If you want to know how a rock band should sound, look no further than this. The groove, the timing, the way the tones and parts are layered, the way they create space in the song for each other, the dynamics from the quiet instrumental breakdown all the way to full kickass mode in the last chorus. An absolute clinic, one of the best bands ever, and such a loss. RIP Mr. Petty, you are sorely missed.

Have you read Conversations with Tom Petty by Paul Zollo, who is a musicologist? So much attention paid to the W.Zanes bio but this was ALLLLL about the music. To be treasured. Also was surprised and delighted by David Byrne's What Music Means. And yes, Tom Petty who died of a surfeit of responsibility to his audience, unique in that respect is indeed sorely missed. I was sorry that his widow Dana has been getting flack for the posthumous release of American Treasure; with Benmont Tench, they collected from the archives tracks that meant something to them, out of love. A creepy journalist had Dana in tears; absolute bully. No place for that sort of behaviour. Tx for post; we could go on and on ...

It was always great to see Tom live, especially outdoors at night. He knew how to work the crowd and at any time during any song he could hold his mic, point it to the crowd and we all took over singing vocals for him. I truly believe he let us sing to give his voice some breaks so he could play longer. Tom loved and respected us as much as we still love and respect him.

I'm also a guitar player, and I want to know why Tom Petty barely played on this tune, and when he did the volume was almost down all the way. There was a third guitar player way over on the right that was clearly handling the rhythm, while the UF guy played the lead. The rhythm player was almost completely left out of the video. Any ideas? Yes. Such sweet pleasure at the time we all need it the most. I am saddened by his death. I am a chronic pain patient. He was in a lot of pain and he was not able to get the proper medical treatment. He was viewed as a drug seeker and he had no choice but to turn to the streets. And he had no idea that what he was getting was laced with fentanyl. I am just thankful that he is not here to witness the Civil Unrest and suffering that is in our future. That would have really hurt him to his core. There will never be another TOM PETTY!

There were us invisible girls at the high school dance too. Wish we coulda found each other back then. And so we graduated, then off we went into that Great Wide Open. Few years, decades go by....we finally shed the braces, the glasses, grew into our bodies, found something we loved doing-and were getting paid for it! We made a road trip back to the hometown-I dunno, maybe some family thing/function. And all those girls who never saw you, and all those boys who never saw us, well, they never went anywhere except precipitous marriages, irretrievably broken by 25, 26, couple kids later, old, cynical long before their time: Girls look hard, used up, the guys look lost, broken, mean. And you, sir were spotted in town now smokin’ hawt and a great catch to all those girls who never saw you then but honey, they saw you now. Oh, did. they. ever..... And so do I. You truly are and always were a great guy, now a man and I hope every last “invisible guy at the high school dance” found a genuinely loving, sincere partner, the one you always deserved.

Man I miss these guys. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers were the best. I have followed them right from the start. I lived in FL for over 40 years, 2 of it in Gainesville. There were likenesses of Tom painted on numerous buildings and walls outside UF. He was indeed the Gainesville "Prodigal Son".

We will not see the likes of this again in this lifetime. Consummate American musicianship on display here. This is what professional musicians sound like after working together for 40 years. Steve Ferrone is a marvel and his timing is incredible but I still miss Stan for the incredible groove and chemistry he brought to the Heartbreakers and to Tom in particular. I think of Tom Petty often and what a truly unique and real person he was in every sense - no bullshit - just pure love for the music in the highest regard. RIP good sir. Not sure I’ll ever get over the loss. I’m forever thankful for KZbin for the chance to visit these moments of greatness in time.

Tom has this grace...effortless....in sync with everything....his best shows flowed through the audience and back over the band. Mike Campbell is brilliant.

I miss you, Tom Petty. I was lucky enough to attend a few concerts. The last time I saw you was surrounded by the mountains in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. You stopped singing and had spot lights on two people in the crowd that you noticed fighting. Your kind words of "come on, let's have peace... and love" instantly quieted down, or embarrassed them through all of our eyes on them. We all came away from the concert thinking if you were not already a fan of Tom Petty you would be now after watching this gentle man play great rock and roll. A great musician and person.

Not just my favorite Petty song but, in my admittedly biased opinion, best song ever.....it does that much for me. Makes me smile, makes me move and, for a short time, makes me 18 again. Thanks, Tom!!!

Greatest American Rock and roll band to walk this earth. I’m lucky enough to see them 4 times in my short life. RIP Petty.

I first came to Tom Petty in the late seventies, and he and the Heartbreakers were a fresh breath of kickass, melody-forward bar band rock in an era of overboard stadium rock...still one of the GOAT.

@@MrSTOUT73 He is doing well. Saw FM at the Forum a few months ago. Also saw the original Dirty Knobs with Mike, Ron Blair, Steve Ferrone, Jason SInay, and a fabulous keyboard player whose name escapes me. Missed Benmont. But they sounded fantastic! (Both FM & the DKs.) Cannot wait for the Knobs' upcoming album and tour!
