I finished barbie. And.. well one might think that after the back and forth between male and female domination, that maybe some common ground could be found and men and woman could work together both sides given power and respect. In the process perhaps teaching the audience that for all our differences men & women are both pretty awesome. But, nope.. the Ken's slide back into a depressing existence of being irrelevant second class citizens. And that I think is supposed to be what? A happy ending? It's superficial in the way it's portrayed as bright and colorful. However there's something seriously dark going on under the curtain. This is a movie made by people who utterly despise men and masculinity, or any sort of traditional gender roles in general. The nail in the coffin though is how well the marketing team kept the fact that this is a Wolf in sheep's clothing under wraps. At least She-hulk wore her feminist labels like a badge of honor same as the female oceans movie and Ghostbusters Melissa McCarthy. Thisis some spiteful, mean-spirited, dog shit? It's so f***ing devisive and unnecessary. They had a perfect opportunity to unify audiences & wrap this up with reconciliation & equality but, they just couldn't help themsevles.. they were so filled with rage and hatred and bitterness that it just had to come spewing out on the screen. The message I get is that men and everything they do is utter shit. They cant be trusted with any sort of power or responsibility. That the only way to have a peaceful harmonious society is to let the women run everything and have men be docile powerless servants who exist only to please them. Wow, what an inspiring message for young impressionable girls. And like I said before none of this would be nearly as insidious if the marketing department hadn't done everything in its power to keep it a secret. I knew what I was getting into with She-hulk atleast. But barbie really is a Wolf in sheep's clothing promising one thing and delivering something completely different. How many parents are going to take there kids to see this thinking it's a happy go lucky barbie flick with no political stance? I'm still waiting for an intelligent take on why this movie isn't dog shit, just like your taste in movies.
@Spicie95 Жыл бұрын
@@exitmygamekid3007 Here's the thing, I can write the truth at you about why this movie works in such a monosyllabic way that anyone can understand it, but you will still refuse to understand, because you have decided you don't want to understand or attempt to compromise your hatred against a movie, you choose to seek out to hate upon. A movie. Seriously. Anyway, here goes: If the movie ends on the note that Barbieland becomes an equality utopia, it would not be reflective on what the real world looks like under patriarchy. The Kens ask for a seat on the supreme court, but instead get a lower cabinet, and according to the narrator, eventually the same level of power as women have in the real world. That is what we call satire, because it reflects a world opposite to ours wherein men and women have their roles reversed and we can laugh at how absurd everything works in their world, and therefore how absurd that same structure is in ours. And you are right. The ending is superficial and pretends to be happy, because it is, once again, a reflection on the world we live in, and because Barbie, Ken, Midge, and Allan are dolls who live in a fantastic plastic world. "I'm Just Ken" is a song about the Kens attempting to claim their own sense of identity in a world where they don't have a purpose other than "beach" and being Barbie's boyfriend or guy friend. Main Ken clings onto Barbie, but she can't be his crutch or purpose in the world, and throughout the movie, it is obvious that their relationship is drain on both of them, because they are only together out of design and expectation. It has nothing to do with hating men, rather making the point that the Kens are "enough and great at doing stuff". They can be anything they want to be, if they just find out what that is. And as we see with the Kendom, if the Kens work together, they can accomplish something quite impressive, but as soon as they begin fighting, it all falls apart. The Kens become undone by mansplaining and jealousy, in a comical and over the top manner, one can't help but laugh at. Another example of satire, when all the Kens flash on screen saying "here, let us show you". Most women in the audience relate so well to that scene, and you can clearly see the actors having so much fun making it. The marketing tag line is literally "She's everything, he's just Ken". If you didn't see the obvious feminist implications of that phrase, that is on you. Furthermore, if you don't understand why that is perfectly related to the Barbie brand, you clearly don't care enough about Barbie (or Ken) to bother with this movie. And I have no idea where you are coming from with the idea of the marketing hiding the feminist themes. A movie directed by acclaimed feminist director Greta Gerwig, staring a cast of primarily women, in a movie based on Barbie, who has literally held every possible career in her 64 years of existing. Again, if you didn't care about the dolls, it is on you for watching the movie. Anti-feminists have been complaining about everything with a feminist angle from the last 10 years, as being anti-men, for not catering to men specifically. Anything with a woman in the lead role, gets flag, like when the reactions to the trailer for Ghostbusters (2016) contributed to KZbin removing dislike numbers from videos, reactions to Captain Marvel forced Rotten Tomatoes to change user reviews, and just this year reactions to The Little Mermaid (2023) did the same for IMDb. At some point, you just have to know when not to seek out and hate on media you don't enjoy just because you don't enjoy it. This hate-train is ruining actual attempts at criticism, because people want to be angry, instead of indifferent. Barbie has a rating of PG-13 (according to the US scale, adjust for differences in other countries). If anyone brings a kid to watch it, it is entirely on the parenting, not the movie. That is like when people actually complained the movie Sausage Party wasn't a kid-friendly movie, despite being animated, and I predict at least one case of horrified parent somewhere bringing their kid to the upcoming Doggy Style, which has talking dogs. Kids don't run the world, nor should they. In any case, Barbie is a pretty harmless movie on that front, considering kids are used to watching movies with dirty jokes that fly over their heads. Feminism isn't a political stance. It's a wish for societal equality between the sexes, as well as a break down of oppressive structures and cultural expectations that people don't thrive under. Anyway, as I stated earlier: if you don't like something, don't seek it out. Maybe you watched Barbie in good faith and was disappointed - totally fair - but why on Earth would you waste your time complaining about to someone you don't know who did like the movie?? Your comment does nothing to change my opinion on it, aside from maybe liking it a bit more after analysing it in my head for this comment. Go watch something you love and have fun with it. Talk/chat about it with others who like it too. That's a thousand times more enjoyable and a better use of your life.

One of my favorite details is the fact that Barbie doesn’t have a mirror in her vanity. There aren’t actually any mirrors or mirror finishes and Barbie land, so that means that none of the Barbies actually know what they look like. To me, that’s interesting commentary on the fact that Barbie has transformed from just a toy for girls to play with to the epitome of patriarchal beauty. It’s a reflection of the fact that the societal standards for women (being the perfect spouse, mom, employee, and looking beautiful while doing it), are things being placed on women (and Barbie), and don’t necessarily come from us. The Barbies don’t care that they’re beautiful, they just want to have a good day every day, it’s the people in the real world so focused on their looks.
