M R James father of the modern ghost story. He left behind Gothic tropes. James authored studies of Ancient Christian art for his day job. His Antiquarian studies are still used today as he based his research on art as well as text and so opened up the subject like no one before. James was from a strong Anglican upbringing which left him less prepared to tackle discoveries of demons than perhaps a Catholic upbringing may have. It has been pointed out that James was very conflicted by what he astutely uncovered in the medieval art. Depiction of evil was fully exposed and he may have dealt with what he astutely uncovered through these unprecedented stories.

I am glad you enjoyed The Mezzotint because of all M R James it's my fav! He was so modern considering he was writing before WW2. The understated tone is what sets it up so well. I have seen the same concept used only once in a film vignette about a guy who knows this big black hound is gonna eat him because he sees it coming closer in a painting.

I love them, written in such precious, sophisticated, elaborate English to enjoy for us all. And yes, I really have that old cottage with a chimney here in the centre of France, an old well to tell forgotten stories of rain, water, and the hard labour to fetch it 25 meters deep. And I have some old cristal glasses for the port, crisis survivors, cherished. And a bit of firewood, rationed, for the dark winter they prepare for us all. These stories, chosen with care and taste, help to evade after hard days of work and preparing, the drop of port in an old glass and your peaceful voice truly make a perfect match to relax and forget the worries for à little while this Christmas time...

I've seemed to be losing track of days since my admission and discharge, but I still seem to have very little memory of the past few weeks. This is a perfectly brilliant combination: Tony Walker and M.R. James! An early Christmas present for me. I have my evening planned now; my meds, electric blanket and some hot soup or something; and then hopefully be able to doze and get some sleep!!! Thank you Tony for all of your hard work in brushing off these old classics, and introducing to new generations of people. And I'm sure we are all feeding the same trolls. All we can do for them is to let them disrupt the community, and forcefeed them like veal ( whether it be their gender, politics, fat being beautiful or anything else) so their pacified; then all of our free time can be devoted to listening!

I live in an area where we don't get too much fog, but I have always been enthralled by it for some reason, and I love the foghorn sound myself; it's unfortunate sometimes that an artist must please his audience ( patrons, customer base, etc), and sacrifice artistic integrity. A fog horn is a small thing to be sure, but it's very strange to me the little things people put real drama into.! I remember reading a story as a young girl, called Fog Magic. It was listed as a young adult book, but frankly I think it would be enjoyable for adults as well. In essence, guess it is a ghost story; because when the young girl, Greta ( the protagonist) sees the fog start rolling in, Tolliver ( the fog horn blows) and when she walks down the lane in through the fog, she enters a time slip. Every burned out house and ruined foundation of the old town is still there! Peopled, and they continue to live there year-round. Unfortunately, the only time Greta can see them and interact with them is during the fog. Once the fog starts dissipating, she needs to rush back through or risk getting stuck there. It was this story that fostered my interest in fog, quantum physics, and the supernatural.

- The Victorian authors wrote in the most roundabout bull$hi1 manner. - Ah, indeed, one must marvel at the Victorian authors’ unparalleled talent for weaving an exquisite tapestry of circumlocution and verbosity, rendering the simplest of notions into labyrinthine, unfathomable prose! What a rare gift it is, to transform the direct and comprehensible into a veritable odyssey of redundant drivel, leaving the reader entangled in a web of pompous trivialities.

I dont find the sound of rain relaxing. It is cold and wet. It sosks your shoes and makes you miserable. It can cause hypothermia. So I looked the idea up. The piece of research that produced this idea was misread by someone. The sound of rain is not universally found to be relaxing. The idea that it is is related to white noise has led to this ruining of a good story by backing it with the sound of rain. Why white noise is supposed to be relaxing I dont know because reading long and detailed research reports certainly is sleep indu.........
