Thanks for this very helpful video. Our Barlow 23-26 is from 1980 and now works just like the new ones again.

2 x Barlow 25 primaries here...just about to overhaul and get rechromed. Got 4 secondary Canon 20's to do as well. Thanks for the upload...they are pretty simple devices but always good to have something to familiarise yourself with before beginning the overhaul.

Thanks so much. The neglected winches I inherited required a lot more pushing and shoving, but your video was invaluable.

Good video. I use grease on everything except pawls and ratchets - where oil is specified.

I'm just working on a Barlow 24. I notice you didn't actually put any grease on the demo winch in your video. Also notice guys in other videos are really greasing the heck out of everything. So what's better in your opinion ? To grease, or not to grease ? That is the question.
@79cd363 жыл бұрын
I'm in freshwater, which means a lot less corrosion, but yes, I only lightly grease the winch. Too much grease only gets gummed up faster, in my opinion. Whatever the case, regular maintenance is a must.

Do you have a description of Maintenance of Barlow 3-way Winch ? Or is it quite similar to this 2-way winch ? I don't know the type actually but it is built approx. 1980 and installed on a Sweden Yacht Comfort 34.

Very useful video! I have 2 x 24 Barlow winches and was able to adapt sufficiently without ever having serviced one before and no parts left over :) p.s I oiled the pawls and greased the bearings only. Was I supposed to grease the cog wheels too?
@79cd365 жыл бұрын
A dab of grease would be fine on the cogs. Glad it was helpful.

Can I use de natured alcohol to clean with?

I'd go with mineral spirits or kerosene if you want to dissolve the gunk.

I'm sorry, I don't recall. I'd assume it was metric, though.
