Barenboim & Vengerov: Brahms' Violin Sonata No.3

Maxim Vengerov and Daniel Barenboim discuss and perform Brahms' Violin Sonata No.3 in D minor, opus 108.
Warner Classics has released eleven recordings by Maxim Vengerov since 1992. These include a Beethoven and Brahms violin sonatas disc, a virtuoso show-stoppers album and the Bruch and Mendelssohn Violin Concertos with the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra/Kurt Masur, which won three European music awards. Vengerov's Tchaikovsky and Glazunov violin concertos with the Berlin Philharmonic/Claudio Abbado and his Sibelius and Nielsen violin concertos with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra/Daniel Barenboim have also attracted outstanding reviews.
His Prokofiev and Shostakovich first violin concertos CD with the London Symphony Orchestra/Mstislav Rostropovich, which was triumphantly received and honoured as Record of the Year by Gramophone, was followed up with the release of the same composers' respective second violin concertos, an album that won the Edison Award 1997 for Best Concerto Recording.

Hmm, actually the explanation is in this clip. I'm sure it was in the Playing By Heart documentary. He describes it as that journey of a young man who has left home in make his way in the world and then returned after some time. The home is the same, but his perception of it is made different by the journey.

I love Brahms Violin Sonatas, but Daniel has kinda ruined it for me. I can only listen to his recordings of these sonatas... so many violinists I never got to enjoy playing cause it's not him on the piano...

Vengerov is ALWAYS playing too late!!! And Barenboim doesnt notice it???? He did a reference recording with Zukerman!!!!! Terrible…decadent.

Whatttt??? Why such a laconic comment... Oistrakh was a great violinist, but so is Maxim! And Barenboim on the piano is not bad also!!! So, "worst version" - I think not, quite opposite, maybe one of the top versions!!

Actually, the reason I am here is that I've just heard the last movement of the sonata played by another violinist and remembered how I loved Vengerov&Barenboim's version!!
