Synergy between staff is super important, especially in rush periods. I used to work with two other people and our chemistry was so good. We just knew instinctively what each of us needed. And we had such savage banter that customers would tell us they enjoyed waiting because it was like watching an episode of their favourite TV show. We got the job done and had a crap tonne of fun on the way.

Okay I just wanna vent. I’m so jealous sometimes because I’m never lucky. After being at this toxic coffee job for almost a year I’m finally leaving. Being on the coffee machine we weren’t allowed to talk to other staff, just work, work, work we were all terrified of the boss as she was just abusive. So please, if you’re ever going to work in hospitality make sure you have a good atmosphere with co workers and bosses. It’s not worth it, especially since the job is stressful enough

I don't know where you are, but in America, loads of people love to talk about "poor life choices". Yet you don't have to look far to find people who are in leadership positions, positions of any kind of authority, or who just have the money to start their own businesses who are, every single day, miserable and tortured and taking it out on the staff. The excuse is always "it's hard". Poor life choices also include those NOT at the bottom. Other things do play into it, domestic violence, alcoholism, kids being kids, etc etc etc just life. We all have difficulties. But that's just the point. We ALL have difficulties. This massive social barrier has not even been talked about yet, much less approached as a problem that affects the economy and society as a whole. Accountability for bosses, same as staff. You're smart to move on.

I lost a job I loved to bits everyday along with the coworkers and patients someone might dream of having! I had to resign because their were legal situations happening and I didn’t want to be held accountable if anything happened to someone or me that I cared about! It was all our boss that was screwing everything up legally and us as employees had to stretch our selves very thin. I do regret leaving and not sticking by to see the outcome because I was offered to become the boss before I left, I declined the offer because I had no experience and their were so many laws broke I didn’t want to get into trouble and each of us employees had written a letter about the problems we were having at work.. I don’t think I’ll come across a good work space and team fellowship like the one I had there not for a long time maybe another 5 or 10 years from now but by then I hope I can open my own coffee and bakery shop!

I'm glad you quit and I hope you're at a better job with a friendly work environment instead of a toxic one. I can see why you like to be alone at the coffee machine. My wife and I can't be in the kitchen cooking at the same time, we made it a rule. When I cook, I'm like you, where you move from one end to the other and you don't want to be looking around and getting slowed down by someone in the way. It's kind of like a "dance", the way one moves around when they really know what they are doing. It's hypnotizing watching you move so gracefully and quickly, while doing what you do.

I did three thousand dollar hours back to back one time. I even went back to that Bellacinos later after my divorce just to run the oven one day a week to keep my mind off of things. I started about 4 months ago at a small town specialty shop. It's a big touristy area, and I caught the end of summer. Once I learned how to do everything behind the bar, it was fun to start busting out drink after drink. You get into a flow, and all your efficiency skills pop out. From time to time though, it could be stressful (especially when I'd look up and there'd be 40+ in line. That usually only happened on holidays, but still).

When i was trying to get a job behind a bar in a well respected restaurant where they sold a lot of coffee they had a list of 6 different coffees and a time limit of 3 minutes. In attempt to try that on my first day I smashed a glass and didn't get the job. Respect to all baristas worldwide, people don't understand how stressful your job is. Not even mentioning customer service etc.
