Same for the prior point of D-va being aged up. The implication that Blizz aged her up to adult to dispel the implications of her being sexualised when they were fine with the until-that-point state of her being basically a child soldier?

Honestly, seeing NSFW content (or any unofficial/fan content in general) of a character has never affected my perception of that character in its original media. It's not something I've ever really thought about or realized until now, but yeah, I find it pretty easy to separate fan portrayals of a character from the actual character. I don't know if this is the case for most people, but I'm kinda curious if it is or not, or like, what the stats for it are.

same for me for the most part, i'd guess that for a lot of people it depends on how invested they are into the source material of said character. i was a die-hard fan of barbie movies as a child and watched them all the time, so when i watched the barbie girl music video it didn't really change my perception of barbie and confused me when it did for my classmates, who weren't as much into barbie as i was. perhaps for most people, the less they know about a character, the more likely they are to have their perception of them changed by fan-made content they happen to come across

I feel that's a bit of "survivorship bias". Like, I imagine the people on Viveros channel are probably people that don't care too much (or care in more.......odd ways) about NSFW content. In addition, even Barbie Girl has some amount of deniability as the lyrics aren't super ultra explicit so some people may miss the meaning there. But I have seen the opposite happen in some places. I once lived in a rather religious community and many of the older folk there warned us not to get rainbow flags or certain toys as they were (in their words) "the products of those Alphabet people". One kid I knew even got in trouble from their parents for supposedly sexual content in Sly 1 since Carmalita wasn't exactly dressed in business casual wear. Bringing this back to Overwatch, I imagine one worry Blizzard could have is that if their characters are overly sexualized by fans, that perception could trickle to other audiences. If the first exposure or thing a random parent knows about Overwatch is that it's an NSFW factory, they may be less willing to allow their kids to play the game. Given Overwatch is also trying to appeal to kids, that association with NSFW could hurt their market. A parent who knows nothing about Video Games but suspects Overwatch is making NSFW stuff isn't likely to go play the game to determine the exact specifics. With M rated stuff, at least there, the company isn't worried about other kid audiences. Like, if someone makes Witcher NSFW stuff, that isn't going to hurt CDPR since they were aiming for an adult audience anyways (if anything, it would be on brand on Witcher lol). A parent worried about sexual content wasn't going to buy their kid Witcher 3 anyway.

And to be perfectly honest, sometimes, very rarely, the horny aspect of a fandom produces better content than the sum of its reimplemented parts. My headcanon of [name withheld] from before the rerelease, where I genuinely wondered how she felt about sex (bi and demisexual), ended up making more sense than canon (“they were very good friends” type beat) or the common fanon (just bi, or earth-shatteringly straight and male-gazey because early 2000s internet). It even explains small plotholes that, in my opinion, go above and beyond the level of social awkwardness she displays. If you can get people to think of your character, even if it’s them getting eaten out, you’re still getting people to think about your work, and making people make art from there.

I’m the type who can appreciate fanservice when it’s by FANS, or when it’s like, a self-aware option (ex. Fanservicey alt costumes). When it’s the DEFAULT, especially when it pretends it’s not specifically aiming for fanservice when it obviously is, I get frustrated very quickly. Haven’t thought about it until now, but I’ve actually never had kinky/nsfw/fanservicey stuff impact my interpretation or views of a character in its source media, aside from when the “fanservice” is like…making a warrior character actually have visible MUSCLES (ex like literally anyone from Fire Emblem). Having said that, I do think it’d be better for Overwatch to at least keep dipping its toes in canon romance between characters, even if those romances don’t always work. For ex. I have a weird headcanon crackship that Sombra and Tracer are exes, and that’s related to why Sombra has the translocator. This idea popped into my head due to their in-game interactions. Doing things like that that establish connects between characters that are more messy and complicated than “grr you did a bad” could make them feel more human. Of course. Literally every match of Overwatch makes ZERO FUCKING SENSE in universe and all PvP gameplay is nonncanon so like. There’s much bigger issues to iron out if they wanna actually do something serious with the storytelling here lol
@TheViveros
@TheViveros Жыл бұрын
Honestly, I think a lot of stories get more interesting if you just throw in a couple “Oh, yeah, those two are exes and it’s MESSY” scenarios.

I really like your point that women can be competent and respectable while also being able to enjoy being sexual. Like thinking that a woman can't be both feels like internalized mysogny, since most pwople will feel fine with men being those 2 things but women immediately becomes disrespected and looked down upon when they like sex.

Bayonetta (At least 1 & 2) is the prime example of a woman being sexy and competent. Someone who knows their worth and will use her sexiness and femininity when it empowers her, but also someone who can and will kick ass when the world is falling apart. And I feel like that's why she's so popular amongst the LGBT community. Aside from her voguing and campy references, which are undoubtedly iconic, she doesn't have just one identity. She can do it all, be perceived as multiple figures, and they would all be accurate to some degree. You can view her as a fighter, a mother, a model, a designer, or a witch and they would all be correct. She's what Barbie wants to be if Barbie had the freedom to express that much.

I do feel like there is an understandable, if paradoxically unhelpful, tunnel vision pushback to the previously established status quo of sexualization and objectification. Hell, personally even now I find that somewhat difficult to navigate because these characters represent so many things to so many different people from so many different angles. They belong to the corporations who own their copyright, to the designers who sculpted them, to the animators who breathed life into them, to the voice actors who gave them a voice, the writers who moved them forward, the people who were simply physically attracted to them and only see them in that light, the people who never considered that interpretation and are deeply engaged with them on the level the "official side" wants them to be seen as, the people who combine both and may feel frustrated due to the antagonism to and from both, the people who watch from the sidelines and only react to the controversies, the people trying to more directly take control by using them in either fan works or as weapons for social commentary - there's just too many fingers in that pie, too many people who, to at least some extent, control what that character means through their personal engagement with them. It's impossible to play to the crowd so maybe the answer is to refuse doing so at all. I wouldn't know. I simply support what interpretations coincide with my view of what I believe the character is to me and should be.

I just love how you take a simple concept (R34 fan content) and extrapolate it into a much deeper conversation (how interpretations of media can be shaped by pop culture and that can potentially change the perception of a brand). I’ve been seeing this bleed into Valorant as well where fans kind of invent their own idea of the agents even though Riot makes it very clear what kind of person they actually are from the jump. Viper is a self isolating and cold blooded killer but people often draw/talk about her like she’s some seductive femme fatale murder mommy (similar to Widow), Sage is seen as a soft caring motherly type (similar to Mercy), but she’s actually a very skilled, strong and strategic soldier type with supportive capabilities as seen in their cinematics. etc etc It’s also very concerning when the companies that make those games try to lean into the fan narratives to offer fan service and show that they’re listening, because sometimes it’s at the cost of mischaracterizing their own heroes/agents

this video reminds me how in the video game "Baldur's Gate 3" they very much try to control and interact with the "sexual fan engagements" (and take in players&fans feedback overall) the fan community got about their characters and the game (they did an April's Fool skit about one character opening an Onlyfans, and for another character, there was sooo much unexeped thirst and ppl wanted to smash him that they eventually made him a romanceable character and a controllable companion for the game's full launch when before in the EA stage of the game I assumed to he was meant to be an NPC)

Barbie is able to redefine itself after this many years, yet I highly doubt OW trying to make a statement on any characters is going to go well, despite them having less years of people filling in their own narrative to work with. At least with Barbie, because she's so everything all at once, they set themselves up to use that IP in any direction they see fit, and were able to stick the landing. Blizz has not given enough for their characters to even feel like they fill -any-thing. One dimensional brush-stroke tropes don't work if they aren't super committed to the bit. Barbie is set up to be everything, and OW characters are set up for nothing. And the community has wasted no time filling in those blanks for themselves; which is gonna create a pretty bad crash when the story side of OW2 starts getting unveiled. tl;dr: Even with the song kind of putting Mattel in a difficult position, they navigated it well enough to set themselves up to kinda take Barbie any direction they want; while OW has been so apprehensive about taking stances on anything, and would rather sit out at sea, that any attempt to take a direction is only gonna hurt more than help.

Also I would love to see a Cyberpunk video because as much as I love that game, it irks me that a supposedly "cyberpunk" game is so firmly about helping law/badges, submitting to big corpa, helping politicians, and pretty much everything that is not only anathema to cyberpunk, but to punk itself
@TheViveros
@TheViveros Жыл бұрын
Part of why it works for Mattel is that they can have their “This Barbie is a doctor” and “This Barbie is a President” thing while *also* separately having Stereotypical Barbie who doesn’t have to be those things. If you tried to do it with Overwatch you could do a “This hero’s a cowboy” and “This hero’s a gorilla/scientist” but you don’t have your Stereotypical Hero that can pull them all together. Also yeah the cyberpunk topic would be a fun one, I’ll be curious to see how people vote for sure.

I absolutely loved how they showed barbie and ken's different reactions to the real world. Honestly as a trans man, I connected with ken when he said "you respect me?". Like passing consistently is very nice, but I also get to see how differently I'm treated now. People don't talk down to me when I'm learning something. Barbie movie shows how poorly women are treated so well! To add to your point about people perceiving barbie as unintelligent or shallow, I was talking about enjoying the movie and my boss said like "if it's just pink and frilly, I don't want to see it" and I was able to talk about how it actually does a good job presenting feminist ideas!

Fortnite almost has a similar problem. Fortnite has had many intriguing story threads with high potential, but then doing NOTHING with them. Sometimes even during the season that story thread takes place in! I've made a story in my own head for the past 6 years this game has been out, and I do find myself irritated at the "official" crossover comics that came out. I wish more companies would do more with their characters and stories, rather than letting them all just stagnate.

Wait what? I heard D.va was aged up from 16 to 18/19 because the game could have gotten an increased age rating from having a kid be able to be killed, not due to D.va being sexualized in game. Interesting to hear this though. Seems it's all just a rumor since no one can give a definite source but still interests me regardless, especially the way you framed it here. I mean even with the interpretation it *was* due to being able to kill the baby d.va., a lot of people noted how grimsly dark it was for D.va to be able to scream "I'm too young to die" which just further backs up the idea in my head. Honestly I think that's the same reason we'll never get a kid character in the game like Efi, or why Kiriko acts and is treated to also be somewhere around 16 yet appears to be considered like 23 or something.
@leyagame583
@leyagame583 Жыл бұрын
Pretty sure Kiriko is meant to be in her thirties. Or closer to thirty, at least. Because Hanzo is at least 37, Genji is at least 35 and Kiriko was training with them and is at most like 8 years younger than Genji. Overwatch's relationship with its timeline and characters ages is weird in general. Mercy is probably too young to be a genius doctor when she joined Overwatch, etc. Edit: Overwatch Wiki says Kiriko is in her early 20's, but like... Idk? Feels like she should be older.
@sapphicseas0451
@sapphicseas0451 Жыл бұрын

@rexspecificallyredrex64rem73
@rexspecificallyredrex64rem73 Жыл бұрын
@@leyagame583 it seems to heavily imply Mercy joined overwatch at 16 or so, which cannot be the case because she'd be almost double Pharah's age. They also said the Valkyrie suit slowed down the aging process but they retconned that. So Mercy basically just gets a sudden age gap upon meeting torbjorn, where Mercy was a close friends of the Lindholm family while simultaneously not being that much older than Brig who is around her late 20s to early 30s. Lucio also used to be regarded as a child in the same camp as D.va and Tracer, especially the former by characters like Ana or Ashe, despite Lucio being in his 30s around Genji's age So yeah the age is fucked up in general.

I believe you failed to mention the cosplayers. It is not only animators that produce "content" there are also cosplayers who promote nsfw stuff. Not all of them fully dress up for their characters, or they do but hide the spicy stuff behind a paywall. Also, a wierder point maybe. I've learned more about Overwatch lore in your part 2 then from the game itself. If Blizzard really wanted to even TRY to mitigate these perceptions of their character, they would've put them in real contexts. Why isn't all that lore stuff in the game and pushed foward ? Because it doesn't bring Blizzard money and that's why they botched PvE. I'm sure people would love to see these characters as something more but when playing the game, all you get is their voice lines. They don't actually show them being the heroes they want us to believe they are. Result is people try to fill these shells of characters with their fantasies. I think its similar to p-stars. Nobody know what they do irl, their playing up this bimbo performance because that's the context they're in and at the moment, that's what you wanna believe. I think you bring up my point shortly at 22:15 and in part 4. They really should develop the character to character relationships IN-GAME and really take control of the narative. Overall, I enjoyed most of the Barbie movie and I like your analysis. I don't agree with modern feminism because I feel it strayed away from the equality objective. I just wished it ended less one sided. Greta had a real opportunity to show how men and women can work together through their differences but didn't...

Like of course majority of these things are created for and by the straight males and so they have similar themes and scenarios. But then you have characters like Senshi, who gets plenty of official fan service in their own media, and they're not the stereotypically attractive male. This is a really funny question, but not in general? I’ll write it off if it’s an expense exclusively related to making content (i.e., if I buy a game that I exclusively play on stream) but I don’t think the BP falls under that because it’s usually not what I’m making content about, and even if I was, it’s possible to do that without paying for it. However, I’ve never played a Zero Escape game if it wasn’t on stream or for a video, and I bought those games with the sole intention of using them for content, so I *think* those count.

I thought the movie was really good tbh, and the comedy of it actually really worked for me. I think the feminism of the movie does definitely hit as a bit of a 101 intro course, but imo a lot of people are still definitely in need of that intro. Also trust me I was appropriately ashamed of that Mercy gameplay, never again

I don't think the whole "r34 devalues the characters" is a serious issue. in my opinion, it comes down to the maturity of the player. I'm guilty of trips to the incognito tab, but i'm also enough of an adult to separate the concept of "this is what i watch when i'm alone in my room" and "this is what I play with my friends." I can find the overwatch characters attractive in their own right, satisfy my own more base desires, and find the characters interesting without mixing all those ideas together. I'm literate enough in the media I consume that i can distinguish between two creators of work using the same characters to different ends. Seeing mercy getting plowed harder than a farmer's land after the frost has melted doesn't change her character inside the game in my eyes.

just saying, if they made their characters more romantically involved, it would redirect that horniness into something less poisonous. Reinhardt is fine as hell, but how gentle he is with Ana is just too endearing. a cutscene of them slowdancing would be the nail in the coffin for the rein-fuckers. its not happening though, they butchered the real OW2 and any chances of expanding the story

I do not blame Blizzard for avoiding to address Overwatch ships and obviously porn. One is a given of course, Overwatch is a game form all audiences and addressing sex in it is downright criminal. But also the ships in overwatch are simply nonsensical, with Tracer and Widow being shipped because they are hot, Pharah and Mercy because they are hot, Soldier and Reaper being shipped because they are hot, Hanzo and Cassidy being shipped because they are hot, in this last one they didn't even bother to pick two people that might know eachother canonically even. Just extremely superficial ships with no real interest on their actual relationship as characters and instead only using them like blank meat to wrestle naked in bed together. Roadhog/Junkrat and Ana/Reinhardt often feels like the only ships were people actually care about the characters involved and the way they interact
