I feel like, if H.R. Giger did a David Attenborough style wildlife program, these would be the types of creatures he'd be describing.

This was one of my favorite books as a child and was printed in 1979. Why the hell was there never a SEQUEL book? So many science fiction books have been written since this book was printed and there are so many science fiction books written earlier that were not covered. He NEVER made a SEQUEL. WHY THE HELL NOT?

I'm lucky enough to own this book. Barlowe illustrates aliens with such sincerity that one can't help but imagine them being real, he does such an incredible job of making even the most luridly strange anatomies seem plausible. It's so easy to envision socializing with these species (their source narrative and canon friendliness/hostility notwithstanding) Barlowe treats them like people and it's not something you see too often in sci-fi and speculative art. P.S. I appreciate you posting the cover art of the source books, that was a nice touch :3

I had this book back in High School along side some of the Dragon Riders of Pern hardbacks. I literally did a double-take when I saw the cover on the thumbnail! I hadn't thought about it for years! :D

Appreciate this video! I have a physical copy of this book I found in a Half-Priced Bookstore a while back, and it's a really cool book. The artistry and believability of these illustrated extraterrestrials is spectacular! I would definitely recommend this book.

I love this book. Not just because it's such an interesting work of fantastic fiction, but that it's a catalogue of creativity from some legitimately classic and excellent works of fantasy and sci-fi, from some truly legendary authors. A great addition to any fan's library.

This is superb, thank you. While not science, it's amazing to witness such creativity in fiction.

Why the hell is Hollywood dragging its feet on making MOVIES based on these aliens? Barlow's guide was written in 1979 and the books described are even older and all come from an era that lacked CGI. Imagine how much these stories could come to life if as much money and effort was put into them as AVATAR. But no. Hollywood just keeps making superhero movies and Transformer sequels.

@@Zurroundpartially cowardly decision making in terms of taking risks for new things, as well as, like Star Trek and wars aliens, people with abit of shit in their faces is way cheaper.

iHi! sory for the bad english, i m french..and i was thinking about that!it could give: humans, pale skinned beings, inhabitants of the planet earth ... invasive species, extremely destructive, not intended to survive, due to the extreme ability to destroy everything, including their environment, habitats, and even their own offspring! humans venerate a bizarre god, made of colored paper with numbers and called "money"...^^

Almost everything that I owned was destroyed in a wild fire a few years ago but I once had a book called GALACTIC ALIENS and it was a list of dangerous aliens to avoid in the cosmos and one of them was called "The Human" and it described beings from a planet called Earth which was the 3rd planet in a solar system of 9 planets (Pluto was a planet when this book was written) and it described their level of tech which was very primitive, their only space travel was reaching their own moon. Then it described why they must be avoided and it showed a bunch of scary looking soldiers in a war heavily armed and a nuclear explosion and it described the humans as violent warlike and primitive beings who are constantly trying to destroy each other with progressively more violent weaponry. It was pretty sad and funny at the same time.

How many billions of dollars has Hollywood thrown at the TRANSFORMERS movies and these done to death SUPER HERO MOVIES. Why the hell won't they make movies based on the books discussed in this book and other famous science fiction books like RENDEZVOUS WITH RAMA. To be fair A WRINKLE IN TIME and SOLARIS were made into movies but Hollywood has barely scratched the surface. There are so many amazing science fiction books but instead of making big budget movies based on them they keep churning out MARVEL SUPER HERO MOVIES, TRANSFORMERS, AND WAY OVER DONE STAR WARS AND STAR TREK MOVIES.

Simply profit. Sci-fi has always been a niche market.enough people to keep it alive but not thrive. Unfortunately the majority of people do not care about sci-fi. Why release a sci-fi movie 100 people will watch when you can do a romcom or superhero movie 500 people will watch. But I think that is what makes sci-fi great because it is always a passion project that they had to fight for, making the best reach the top, and that passion is picked up by the audience.
