won the Preakness, Bernardini ran one hell of a race and was one hell of a good racehorse. Being realistic who knows what would have happened. Instead Barbaro was injured. His undefeated record, his "sublime performance" in the Kentucky Derby and our imagination thinking up the what ifs have only added to his legend. Barbaro's inspirational and courageous story following his injury may have done just as much if not more for his fans and the sport then a Triple Crown would have, I like to think it has certainly done more for his fellow equine athletes. Following Barbaro's injury( and also the unfortunate and sudden death of Eight Belles years later), the horse racing industry finally began to take a hard look at horse safety.Tracks began to re-examine their track surfaces, many changing of to artificial racing surfaces. An enormous amount of awareness has been created and research done on new medicines and medical practices especially in regard to laminitis. Barbaro's legacy will always be one of greatness to me both on and off the track he will be remembered for having the heart of a champion.

He was our greatest hope for a Triple Crown winner we have had in many years. I know he would have taken it had he not broken down. I know he would have. No one could touch him. No doubts, he would have taken it. I still am in awe watching his races. I have a tribute corner at my house for him. A whole collection of Barbaro items and mementos. I miss him, still get tears. He was some horse.

Samuel Pérez García The Only reason Barbaro wasn't the runaway favorite for the Derby was that he wasn't tested. But after the Derby, where he completely destroyed some very capable horses, it felt like he was destined to be the next Secretariat.

I completely, totally, agree with you. Right as Edgar finally let him go Durkin was on it. Barbaro, poised in the clear as they move into the far turn... step by step .... then... "and HERE comes Barbaro, the undefeated Barbaro comes up on the outside and he takes the lead... as camera pulls back and pans ... beautiful... "as the field turns for HOME in the KD Barbaro TURNS IT ON !! .. and it is ALL Barbaro in a SUBLIIIME performance" he runs away from them ALL !" My God. it's perfect.

Man...why did Barbaro die? I bet everything that he was going to be the TC winner in 2006. At the Derby, he was STILL pulling away when he crossed the finish line and the field he was up against wasn't a weak field either. He went in 6-0 I believe. He was the modern-day Secretariat.

@decroo21, Bernardini turned out to be one of the best conventional dirt colt's in America that I've seen for many years, and has also become about the best and most sought after young sire in the business, too. That said, what Barbaro accomplished in his career spanning a very short amount of time is equally impressive. It would've been tough handicapping out a race with both Barbaro and Bernardini in the field. Like splitting hairs!!

If only thing's had not gone so tragically wrong for Barbaro in the Preakness. 2006, IMO, could've produced the most competitive head to head rivalry since Sunday Silence vs. Easy Goer in 89' in the shape of Barbaro vs. Bernardini. Both 2 of the most talented American conventional dirt horses to come down the pike in ages. Both's career record's speak for themselves. Even Barbaro's with a limited amount of race. But look at what both he and Bernardini won during their careers. JMO.

What I'm describing is... just turn your wrist under and you have idea, standing on the end of bone. A physical therapist on blog at time explained when trauma to muscles around bones they're weakened, then w/impact of running bones break.

there was a :48 sec video in beginning that showed first jump out of gate and 2 or 3 handlers taking Barbaro in hand. that video showed this: 2 or 3 men holding him, he stpped back on his right hind leg, and as he came forward againto his left front, the right hoof seemed to "flip" up and OUT of the deep sand, looking as if the hoof had turned under in the sand and he was standing on with weight on the short pastern, the long pastern is above it. I googled and saw drawing of the skeletal leg

Mine That Bird. There are many GREAT moves. Sec's Preakness - wherein he moved from LAST to FIRST (going WIDE) on the first tight turn at Pimlico was referred to by Beyer as a 'suicide move'. A lesser horse might have destroyed himself. But Sec did this with grace & aplomb. FROM FIRST to LAST (in 180 yards, I think), Sec grabbed the lead! A BRILLIANT MOVE by Sec, who made this decision on his own - a genius racehorse! - Ronnie T was a d#m.n#d shrewd jockey - he let Sec make the decision.

I just don't know Ruffian as well?....I know she was Big & graceful like Zenyta, Beautiful & undefeated, just like Barbaro. [IMHO (I realize this will be an unpopular Opin) Ruffian was 'over-pushed' by her owner/trainer/jockey etc].And for WHAT? greed? Arrogance? I know Ruffian was a beloved, great racehorse who has many devoted fans who love her dearly! I hate that both Ruffian & Barbaro destroyed themselves in efforts to please the people who profited from them. Very VERY Sad! Heartbreaking!

I disagree w/you. Certainly Secretariat is the Greatest Racehorse we've seen so far (tho others say Man O War was #1 for 20th cent). And I saw the spirit of Secretariat in Barbaro as he battled throught the CROWD of horses, and blew away the rest of the field in the stretch. I'd definately assert that Barbaro was indeed SUBLIME & this was a GREAT K/Derby - (even if not the greatest) - And Barbaro was amazing! ALL HEART!

I am just saying that this is the "greates move" in horse racing by Calvin Borel. I am not saying Mind That Bird is the greatest horse. I know Secretariat is the greatest horse, one of only two to run 1:59 at the Kentucky Derby and who still hold the fastest 1.5 mile in history, the '73 Belmont with a 2:24 record winning by 31 lengths. Yes, Secratariat was the greatest horse, but the greatest MOVE was Borels in the '09 Derby.

Well said... and yes, divine all around. Watch Son of Secretariat, Risen Star in 1988 Belmont, call by Dave Johnson, whom I do love, but coming out of the final turn into Big Sandy, Risen Star is well in the lead and as he widens Dave is busy calling positions of other horses. But he FINALLY really unloads on what is REALLY happening, and it is what he says from then on that had me right out of my chair choking back tears of joy !

@kerkhoff1 sad that horses are 'started' so young, when they may not necessarily be ready physically. IDN, Barbaro was Beautiful Graceful Talented....what if he had been started later? Maybe the exalted Trip Crown should be held for 4 year olds? Of course I realize nothing will change....but how crushing to watch Barbaro - [who looked like Secretariat, as he broke from that PACK of horses & FLEW to the finish!] - mortally damage himself in the Preakness! What a stupid, tragic waste!

@sisu212121 I hate to see horses WHIPPED RELENTLESSLY to perofrm - it's awful! If a horse can't win a race, what's the point in FLOGGING it? REF - Sham was FLOGGED by Pincay in each of the 73 Trip Crown races - FUTILELY! because Sham was unable (PHYSICALLY UNABLE) to outrace Secretariat. He was FLOGGED by Pincay to force him to peform - it's absurd. Either a horse is capable of out-racing the competion or it's not. NOTE: I am referring to RELENTLESS use of whips/force - it's WRONG. Period.
