Beautifully played on a beautiful organ. I am reminded of Matthew Arnold's poem, "Lines written in Kensington Gardens": "Calm soul of all things! make it mine To feel, amid the city's jar, That there abides a peace of thine, Man did not make, and cannot mar."

Many people don't understand pieces associated with choirs or orchestras have to be played at a different pace on an organ. Pauses are crucial and Richard gets it totally. What other piece could have been chosen to underscore the horrifically violent scenes of 'Platoon' with its serene beauty to emphasise the total wast that war is .... RIP all those who gave their lives that we should free. We WILL remember them.

Cada vez me convenzo más de que el órgano es el mejor instrumento! Hace más imponentes todas las obras! Aleluya por su creación!

This is one of my favourite pieces for organ. Though, I believe, originally written for strings, I much prefer it played on a nice pipe organ as this give the piece the gravitas that it deserves. Beautifully played, thanks Richard.

I am always amazed at how the length of this piece varies. You play it in a very efficient 7 minutes 14 seconds. Marin Alsop conducts it in 7 minutes 45 seconds. Leonard Bernstein, her main influence, conducted it at a full 10 minutes! Toscanini conducted it in 7 minutes and 13 seconds at the premier of the piece at NBC, very close to your tempo. Andre Previn conducted it at a lengthy 9 minutes 34 seconds. I usually play it in about 8 and a half.

@@beautyinsound Thank you! I've been over to listen to that one as well. Very moving! Is this what is called a transcription? (Sorry, my musical knowledge is limited to what I was able to glean from accompanying my kids to music lessons years ago.)

Yes - it’s an organ transcription. It was originally written for a small group of string instruments.

Are you affiliated with Arundel Cathedral? The console looks similar in setup to your Haupwerk setup. Lovely recording, organ speaks beautifully with a splendorous reverb. Very soothing.

Too fast. Used to play this on the organ at OSU School of Music and always took it slow and more dramatic. Loved when they used the original string version on the Simpsons after Marge on steroids beat up all the guys in Moe's Tavern.
How to leave an organist SPEECHLESS..
