My mom heard this song when she was dying from cancer and it must of hit a nerve because for the first time ever a tear started to roll down her eye when she thought I wasn't looking. My mom passed away in 2021 and since then life hasn't been the same without her. If she only knew what a big hole she left in my heart and how much I missed her and how this song and that tear has become a reflection of the way things were.

Do not worry.... your mother is just fine where she is.... you may be unaware of her but she's very much alive.... the emotions you feel are all part of being human, loss is part of living. Smile, and remember because she was here.....

My mother died of breast cancer in 1971. The years roll by but there's never a day I don't think of her. She was an amazing woman and I have always hoped to be half as wonderful as she. I was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2019 - two months after my husband died. Thankfully we caught it early. So far so good. Thank God for the wonders of modern medicine. This song means so much to me as well. Thank you Barbra .. you are incredible!!!

Written during the 70s, when songwriters were not afraid to "go deep" and left us a legacy of the most powerful music ever written. Barbra Streisand's irreplaceable voice sends it into the stratosphere. There is no voice like hers! Only she could have imbued this beautiful song with such melancholy and depth.

I feel the same way Ardi 1968! the 70's were magical. Evenings at home with whole family, especially the colder months, playing games, card games, making popcorn. My parents have long passed away, my four older siblings each live in a different state, each with grandkids now. We're lucky if we see each other once a year. Be nice to turn back time, at least for a little while, I adored my parents.

Memories Light the corners of my mind Misty watercolor memories Of the way we were Scattered pictures Of the smiles we left behind Smiles we gave to one another For the way we were Can it be that it was all so simple then? Or has time re-written every line? If we had the chance to do it all again Tell me, would we? Could we? Memories May be beautiful and yet What's too painful to remember We simply to choose to forget So it's the laughter We will remember Whenever we remember The way we were The way we were

When I was young, it was just a pretty song to me. Now when I hear this song, it's not just a pretty song, but a song that has so much depth and feeling. Some of the sweetest memories can be the ones that are the most painful to remember. As we lose loved ones as we grow older, how we wish we could go back in time. Sometimes tears are like prayers when it's hard to speak. Tears are like showers for the soul. Those are the most genuine prayers of all. But the greater the pain, the greater was the love we felt for them. A heart that loves deeply is a heart that loves completely. Never take any loved ones for granted. This song could not be more perfect and comforting.

I hear you there, this past year I lost a friend whom I was so emotionally close to, whom I regarded as a mentor and even an adoptive uncle. I took his passing very hard; it’s been eight months now since he went home to be with the Lord. RIP, Mike, I love and miss you.

I miss my Ma so much. God called her home on 20 May 2024. She sacrificed so much for us, for our family. She left us with so many memories, always there whenever we needed her. Now, there is a big empty hole in my heart.

So sorry for your loss. I lost both parents my beloved sister and brother. I still miss them in my life after 40 yrs. I cry whenever I think of them. So my sister my advice is when you remember them and you feel like crying cry cos you are never going to wash their memories away. It will always be there.

My mother’s favorite artist , she was only 53 , 1989 I was 19 . She’s been gone longer than I had her in my life, but those 19 years were a lifetime 💜 I love you mom ❤

I'm sorry you lost your mother when you--and she--were so young. I was lucky... I didn't lose my mother until I was 53. But no matter how old you are, I guess you're never ready. It'll be ten years this April, and I still miss her, and love her, every minute of every day. I actually saw "The Way We Were" for the first time with her.

I found this tune because a music box I bought from a thrift shop played it. Luckily the name of the tune was printed on the bottom and I was able to look it up. Just from the music box melody I could tell this song would hit hard.

Barbra is my idol. This song reminds me of my first love. The first boy I’ve ever had intense romantic feelings for and the first boy to break my heart. We used to be friends. He used to smile at me in the school hallways whenever he saw me. We laughed at each other’s jokes and supported one another. Even though we don’t talk anymore, I still remember those memories of the way we were 💕
