This movie brought the world of barflies & barroom buffoonery not only to the mainstream yet to a loftier dimension altogether, one that was both sublime & comically revolting. And although Bukowski finely described that world with sordid detail, wit & philosophical rumination it was Mickey Rourke who brought it to vivid, powerful & hilarious life, giving a performance that was as captivating as the character whom he depicted was shameless in his drunken shenanigans & degenerate ways. Basically Mickey Rourke gave an Oscar worthy rendering of Bukowski's literary creation. Legendary! This movie is an epic classic!

@c3789 I love Faye Dunaway, too - I wish she could have a comeback like Rourke did. This is one of my favorite performances of hers, though I always find her wonderful. She would have been a star in the 30's (she was a star for a while in the 70's) and her acting ability puts most of the so-called actresses of today to shame. Mickey Rourke is my favorite actor (for many reasons) and I thought the two of them in this film had such an unlikely but fantastic chemistry.

This was filmed at The Royal Palms Hotel in Los Angeles. I used to live there as a child in the mid 1960’s. This brings back memories.
