@@choirboyzcutleryoutdoors head cold that won't go away, but that's what happens with school age children! I have gotten a lot of hate over the years trying to explain to people that the knife Jim used was not the big old, maybe German inspired, clip point that people associate with him. I have described it as a modified kitchen knife in the past and that is the same reason the Prather appealed to me, it doesn't make me think bowie-it makes me think Gaucho knife from South America. As much as I love bells and whistles (think Nopealope), you can not beat a basic knife design at the end of the day.

Ya know, I've read and looked into finding the original bowie for decades now. I have no choice but to agree that this is it. It is comparable to Northern European Long Knives, too [Many of the Scrams being closer to even this shape...]. I hope to find a way to get one since I've been studying knives for over 60 years. The ones I have found are about 1/3 of a months income for me now [Social Security]. I think it is worth it. I live in a feral hog problem area and have come within inches of stepping on a couple - which will wake you up. IF I manage to get one of these I would carry where hogs might be there. Oh, and I've seen more than a few KZbin videos: you ain't so amateur as you say, even with misses, but thank you for keeping that attitude!!! 'Tis refreshing! One reason I suggest you ain't so newbie about it would include the stab test is how much pressure you AREN'T putting into that stab. You're a big ol' boy and could stab it like you were on a Cold Steel video, so this way less than you could stab actually DOES show the knife! Carry on, Bro, carry on! PS: Feather Sticks: I'd much rather find or make a fuzz and make some tiny thin slivers than make feather sticks. I've always done that since maybe 1968 and never really needed to feather stick except to just do it. 'Tis a nice test, but... some cotton or natural fuzz, even blade spine fuzz is ten times easier!

Though the facts are obscure and contradictory, the first version of the bowie apparently was designed in 1827 for Jim by his brother Rezin. It was a hunting knife with a straight, single-edged blade about nine inches long and one and a half inches wide.
@kongandbasses8732

Yes, I remember this blade shape from the video series "knives of note" where they once went over the complete display of weapons Jim Bowie gave to his friend. This one is known as the "Metamora Knife", an Indian Chief the actor has played a lot, using this knife as carryage. And I know this blade shape, as I have had some of the old butcher knives of my great-grandmother. They looked lot aloke this Bark River. I am a big fan of Bark River knives, they found out something about the convex grind that makes their knives razor sharp. Their designs speak to me, every single one. But those knives appear to be quite pricey in Germany. I just had some Gunnys in my hand a friend of mine (who has no kids and some money to spend...) has some of them, and he carrys them when we go for fishing. Man, I would carry this knife if I was able to lay my hands on one. #22aday Stay safe everybody, and stay blessed. Greetings from Germany!

I have one of these and have not used it nearly as hard as the one in this video. I cut a small cedar limb maybe 1-2 inches in diameter and the edge bent. Not just the very edge but the actual blade behind the edge also bend. I have never seen anything like it in any of my other knives. Not to mention every one of these knives seem to have some pretty major grind issues. I will contact bark river today and I suspect it could be a ht issue considering yours was fine.

I love my Bark River JX 5 The Vengeful One , I let someone use it and they hit a rock in the ground while cutting wood and chipped the blade so I had to re profile it . I do not have any electric sharpener, all I have is a Smiths 3 sided stone and a ceramic rod and a strop . It took me almost 20 hours to get it back to the way it should be but I also sanded it by hand from 500 to 3000 in 500 grit increments . It looks great , but CPM3V is a bitch to do by hand but I love my knives so it went by quickly and I am very proud of the results. Just try and see how easy it is to sharpen a convex grind on a flat stone and try it with CPM3V once , it will test your patients very quickly lol .
