I would love to see some testing and comparison between ABB full metal backup and HyperBackup full metal backup. Comparison of backup and restore times, backup size, ease of use, and why one might use one vs another (what are the use cases of each).

I went back to using a "normal" HyperBackup myself. The sticking point was Time Machine shared folers. These do create quite a bit of data churn and not being able to exclude shared folders, and having limited storage capacity at the Vault end, didn't fill me with joy given HyperBackup backups for us goes over the internet. All Synology needed to do was to allow shared folder exclusions (with "this isn't a validated Synology HDD" type warning in red if they wanted) and it would have been fab! I probably should send them a feature request via a support ticket.

Hey Will! Great video! Have you tried or just know if it's possible to restore a bare metal backup to a different model; just newer one? i.e. take a bare metal backup from a DS220+ and restore it to a DS224+

It only allows Synology to Synology full system backup, not to other NAS-es. Would love to set this up between my Synology and my QNAP

I recently upgraded my Synology drives (just have 2x in RAID0) and used Hyper Backup for the import. I was a bit surprised as you mentioned it didn’t import all application and system settings. I probably spent an hour or two manually re-configuring everything. Glad that bare metal backups are now supported. EDIT: Ahhhh damn it, of course my Synology model (DS218) is not supported. 😢

Did my first Entire Backup, but it didn't backup the encrypted shared folder!!!!! In Hyper Backup Vault, when I scroll thru my folders, every encrypted folders are EMPTY. :( I think I broke it too ;)

Will our existing hyper backup settings convert to bare metal after the update or do we need to create new hyperbackups (I know the old backups won't be bare metal but what about the new backups run from the old settings?)?

I assume using Hyperbackup to USB is preferable to using the USB Copy application at this point?

Backing up a bare metal image to an external drive is not possible currently. I wonder if it's possible to copy over the backup manually to an USB drive after backup and in case of emergency restore from the USB drive? I mean having an offline backup is the securest backup you can have so maybe worth a try?

I'm right now doing a full baremetal restore from an off-site Synology server to my server. The backup is stored on an external drive connected to the off-site Synology server. Although both NASes are connected to 600 mbit connections, the transfer speed between the two while doing the restoration is 15mbytes/s; ridiculously slow. And I know that the USB drive is not the problem. I did some transfer tests between the off-site NAS and the USB drive and you can copy data between the two at over 100 MBytes/s. I have a few questions: 1. What happens if the process is interrupted? (eg: Remote Synology NAS disconnects, power cuts off, etc). Do I have to start from zero? Or does it resume? 2. How can I manually abort the process if I had to? 3. Could I stop the restoration and restart the whole process from the local USB backup? 4. Can the speed be improved somehow? 5. The restoration process completed 14% during the first 24 hours, which is weird considering that the backup file is 4.33 TB (not compressed) and the transfer rate is 14 mbytes/s. Does the first 50% of the process download the whole thing and the other 50% is setting it up? If anyone could answer these questions, it would help tremendously. My lack of experience with the restoration process is stressing me a lot 😅

Does hyperbackup compress files for its backup. If so approximately how much i.e. what ratio?

30 Tb primary nas being backed up, and its done its 30tb/30tb, and hyper backup says 45% (with no network activity). Anyone else have something like this?

Great video as always! Im trying to restore my entire system from Hyper Backup Vault in DSM 7.2.1. At the end of the Back up wizard; when I click restore and verify that the local nas will be erased it asks me for a file path the latest DSM software. After the 'Creating volumes for the restoration' is complete I get a new window saying welcome back and give me the option to 'Re-Install' the DSM. It then asks for the file path to the latest DSM software and brings me back to the Welcome to DSM 7.2 page and gives me another opportunity to 'Restore your device'. Which leads me back to the Hyper Backup wizard and then I'm stuck in Groundhog day. Any idea how to break out of this loop and restore my NAS?

Exactly the same problem here. Also DSM7.2.1, did you overcome this later?

Not entirely. I worked with Synology Help for about 3months. They never came to a root cause or solution. Eventually we came up with a work around that had me run the Restore Wizard and instead of trying to restore full, I would just have to pick a folder to manually restore. I’m still leery of using the Synology backup tool.

@@mali0049 ok, I solved it. After I tried replugging all the drives and turn off and on the power button dozen times, it finally worked. I must’ve reinstalled DSM eight times. Someone on the synology forum said you also had to not connect to internet, but I didn’t do that.

I have a pair of DS1621+ Boxes. The primary unit hosts my Plex Server which contains 10's of Terabytes of ripped Movies plus my photos and music. The secondary unit, I currently use for TestLabs and similar. The secondary unit also has less storage than the primary. I would like to backup the Primary to the Secondary, but exclude the movie rips. In a recovery scenario, I am prepared to invest the time to re-rip my Blu-ray\DVD collection in exchange for the (much) smaller backup footprint. Ideally I would like to be in a position where following a failure of the Primary I could restore from backup to a replacement unit, with the Plex Server either empty or having a few placeholder rips, but everything else (especially the Photos) would be identical to immediately prior to the failure. Is Hyperbackup a solution for this approach, or should I be looking at something else?

Hyperbackup will be able to do the photos and the folders, but not the Plex configs if you want to do bare metal backup, but bare metal would require to backup everything

Is it possible to migrate from NAS with 1 HDD volume to new NAS with 2 volumes, where some packages/data (applications) to migrate to SSD volume and some shared folders (big data) to HDD volume? Or it does not have any sense to split to SSD based volume and HDD based volume? Its mainly related to performance of Directory Services, MailPlus Server, DNS server, HOMES to have on SSD volume, versus photos, ActiveBackup data, videos to have on HDD volume?
