@fabzacres-blackcat2 жыл бұрын
Ash is prone to barber-chair and sometimes violently ... IF you happen to be directly behind it when it goes you might be leaving this mortal coil. Fortunately this was a “slow-burn” Barberchair and no one was injured 🤕. A chain or heavy strap affixed above the felling cut is an effective option ... It won’t stop the tree from splitting up the center but it will “contain” the potential for injury. A lot of these ash are dead from EAB infestation and the center of the tree is hollowed-out. A plunge cut is of little use in this situation as there is simply NO wood to plunge cut! Thanks for watching

Looks like a deliberate attempt to create a barber chair. If there was a notch, the backcut was higher than the notch, which increases the chance of barber chair. If deliberate there was likely a cable in the tree to finish putting it on the ground.

Something’s not ok on that face cut. I would have liked to see both cuts actually, that doesn’t look like a hard leaner from this angle. Did you use a bore cut? Looks like this was done on purpose to make a video.. good example however of what can happen with improper techniques, appeared that the face cut was too narrow and closed before the tree was committed to the fall.. they can also fly up like that and then jump off to the side and land on the cutter, thus the danger.

@@MerleUnchained Yes ... the 4th “generational logger” who commented here about the need using “heavy equipment” was sadly mistaken ... Ash is prone to barber-chair when leaning in the direction of fall , especially if they grow with the canopy also in that direction - just so much weight that the timber shears like you see here ... A possible solution is a bore-cut , however when the inside is rotted out this becomes a non-option ... When doing possibly compromised leaners (and especially ash) a heavy-duty ratchet strap or chain is affixed above the cutting such that IF the tree does bbc it will be held together and other methods employed to getr done ... I do not comment on others cutting of trees , for one , you are not physically there to SEE what is going on and secondly I’m not an armchair QB

It's so annoying that this is even possible... much more enjoyment could be had doing tree work if you didn't have to factor in the possibility of this happening. You either take the chance that a crispy tree or infamous species (looking at you, Ash) does this, or you have to do a cut that I don't think anybody is 100% comfortable doing (the bore cut) to prevent it. Ugh.
