This river is a beast when its up high and it gets a lot higher than this. I just read an article that a tagged whitetail buck swam the river 4 times even when in flood, from Mississippi to Arkansas and back. 🤔🤔

The buck couldn't remember what state he lived in.

That river is the most frightening body of water I've ever seen, in real life for me. Look at how small the cars are crossing above.

Thats insane!!! I load barges on the Mississippi river Iowa. Seen some break away before but the tugs caught them before they smashed anything. That is 100k's if not millions worth of product lost. My best guess those are grain barges or dry chemical fertilizer since they have covers on them.
@dave340cars7 жыл бұрын
Grain. More likely than not. Fertilizer usually loads down south and is pushed north. This is an ARTcO boat. Probably doing the 6 long south bound thing. Which adds up to 42 loads.
@allanhunter23286 жыл бұрын
you are so right they are grain barges most likely from MN.

@jasonharper26016 жыл бұрын
looks like a worst-case scenario. those barges that broke loos are battering rams. must be a bugger to chase them down and recover them
@sequoyah596 жыл бұрын
That was a hard hit. The crossing there at high flow is a bear. Just not enough rudder authority to get the job done going downstream. The bridges at Little Rock are maybe worse.
@riverrat01545 жыл бұрын
The little rock bridges aint that bad in high water. Just have to flank thru the i 30 bridge

Wow! I had no idea the river could move so fast in the bigger sections like Vicksburg! I was assuming the river would be moving along like a slow stroll. Knowing this now, I can't imagine the fuel it takes to ship goods upstream. Does upstream traffic match the downstream traffic in terms of tonnage? (That may sound like a silly question, but I can't imagine fighting that much water flow to move a boat or barge upstream.)
@adamfowler54754 жыл бұрын
Yeah it's called a moving ocean for good reason. Whirlpools, eddy currents, undertows, it is a scary, turbulent sight in Vicksburg.

Read Mark Twain's book about being a river boat pilot. If memory serves It's called Life on the Mississippi. Those big rivers dont play. Mississippi Missouri Ohio Ect. Need a big john boat for them 150 hp min. 200+ preferred. And a commercial marine band radio. There is an old saying. Never turn your back on the sea. That means rivers too.

A helluva lot of fuel. We are talking 2 or 3 miles per gallon if that against the current.

@Likedbymany A small pleasure craft that the average person owns gets 4 to 7 MPG average depending on engine size.

It moves the same speed in all sections. From 1 end to the other. It may appear to b moving faster in narrow parts, but it's not

Iron American Dream on KZbin. It's not really much of a barge once it's underwater. After it sinks it is more of an obstacle. Makes you wonder how many are down there.

Actually, I am a locksmith and I was working at the Ameristar casino. I was in the loading dock parking lot and had just gotten back in my van and was about to leave when I heard the crash when the barge hit the bridge. I stopped and jumped out and started filming.
