Good to see you back in Charleston. We met at the Civil War show in Mount Pleasant earlier in the spring. I very much enjoy your content and learn a lot from you. I do unfortunately have 1 criticism. When you said "One of the most historic places in the entire city...... the building right behind me, which is the customs house." You're at the wrong Customs house. You are correct about everything you said in regards to how historic the Customs house is. However, the Greek revival Customs house you are standing standing in front of is the "New" Customs house. It wasn't completed until 1879. The customs house you were referring to is actually some 4 blocks further down east bay street at the corner of east bay and broad. Today, it is known as "The old Exchange and Provost Dungeon." It was opened in 1771. Not only was it the customs house, but it was also the capital building for a short time. The bottom level was used as a prison while the British occupied charleston during the American Revolution. South Carolina ratified the constitution in there as well, and it represents 1 out of 3 buildings that still stand where each of the original 13 colonies ratified the constitution. The old exchange is now a museum and open for tours. If you have a chance to go through, it's definitely worth it. You clearly did your research, but google maps got ya. Lol. Also my wife loves Alabama White BBQ sauce, I did ask her to move out when I found out. Haha.

@Blake-h8x Thank you so much for letting me know about the Customs House. I've been to the original one but didn't realize it at the time. I stand by what I said about the Alabama White Sauce.

Good to see you so close by Dr. Wilder! My great-great-great grandfather fought for the Union Army with both the 8th Missouri(1st three years) and the 10th Illinois. He was killed just a few before the end of the war in the Battle of Rivers Bridge, not too far from where you are. I found your channel after leaning of his service and I had the pleasure of adding his picture to the book they have in small museum at the battlefield park. If you have a couple hours to kill it’s a rather unique location with some nicely preserved earthworks.

Good video and enjoyed the BBQ review. Been to Charleston three times but never thought of it as a BBQ place. Always focus on the seafood since we can’t get good seafood in my hometown. The boat ride to the fort is quite expensive for a family and the air conditioner on the boat is prone to not working. Last time we rode it, it was a sauna on the boat due to the broken a/c. No, they didn’t discount the trip to make up for the misery inflicted on their customers. However, You did the same thing with your video that many others do, which is to hide the fact that Ft. Sumter was modernized. Been to Sumter twice. Was disappointed the first time because in spite of all the reading about it I had done, and photos, I didn’t realize that it was modernized. It seems every source and everyone who makes photos or videos of it, hides the modern part of it. The modern part is part of its history too and it’s interesting. Its history didn’t stop with the Civil War. I like my history to be accurate and complete. Take care.

Shiloh national military park is surrounded by BBQ within 10 miles of the battlefield. The River BBQ Company in Adamsville, TN, Redwood Hut in Counce, TN, and The Ribcage in Pickwick TN. All are great establishments. If you are after the mom and pop appeal Redwood Hut is great. Just call to check the hours before going. A very unique place is The Outpost in Pickwick, TN. It has an ice cream parlor, rooms to stay overnight, full service restaurant, everything is old fashioned. All have great BBQ.

Former South Carolinian and current Alabamian here. Ultimately I agree with what you said. Especially about the mayo sauce. 😂 North Carolina has had the best BBQ and vinegar is the way to go.

I enjoyed seeing the fort. I am definitely a sweetened red sauce girl although i have not tried mustard or vinegar sauce. I really like vinegar so i might like vinegar based sauce. Mayonnaise bbq sauce ugh it sounds horrible. I don't even like mayo. BBQ sauce with it would be a big hard no for me! I agree Alabama should get disowned & kicked out of the Union. When you said it was hard to get an A from you reminded of a psych class I took. First day Dr Fisk said to the class I don't give A's. My heart sank. I was starting that semester with a 4.0. I thought there goes my avg. I got an A in the class & continued with my 4.0 I was happy & relieved😸 i really liked this type of video. I hope you continue with them

Dr. Wilder: On the one occasion I was in South Carolina, the group went to a barbecue buffet. The steam table had quite an assortment of pork ribs, beef ribs, chicken quarters, sliced brisket and pulled pork. When you check out local barbecues, do you ever go to buffets or just pulled pork sandwich places? Respectfully, W.S.

Good. For myself, I prefer shorter ones like this for breaks when I don't have much time. It compliments the battles. for these brevity is what I would push for and if one must suffer a little, I wo8uld say the BBQ, but keep both.

Given the number of hogs and cattle the ANV stole when Lee invaded Pennsylvania and then retreated back over the Potomac River, the rebs had enough barbeque meat to carry on the War of the Rebellion for an addition two years
