I'm pleased that this is allowed in competition. They should allow the same for classical and romantic cello repertoire. Music is all that matters. Conventions be damned. This is beautiful.

Impressive playing - hats off! Please help me understand something: Why would you play this on a double bass in E minor - a whole step HIGHER, in actual pitch, than what you get playing the piece on a cello in the original D minor? Playing the piece on a double bass would make sense if you made use of the lower range of that instrument. It would create a whole new and very attractive sonority.

It's because her bass is in solo tuning (F#-B-E-A). She's playing it D minor (because of the fingerings it's best to stay in the original tonality and octave) on the fingerboard but it sounds in E minor because of the tuning. Solo strings are used because they project more and require less strength to use. Hope that's more clear for you!

Neat, cute, but what's the point of turning the bass into a solo instrument? In music, the cello and the violin are designed for this function. He looks so unlucky with that coffin, it's bad to look at him. It seems to me that the fluffed cellists are converting to solo bass, but that is rape of the instrument in my opinion. It's a technical challenge, but doesn't really make much sense.
