The airport is located about ten kilometers southwest of the center of Barcelona in the municipality of El Prat de Llobregat. In 2012, 35,131,771 passengers used the airport's services.
The route to Madrid-Barajas Airport is the largest in the world in terms of passenger numbers. However, since February 2008, a high-speed rail line between cities was introduced, and the number of aircraft flights began to decrease.
On June 16, 2009, a new airport terminal with an area of 545,000 m² (ranks 22nd in the list of the largest buildings and structures in the world (by floor area)) was opened, called T1 and designed by architect Ricardo Beaufil. Today, Barcelona International Airport has three runways from 2540 meters to 3352 meters long, two asphalt and one concrete.
At the moment, the airport has two terminals T1 and T2, the latter was built much earlier and includes three sectors A, B and C. A free shuttle bus runs between the terminals, and a shuttle is organized from the railway station near the T2 terminal to the new T1 terminal .
