i will tell you, that as someone who absolutely LOVES most of The Witness, the ones toward the end of the main game that have flashing colors/lights or move around are absolutely fuckin terrible. they don't have new ideas, they're just hostile to the player. and then right after those you get some of my favorite puzzles that are really clever and have new and cool ideas.

Huh, the colors force you to identify the broken part of the screen, and the colored lights force you figure out color subtraction. It 'sall good, man.

@@A-Milkdromeda-Laniakea-Hominid The flashing ones I'm talking about don't have any element of color subtraction/color mixing in them; they're just seizure-inducing. You can literally solve them by simply taking a screenshot. The flashing adds nothing other than hostility to the player. The parts with actual color-mixing puzzles, i.e. the building with the elevator next to the mountain, are really good (apart from their complete inaccessibility to colorblind people), so don't get me wrong about those either.

@DontMockMySmock We're in agreement about the color subtraction part. As for taking a screen shot to solve the broken panels, yes, that's one way since the trick is to discover which tiles are flashing in unison and from there deduce what color it is from the half broken tiles. Screen shot will reveal it but not really how it's meant to go. Then the following one (there's only a row of a few that bother you so much) has no half broken tiles plus a "tetrominoe" that must be built and color coded. I just don't see it as "ran out of ideas" I guess. It's more like one of a many cool ideas. By revealing my age I can say I'm used to flashing fluorescent colors since Atari 2600 and later Commodore used to flash like that by design lols.

@@A-Milkdromeda-Laniakea-Hominid the puzzles are ok puzzles on their own without the flashing. but why are they flashing? the flashing, like I said, adds nothing. that's the part I'm objecting to. it is unnecessary to making the puzzles interesting or good, while also being hostile to the player. replacing those panels with still screenshots of themselves would improve the game for everyone, except I guess you, since you're apparnetly a masochist for flashing atari 2600 colors. as far as I can tell, the only reason jonathan blow would want to add the flashing is because he wanted to add "photosensitive epilepsy" to the list of disabilities that disqualify you from completing his game

@DontMockMySmock It's just one of many ways the screens are .malfunctioning. That's it. The other ones that have "screen burn" or wonky "h-hold" settings are cooler. It just feels like you're overbashing 3 puzzles. Which is your perogative. I thought it was fine and interesting (but yes: also a bit annoying.)

As much as I enjoyed this video, I’m one of the ones who had an amazing experience playing this game. It’s really cause I’ve been a puzzle game fanatic my whole life. I thought the puzzle designs in this game were some of the most genius designs I’ve ever played. And I actually did experience a sort of zen like state while playing. Meaning I’d forget everything else in the world and it was just me and the puzzle. Different strokes for different folks I guess.

Problem with streaming it with an active audience. The way Barb interacts with his chat as well. Hard to imagine him just sitting there and chilling with any pen-and-paper style puzzle game. And that’s before taking about the non-disability friendly parts.

Agreed, but there's a lot of inaccessible and intentionally annoying parts, definitely intended to test your patience. In a world where everything is become more fast-paced, it can be a virtue to have the ability to slow down and just take your time... which of course is negated when there's timed puzzles. I completed roughly 99.5% of the game. I missed like 10 environmental puzzles and then it just became too boring for me. This game could definitely have benefited from better game design and achieve the same "take your time" energy.

So I've always been curious about the type of person who enjoys puzzle games but hates the witness, and now I have an idea of what that looks like. I really like the "ah hah!" moments and connecting the dots on how these rulesets work, which this game has that in spades. If you're the type to prefer working towards a goal outside of just completing the puzzles or the type to like having all the pieces in front you from the getgo, it's probably OBNOXIOUS. Doubly so if you don't care (or can't, with a chat breathing down your neck lol) about the artsy portions and just wanna play a game.

53:45 Fun fact, a part of zen (or at least something that was a part of zen) was that you would try to meditate, but then your teachers would hide in bushes and jump at you at random times to hit you with a stick. This would lead to the monks constantly being on edge. The end goal of this was to get them to stop worrying and just accept that it will happen.

i got one of the secret endings the first time i played, but its the ending you can get pretty much immediately after starting. i stumbled on it kind of at random, and it REALLY didn't make any sense lol. the devs intend for you to get it on your second play through. the cherry on top though was when i tried telling someone that i got that sun ending on my first play through, and they unloaded on me calling me a liar because "no one could ever figure that out on their first play!" that about sums up how irritating fans of the game are. also, don't forget that the game has NO accessibility!!! I have a hard time hearing, and i wanted some kind of accessibility for the audio puzzles (something like Tunic has). i checked around, and the best thing i found was a post on steam from the dev saying "look up the solution to audio puzzles if you are deaf." The dev pretty pointedly explained that there will never be accessibility for the game, and if you are disabled in some way that makes the visual or audio puzzles impossible, then either don't play the game or look up the solution online. Color blind people may also find some puzzles just outright impossible

I loved the game in the beginning, while it was more conventional, but quickly got completely lost when shadows, far away objects and sounds became involved. I was only able to play at night without sound, and i literally could not see or hear the solutions, so i solved all i could and then abandoned the game. Don't regret it to be honest, I doubt i would have been able to slog all the way through even without the handicaps stopping me. It gets very monotonous after a while. Probably would have liked it more on pc with headphones though.
