Can every one please stop mentioning Fleming on Leontyne videos; Fleming is a lyric and mimics dramatic roles, while Price is a spinto and these pieces are her prime role. So, please stop comparing them.
@theartfulme18987 жыл бұрын
I agree to an extent: talking about someone else in a singer's video is surely annoying. But Price herself said she wasn't a pure spinto, but rather a lirico spinto (as she put it, 'a juicy lyric').
@piperlapap7 жыл бұрын
A spinto-sopran is in principle both a lyric AND a dramatic sopran with a certain reserve of potential power in her voice. Ultimately, it is crucial to what the audience likes better. I’m sure that in a direct comparison, the listeners would vote for Renée.
@1belcantofan7 жыл бұрын
"Spinto" comes from the Italian verb "spingere" - to push...literally a more lyrical voices that CAN push towards the dramatic side. The whole term IS lyrico-spinto...there isn't a separate just "spinto" voice. Leontyne Price was a lyrico-spinto, which made her ideal to carry off MANY of the roles of Giuseppe Verdi. While she is simply stunning in this role, even she struggles ever so slightly in the VERY brutal Act IV of this wonderful opera-when those more dramatic leanings are pushed to their outer reaches when she has to complete the marathon of "D'amor sull'ali rosee, the Miserere, the caballetta "Tu vedrai", followed by the duet with the Baritone, and then the final prison scene. This is something that a voice like Fleming's was simply not designed to handle...along with a few other recent singers who have pushed their voices unnaturally into this repertoire. Price was self-deprecating when she referred to herself as "just a lyric" or what not...she certainly was not "just" a lyric.
@ozielich5 жыл бұрын
@@piperlapap In a direct comparison, or indirect, or twice removed indirect comparison between Leontyne and Renée, people would definitely not vote for Flemming.
@chiedu900694 жыл бұрын
Agreed. They don't even sing the same rep. And mentioning Fleming here is truly bizarre since Fleming never sang Leonora onstage professionally and Price sang the role unforgettably for 2 decades!

I wrote it under many of her videos. She got me, directly causing my love for the opera. I heard her almost forty years ago singing "Tacea la Notte Placida" on the LP record - Karajan. I had no idea about opera at that time. Her voice spilled around me going directly to my heart. Only she can sing it like this. "My God, she is amazing. Who is she?". Leontyne Price. What to add? Simply a woman! You meet her and fall in love... to her voice in this case. Who cares about details.

I completely agree. Today's singers regale themselves in affectations, mannerisms, and the organ pedal effect, so much so that they reduce the pleasure of hearing frank and honest presentations of this great music. It's so true, Verdi' music is enough. Léontine Price knew this.

Leontyne Price in her middle and late vocal career had the luck to have had a voice teacher who helped her to refine her instrument. She has complete vocal control from bottom to top. Her breathing is never faulty nor is the movement from one register to another. She also in later vocal life was able to rid, what a voice teacher once characterized as "the negroid clutch", that is forcing the vocal chorda instead of letting them vibrate with the passage of the breath. Smoothe vocal line depends on letting the breath flow freely over the vocal chords at all times, even when dramatic gutteral emphasis is called for. Congratulations Leontyne Price. You reached the top of your vocal class and a great career. We love you. I can say the same for the late Shirley Verette, a friend and colleague.

You do not have to tell me what Leontyne was, is or will be. I know everything about her career, recordings or voice. First of all, this role as much as people love to say is it is a "Spinto role" it is NOT...this role is the same type of voice it is required for Traviata = DRAMATIC SOPRANO WITH NATURAL COLORATURA. Is not that Leontyne had a "lazy" coloratura is more that she did not have any coloratura whatsoever. And Leonora is design for a dramatico coloratura throat. Understood? Thank you.
