Splice the two ends using a turnbuckle. It's pretty easy to do and, even though it's a bit more expensive, you can tighten the wire as it slacks over time without having to re-stretch the whole thing.

Just a few suggestions: First, get yourself a barbed wire dispenser, instead of carrying that spool of wire back and forth along the fence line. Most fence and farm supplys carry a "Spinning Jenny" wire dispenser. I use a special barbed wire dispenser I got at Northern Supply that attaches to my Quad and has an adjustable built in drag brake to keep it from "back spooling". I have also adapted it to fit my truck's receiver hitch. I can tie it off and drive it down line on my quad or plug it into my truck parked at one end and walk the end of the wire down line without carrying all that weight. If you can't get a dispenser, I've seen the cowboys use a steel stake driven into the ground through a used steel plowing disc with the spool placed over the stake and cradled in the disc...works just fine. Another way is to drive a 16d nail into the post sideways to the line of stretch at 36" height and take a 3 foot piece of 1-3/8" tubing run it through the spool & hook it on the nail. One person holds the pipe and spool onto the nail, level, while the other person pulls the end of the wire down line. Second, make yourself a "story stick" with the heights of each wire marked on it from bottom to top. Just stand it up next to each post on the ground to accurately mark each post, without fumbling around with a retractable measuring tape. This works great when you have lots of posts to mark. Third, buy yourself a good fence pliers (at almost any hardware store) that has an inside and outside wire gripper, a cutting groove, a staple hook / puller and a built in non slip hammer face. Finally, I always attach my wire top to bottom, since a properly stretched barbed wire run still sags downward, but then it does not snag on the wire below it. Diamond Rim Fence, AZ Contractor

Michael Waterman a spinning Jenny is for electric fence wire which weighs a lot less. Barbwire spools wouldn’t work, they are to heavy. I do agree there are better ways to dispense barbwire, but for the purpose of this video, it’s about the wire and how to install it. Red Brand the author is the wire manufacture. Their intent is to show only their products.

I have found your how too videos helpful and will be putting the lessons to use on my little piece of Texas Hill Country. Have that pesky hill country wild growth to deal with to get line of sight from marker to marker 859 ft away. I have my work cut out for me to get the 10+ acres ready to homestead. Fences first! Wish I was working in soft soil like you all are in your videos!

Ha ha, I am not complaining, just complimenting. Now that being said, I am 100% disabled and was struggling with wheel chair and or crutches and a walker until Jan 2017 when I was blessed to get legs back walking without pain unless I overdo it, Emergency back surgery sucks as well as a spinal cord injury. That fenceline I was working on has really been a chore, but it is getting done. Now there is a firestop running through about half the Texas Hill Country rocky wild growth along it. The docs still have me limited and won't release me to drive the FEL Ford 5600 tractor to get working on the fence line again. Once again, thanks for the how to videos, they are helpful.

Start on "tie in end" with the barbed wire in a barb wire caddy(easily home made with 1 5/8 pipe. Grab end of barb wire and walk it to the opposite end. This works much easier than 2 people walking a heavy roll of barb wire across a stretch. This can be done by 1 person as well.

I've done a lot of fencing, too for myself and have seen what lasted and what didn't. The best fence I have ever built has 4 in diameter posts for end posts and braces with 2 in. Pipe for horizontals and has two brace posts and the vertical end and brace posts are concreted in the ground too and I will pull each strand until it breaks, that way you have all the stretch out of the wire. I will stretch the top wire first, and I will never put my hands or body next to or on the stretched wire until I have some of it tied to several posts in the middle of the stretch, if that wire breaks it will definitely draw blood on you. You can walk down along your wire after you stretch it with a t post and pick the wire up and move it over with the end of the tee post. The entire process of building the fence is no better than the end posts or corner posts and the braces. Sou if you want a fence that lasts 50 years in a climate where it rains 40 inches of rain a year, don't use railroad ties, or cedar posts, but use thick wall steel, not rusty and thin steel pipe, in concrete or one can use wood posts if they are 8 to 12 inch in diameter and are called hedge, bois D' ark, or Osage orange all names for the same tree, I have seen them that are 75 years in the ground and still good in Eastern Oklahoma where the ground is not frozen very deep or for very long and they get an average of 40 inches of rain per year The red brand wire has good sharp and long barbs and are closer spaced than anything else I have seen

I always wrap twice around end post, tie a termination knot the 6 wraps around the wire. No loose wire that way.
@arlinsmith9964
@arlinsmith9964 5 жыл бұрын
Need double wraps on end posts and like has already been said, wire should pull from the center of the post not off the side, the way you did it will loosen with time. You also say "don't overstretch" what do you think that loose wire will do the first time an animal hits it or a snow drift sits on it? All the stretch you failed to remove will then show itself and the wire will be nearly on the ground.

@miciahk

At 1:24, I not you are carrying the roll of wire, sometimes, this has to be done however, the way i do it is, I put my hay spear on tractor, put my roll of wire over the spear level and roll the wire where it rolls off the roll over the top and we drag the end of the wire to our tie off or pull post with hand if not far or with side by side utv if a lot of distance. We nail that off on our pull post then use the tractor as an anchor to stretch strain of wire from. We then just go to each wooded post and loose stable at the hight we want seeing that we have already tensioned wire to tension we want then they come behind us clipping the T post where the wire lays as it falls between each wooden post.

There is a special "cap" that can be installed on the top of each of the steel posts. They call it a fence barbed arm and can be found at Lowes.

First.... use a Golden Rod for tightening the wires.. much faster and easier ! Second.always install the top wires first...this way they dont hang up on each other. Third.always .always install a fence.." if possible " after the corner posts have had a chance to settle . Here the posts have just been installed.....they will likely pull out if a lot of tension is applied. Allow one year before installing or tighten the wires when the posts are still frozen in the ground....Spring time. ( if it freezes where you life ) I noticed your end spice is off sided.. instead of centered. If they are all on one side of the post.most likely the tension of the wires will turn the post in the ground when its wet......rendering the braces worthless.

The video states that "make sure not to over stretch" yet they don't say how to determine proper stretched tension or even what proper stretched tension should be for the various gauges of wire and type. They refer to sag at one point but that is not dependable since sag varies with length. I heard 250 lbs tension is appropriate for 12 and 15 gauge wire. Tension can be estimated from your applied force times the stretcher lever dimension in feet. Nor do they mention how to determine brace size, post size and post depth for various fence heights and lengths. And I definitely would not trust the demostrated wrapped wire splice to hold in my cattle. I recommend referring to the methods in the USDA-NRCS Technical Guides for proper wire wrapped splicing, tie-offs at braces, brace construction and all other aspects of barbwire fence installation.
