The great Peter Barkworth! I loved 'Telfords Change'... a masterclass in acting. He brought pathos and a level of believability to the characters that he portrayed, that few actors can match. I think it's time that someone wrote a biography on this very fine actor.

Sadly this lovely accent is becoming heard much less in British film and TV. I came across Barkworth by chance (had never heard of him, but I found out he was in a film I'd watched as a child: International Velvet, although I don't remember him in it) after finding and watching Telford's Change out of curiosity about another actor (Michael Maloney, his first screen role). From there I found Late Starter, two TV plays, and The Price, all on KZbin. Great stuff!

A superb and very natural actor. I agree that Telford's change is a masterclass in acting. I had the pleasure of meeting him once when I was browsing an art gallery in Hampstead, charming and urbane, as you might expect.

An outstanding actor very highly rated when you see or listen to anything Peter Barkworth was in its no wonder he won best actor twice. How lucky to have met him I wish I had, my favourite actor of all time. Thank you x

To this day I remember Peter acting with Hannah Gordon. I remember my heart crumbled on seeing just one random expression. I remembered Peter the other day. Hence watching him now. He certainly graced our screens.

I love this guy in every thing I see him in. I thought he may have been the voice-over on the "War of the Worlds" album but apparently that was Richard Burton.

It was Burton, yes.

Not in his prime. He was rated as one of the finest television actors of his day. Twice a Bafta winner for Best Actor. A better description might be 'deserves to be much better remembered'. He withdrew from the profession in the late 80s and so passed from memory too quickly. Very much an actor's actor and my father always loved watching his work.

Barkworth wrote about & taught acting & is considered an 'actor's actor' but he is in my opinion one of the most mechanical & least versatile actors I know. I've seen him in various roles & he gives more or less the same performance in each. I'm currently rewatching 'Manhunt', surely one of the most miscast tv serials made with 3 painfully unconvincing leads in Barkworth, Alfred Lynch & Cyd Hayman & his performance as 'Vincent' is hopeless. He just doesn't seem to know who his character is or how he should be behaving, he has always struck me as one of those actors ( Olivier is another ) who give the impression of performing to a mirror rather than to an audience. He also has a terrible habit in 'Manhunt' of shouting 'shut up!' in a shrill manner that is really aggravating to hear.
