Hi Tony. I appreciate your commentary about the societal problems that we've always had and how we view people. I worked as a social worker for many years in social services, community health, medical, and psychiatric units in prison. You described the fascinating tightrope walk we must do to remain compassionate and savvy at the same time. I think that those of us in this field are always facing the fact that people are complex with potential for such good AND evil. That's why I love these ghost stories.

I've flicked through all of the comments which have preceded mine on this story and there is NOT ONE criticism, which is very very rare. You should be proud of yourself for providing entertainment and maintaining high standards.

I found this tale terrifying- the detailed description builds up the psychological terror so well. Some of it is unbelievable, of course, but the primary part of the story and its build up is so well done. Of course, much of the credit belongs to Tony and his fantastic storytelling skills.

Just lost my beautiful mother a few days ago, and my life seems over as well. I can't even let myself think......All I know for certain is that I'll be completely alone at Christmas, just me and my pups. Dave has his mom, 3 children and 2 new grandkids. And they celebrate without me. Being the only girl, and oldest child in my family I have the most and strongest memories. This is not a good time of year, nor will it ever be again 😢

I am so sorry to hear that. No one knows until they know what it's like. You have my thoughts. I hope you can be comforted by the thought that you will meet again. I am no materialist. In my heart I know it's true. Google Kurt Godel the famous mathematician and how he wrote about his mother over the last days and told her that this was not the end. I found it a great comfort.

Tony, in the commentary you suggested that you made Lady Spelhurst (?) more evil than she was. I think she was an intentional misdirect as the godmother who was slighted at the presentation of the baby. This mirrors some old folk/fairy tales (such as sleeping beauty where the godmother who was insulted at an earlier date cursed or made the adult child suffer. We were supposed to hold her in suspicion. The narrator even uses the word "sacrifice" when saying had she not given up her room, then one of her sisters would have been sacrificed. Sorry for any typos, can't find my readers. .

I really liked this story. I have a bit of a different idea for the analysis, though. I don’t think the protagonist sinned at all. I think the sin was her mother’s-she somehow slighted Lady Spelthurst (sp?) at her communion, so this spiteful old woman wanted to ruin her life. And I think Lady Spelthurst had something to do with this creature that attacked her, that it was some sort of supernatural creature that cannot be killed by whips/chains/starvation/scalding, and she unleashed this creature upon the young girl for vengeance. This Lady might have had something to do with the demise of her mother as well. My uncle is paranoid schizophrenic and very dangerous; he attacks people even in the asylum under medication. I have a hard time feeling sorry for him after 40 years of him terrorizing the family.

I think the point should be made that the escaped lunatic didn’t overtly cause the woman's condition. All he did was find a warm place to sleep. She got away before he could hurt her. Her subsequent condition is all on her, and perhaps the Victorian culture that made her feeble. Also, I feel like the mastiff in the courtyard could have made a better showing.

Was thinking of Nosferatu throughout this story! There were undeniable similarities. Your full Gothic was so much fun and your colleague must have been drunk. to give such bad advice. I was impressed that the monster turned out to be just an ordinary man. For awhile there I forgot I was listening to a modern man and not a Victorian heiress. You'll always be my favorite girl boss.

I went to the comments halfway through the story (never a smart move) to see if anyone else was also bothered by the constant "my life was ruined and I will never be the same" remarks by the protagonist. There is foreshadowing, and then there is completely overdoing it. By the time she went to her garret, I was ready to push her down the stairs myself. PS: If Reginald didn't stick by you, afterwards, it wasn't really love on his part. Good ridance, Reginald.

I make a note of interest without seeing any significance to what I point out: in this story with the interesting addition addition of an introduction by the narrator, a format addition what you have picking up only recently, you delete the trademark identification the podcast brand in which a voice speaks of looking in a forbidden drawer.

I find myself surprised to see a difference in our perceptions. You refer to the old Hammer films as having a wonderful camp quality in the gothicness. Perhaps because I was a young teenager when I encountered them when they were first released (the early and best Hammer horror films I speak of) I saw them as an elegant perfection, ideal and artistic rendering the highest tradition of storytelling. No 5:26 films ever utilize perfect art decoration and set the decoration more effectively than these Hammer films (what is a side light of great interest but no effect on the quality of the film that these visuals and sets were achieved in a miraculous level of economy). I suspect that none would dispute the quality of Peter Cushing's performance of call at camp. The other actors were generally excellent

I haven’t listened to this story yet but I’m just throwing out one listeners opinion. I really really really dislike the preambles. 1) I don’t want to know what the story is about in advance, and 2) the teasers make the stories sound really tedious and make me less likely to listen. That’s just my opinion. I also feel like it’s a lot of AI patter. I wonder how others feel?
