Reminds me a bit of dangerfield with the handles, however they do look beautiful.

It's functionally identical to the Dangerfield Praxis set. It has each profile in two thicknesses (0.023''/0.6mm, and 0.015''/0.4mm), it has the same eight profiles (short hook, gem hook, half-diamond, deforest diamond, bogota, city rake, snake rake, and batarang), and the handles are the same shape.

I have a lot of Bones stuff, and I love it all. This might be an older set too, as the latest runs have done more to address the need for sand paper and feel a lot smoother. And for people that don't like the handle, he's got a bunch of affordable handle styles on the website (some you can buy attached already) with a few more on the way I believe. Plus, he's just the coolest guy, if you haven't gotten a chance to chat with him you're missing out. A rare *gem* in the pick manufacturing community.

Tbh, that music wire turning tool has always been my personal favourite. They usually only turn up in el-cheapo kits with picks apparently made of damp cardboard, but that turner is the only good thing about them.

Interesting to see this review from you! A bit of context on them. They're made of 301 High Yield stainless as you speculated. Profiles are, as others have noted, similar to Mad Bob and Dangerfield due to the profiles being open source and well known. They're also excellent profiles in my opinion. Yes this kit is aimed to be budget but it has high quality tools inside. Bare Bones is essentially the only pick company based in Australia down here that isn't a reseller like Pickpals. It's worth noting that hitting the picks with sandpaper is worth the time, but I actually did not find them bad to use without it in higher security locks. I do like their Gem style medium hook even without. Regarding bottom of the keyway tools, there are other styles like wiper blade turners available on the website. I do agree that the set could use some wiper style tensioners. There are also many other pick styles sold such as the deeper hooks that you mentioned wanting. As for handles and such, there are plenty of options on the website. You didnt mention it in the review, but I know that handles are a big point of contention. It's interesting that you note the stickers, because Bare Bones does ship these out with plenty of stickers as well.

I was nearly ready to put my order in for the Dangerfield Praxis Lock Pick Set (I'm still debating whether I should get the Ionic version, it looks really nice) and watching this Lock Noob review of the Bare Bones Dual-gauge set just made things even more complicated

Bare Bones are extremely popular here in Australia. They are as strong as picks get, and at the cheaper end of the market. It’s a shame you didn’t get any handles to try out as well as some of the more useful pick profiles.

It's my understanding that the name "Bare Bones" refers to the fact these Picks aren't fully finished/tumbled . The idea was the purchaser would give them a quick sand if they felt they needed them (this was done to keep the cost to the consumer down). Having said that, I've seen much worse finishes on some premium priced Picks.

The picks are cut from 301 High Yield Stainless. For those interested, Barebones have a wide variety of Picks (including BB Dimples), Pick handle, Tensioner and assorted tool options available on their website..

I've been using barebones picks for over 2 years now I've got the .20 mm 4 pick set which has the small hook, medium hook, the deforest diamond and the small diamond, they have been wonderful, no bending or breaking so far, (I'd pick 5 to 6 locks almost every night, I've got a box of about 30 different locks I practice with) I've also got the butchers block set which are .23 they are just as good as the other set,however I don't need to use them as often. IMHO. BAREBONES picks are great value for money and very robust. Previously I was using the set of sparrows hookers set which I ended up breaking most of them. I thought I wouldn't like the bare handle on the BB given that the sparrows set had covers on them. But I really love the BB picks!

Great review! I have some of the picks that make up that set and minus the case. I like the pick profiles but for me the bare handles don't work for me. One of these days I will make some handles for them in the shop.

I put marine-grade shrink wrap on my Praxis set, it really makes them a lot more comfortable. I wish I could make nice custom scales, the skills aren't there yet.

@Madlintelf yes, I have tried using shrink wrap before, unfortunately with having some neuropathy in my hands it dampens feedback for me more than I would like.

@@TheLockPicker1969 Well hello fellow person with neuropathy, I hate it and completely understand. You can try regular shrink wrap, but thin down the edges of pop sickle sticks, and put them in before heating. That has helped me a lot, I love sparrows with the rubber grip as well, bare picks don't do it for me unless it's an easy lock.

@@William_Borgeson I make lock picks and the handles for them. I do woodworking and carpentry as another of my interests so making picks and handles for them was a natural progression to go to. I do appreciate the advice though and will check that out as well.

Looks pretty much the same as the Praxis by Dangerfield. I have always wanted to get that- as it's in 2 different sizes but I already have 4 different sizes from Sparrow's stuff. BUT= Dangerfield's rake set is the best. It's so good= I don't buy anything from Sparrows other than Hooks or something in a width that isn't .025. Cool vid though, the case looks great. For all of the companies that make picks= it's crazy how many have lame cases. Dangerfield also used to make a pick case that was just a flat piece of cloth that you rolled up with a bunch of different slot pockets on it. Also, the best case I ever bought though it's been discontinued. I used to carry my whole set (though it wasn't huge at the time) and could still fit it in my front pocket nicely w/ no bulge.

My complaint with the Peterson tools is that there were several large birrs and burnout marks from the laser on the tools that made them almost unusable. with thickness of the meta already thin,l trying to grind them down and reprofile them destroys the tool

I really like the set, the case at least for me is meh and that doesn't bother me because I make my own sets. This one is just like the Dangerfield Praxis set, but they really added a lot more turning tools, and Z turners as well. The praxis set had a few BOK turners, but you can never have enough. The cost of this set with shipping to the US is 80 USD, and praxis is 69 USD. They should have tumbled them, but most of us would just take some 5k grit sandpaper, and a few minutes later no problems. Thanks for the review, I would put this in the beginner/advanced category personally.

I'm currently learning lockpicking with a fairly cheap lockpick set and i dont know if picks normally "bend" backwards when you apply pressure with the wrench. i dont know if my picks are weak or if i just dont know how to apply pressure to binding pins because they dont move and i might have to press them in but my picks jsut dont allow me to any ideas on wether i should invest in new picks or if this is a problem with serrated pins? i only picked regular pins yet
@OzTortoise
@OzTortoise Жыл бұрын
What colour is the metal part of your lockpicks, brass? Cheap lockpicks made of brass may bend permanently easily and then you will need to unbend it. If these are what you are using, you had better buy better ones made of 301 high yield stainless steel.

ive got a set, good but they break over time, the tips are really weak, when the picks are in the case, they can fall out the case from the zipper, i contacted the seller about this but was told i could buy a different case instead. i guess ill never buy one again, and yes mine did come with stickers too.
