What engineering. They are assembling watch parts that came straight from China. Who do you think makes the cases, hands, dials, and probably most of the movement . Don’t be fooled.

In the late 1800s, some Swiss watchmakers went to visit the watch factories in the US, where mass production with standardized parts was happening. They apparently were blown away by what they saw and couldn’t decide whether it was “real” watchmaking or not. I think an 1890 Waltham factory manager would look at Tudor’s operation and say, “Yep, good job!” 😊

Tudor is a great brand, this video just solidifies it further for me. Value is just off the charts. Quick story about sub-supplier network. That concept of Tudor owned companies sub-supplying components is common in industry. I thought my story might be interesting as a perspective on this. I own a painting shop that works on Aerospace and military jobs (not watch industry at all). I had an offer once to get bought out partially and we'd be part of a network of suppliers that would deliver finished goods to big companies like Raytheon, Northrup etc. I ultimately chose to turn it down. My main reason was specific to the company that was spearheading the whole thing. I was doing work for them already and they couldn't pay their bills, always lied about payments etc. When I asked them where all this money is coming from to buy into several companies at the same time, they couldn't answer or dodged the question. Sketch of course. However, I probably would have turned it down if the money was there. My company was just a few years old, and although some guaranteed contracts would have been great, I banked on myself knowing the potential growth was much higher not being capped by demand of just a few customers. I had a steady base of customers already so made sense to me. Turned out to be right. That company who made me the offer is 250 days behind on payments to all their suppliers, including me, and still pulling that lying crap. My business is steadily growing 10-15% per year. Guess I made the right call.

I have mixed feelings about the innovation seen in this video. It’s very impressive engineering and the precision of these watches must be something extraordinary at the same time as you sated the watch looses a bit of soul, or magic and that feeling of being put together by hand, piece by piece, which is one of the best things about watches.
@drewsleyy3836
@drewsleyy3836 5 ай бұрын
Totally agreed. Nomos are able to offer more truly "in house" movements with visible decoration, equal or better specs, and a far more human and endearing touch at an equally competitive price point. This wouldn't turn me off from buying Tudor if I ultimately like the design and can afford the watch, but it doesn't endear me to the brand at all

Great presentation and work, Adrian! I have a feeling that Rolex probably does the exact same thing as Tudor regarding highly automated assembly, but perhaps doing more in-house fabrication of component parts. A more physically integrated supply chain, but most likely the same sort of robotic assembly process. If that’s the case, then Tudor is the far more fairly priced of the two brands.
@KingPrawn666
@KingPrawn666 Жыл бұрын
Was just thinking the same. Assuming Rolex are doing the same thing, they are essentially mugging everyone off. No one will be upset with Tudor given the price point but it does make you question the gap between Rolex and other higher end brands.
@nxpj2flyers517
@nxpj2flyers517 Жыл бұрын
Rolex might have assembly automation, but everything is sourced and done in-house. It's not an assembly line there where parts ship in from different factories, and they're assembled in a sequential order in-house. Rolex makes the parts for their watches and then assembles them, which means they have full control over their product lines. But in order to pump out a million watches a year.. they're not building the parts by hand. So a Rolex is still a more special watch than Tudor, even if Tudor has a leg up being METAS certified, not just COSC certified.

@christophersapsford1828 Жыл бұрын
You talk about the way that robotic assembly helps keep cost down by automating time consuming processes - like attaching the hands. But I'll bet that Rolex uses just as much automation in their processes. In fact I'd imagine that being the same company, the Rolex assembly lines look pretty much identical to these at Tudor. A Rolex probably doesn't cost that much more to make than a comparable Tudor, granted the Rolex cases and bracelets are in house, and finishing levels are (marginally) higher. But the marketing spend for Rolex will be in a different league, and much of the higher Rolex retail price will be needed to recoup it. We know from the grey market that Rolex could charge significantly more that they do and would not lose sales, and thus we know that brand cachet does much more for profit margins than any manufacturing cost savings can create.

Hasn’t changed my mind (I already enjoy Tudor and knew they were loving to Metas cert. ) Thanks for the tour vid, great to see more details from what they’ve been slowly rolling out (footage wise) since W&W. Personally I’d go for a Pelagos over the Omega, but I will say this, I’d like to see Tudor start to limit their watch cycles down and start to add in more variety. Otherwise it starts to get a bit stale.

Coming from an engineering background and working with product consistency on a daily basis, seeing this gives me far greater faith in the Tudor product long term. While some comments are about the loss of "soul" I see this is as a way for them to control the product and make sure everything they sell is what they say it is. To me, it means I can rely on a Tudor watch day after day to not miss meetings and not worry about the accuracy of my watch over the course of a month or more. My Seiko runs 45sec slow a day, and while I love the style and ruggedness, I genuinely cannot rely on it for timekeeping after a week due to that inaccuracy and have actually arrived late to things due to it. While I love the romantic idea of a watchmaker making each watch by hand, I just know the reality of that is inconsistency between watch units, or a massively higher price to allow for remediation work at the end of assembly to bring it in-line with performance specifications. Tudor makes watches that are beautiful, but not art. They're meant to function. Other brands make art that are watches, and are meant to be admired, not necessarily relied upon

Adrian, thanks so much for showing us how Tudor makes it watches. If I did not know you were in Switzerland, I would have thought the factory is in Japan. You asked if this changes our perception of the Tudor brand, and it definitely does! I wanted to buy a Rolex Daytona, but realized only a few customers are ever going to get them from the AD, so I bought the Tudor Panda Chronograph when it was first announced. I absolutely love wearing it, and am thrilled that it is a high quality product! I am wondering if you asked Tudor if there are any restrictions on developing designs that may compete against sister Rolex. Essentially, is Tudor free to design a watch without consulting Rolex for permission? If you did not ask, can you speculate from conversations you had while on tour at the factory? P.S. Absolutely brilliant comment you made at 0:24 : "it's a day after, 'yesterday'!" Simply brilliant!

Pretty soon Tudor will have in-house movements that are METAS certified and in increasingly slimmer and more refined cases. NICE! I kinda knew most of this but hadn't seen the details. It also kinda shows - from a distance - how most likely Rolex is building their watches. As Tudor is about 250k watches per year and Rolex is about 1M watches per year. Which means that IMHO the Rolex proces might even be more scrutinous than that of Tudor (but then this automated working is as scrutinous as it gets imho), but making the 1M or 250k is about the same ballpark. Only Rolex might have some more factory set diamoands watches etc. which is much more manual work. BTW Kenissi is NOT wholly owned by Tudor! It is 20% owned by Chanel. Plus there is a strong partnership with Breitling. So e.g. the Tudor MT5813 is based on the Breitling B01 movement.

I own an BB GMT (COSC) and a SM 300 (METAS) and can easily find a difference between precision of both watches. When it comes to the point that both Tudor an Omega are giving a similar certification for similar products I would still go for my sm300 because of the look and the bracelet. It's marvelous and cost me (back in August 2020) only a few 100 € more than the BB GMT on bracelet

I’d take the Pelagos even though I don’t like titanium, but the bracelet is the killer. I’m not a huge fan of automation, but I appreciate the fact of how expensive a fully hand made watch is and the touch of hand make assembly is fine enough. I have a BBP, BB31 for the Mrs and quality is good. I do get a different feeling when the Sub goes on the rosy though, it just feels more balanced. So I really hope Tudor keeps improving on that side of things too.

I dig videos like this, more please. Tudor SA has never manufactured a watch component and that was the whole business model from the beginning so Hans could sell quality watches at reasonable prices. When I pointed that out over the years on forums, pretty much nobody believed me. Tudor SA has always used good quality Swiss suppliers but don’t actually manufacture parts. Now with Kenissi, Tudor have gotten into the movement game in a big way, making a good product even better. But you forgot to say Chanel owns 20% of Kenissi. One thing I’m very curious about: where does Kenissi refurbish the movements sent in for service? Since Tudor is historically an outsourcing company, it would make sense to outsource the basic refurbishment, then have Kenissi staff do the final assembly and regulation before finishing up their hot-swap service model. Hey, did you meet Cole Pennington?

Good Day; I love Tudor. All that’s missing is adding lume to the gmt bezels. I think would make the gmt a lot more attractive and of course a lot easy to see your gmt time not just the gmt hand and not just the indices.

i feel like Rolex does the same exact thing of tudor in their factories, like any other major commercial brand, but i believe they will never open doors to public to avoid let customers really realize it.

great video… having bought a couple of Omegas (Bronze Gold Seamaster and steel seamaster) from WOS in the last 18 months I thought I’d ask about the availability of the Rolex Sub and new Explorer. Got a long winded mail back with the Sub priced at £8.5K but not available, but for the Exp I could ‘register my interest’ but would have to make an appointment and visit the dealership in person to do so…lots of flannel about hand made, no waiting lists etc and to be honest, not unexpected. Looking at the Rolex boutique with watches to see but never buy seems totally illogical…bought a new Tudor Ranger last week and totally happy with it, brilliantly made and keeps better time than any of my Rolexes.

Tudor is setting up nicely to become a behemoth down the line. Rolex has invested heavily in R&D for Tudor to be so efficient and technologically advanced. As someone in software, this automation is impressive because the room for issue deviation has to be small. While the Tudor price point is lower now, they won’t stay there long term. Their designs and movements are becoming more refined as time goes by. Rolex knows how to take time, reinvest in vertical assembly, so Tudor will likely be more in house over time. I love seeing how a Tudor are growing. I would buy a METAS Pelagos over a Seamaster.

Great video Adrian.A real eye opener.I am a cyclist and they have been all over the Giro de Italia.Even the lady counting down the time trial start today was showing off he Panda Chrono.Very sharp those Swiss and getting rid of labour and old skills make them affordable.Its the future.Sad but true.Mass production.

Nice video and thank you for showing us this. Very impressive. As a Swiss guy I can only think the best of this brand. I never considered buying a Tudor since I already own a few Rolexes and didn’t see the need of owning a Tudor. This video makes me reconsider that thought. They are pretty cool watches

Thank you for this video. Very clever automation process. Tudor should be proud of them self. This right way for repetitive and accurate tests. But also helping the workers to work more easily. The whole factory is very thought through very well. Good job Tudor. You give inspiration for classical watchmaker brands to re-think

Top content, and as a Seamaster 300 pro owner, I'm now considering Tudor next because Metas cert at that price point is impressive. The reason why as, in the production line, is equally impressive and soul destroying. The future is here for watch manufacturing.
Settling the debate once and for all: Is Tudor really the poor mans Rolex?
