Hey Ho! for all you kids out there; before the fancy hoists they used a pit, dug in the garage floor, to work on the underbody parts. The pit was just a bit narrower than the common wheel base of cars of the era. The pit was long enough that you could walk down three steps from the shop to the base of the pit. It was, of course, cement walls and floor, IF the shop was high class!

I remember the workshop pits too. A mate of mine wanted to have one in his garage, but local council residential zoning regs said this wasn't allowed.....so he dug out a "wine cellar" and placed a bottle of wine in the corner of the pit in case someone checked up on it!

The reason that spiral sheathed cable that goes in the bottom of the distributor is there, that was Ford’s antitheft device. It went from the distributor up to the key, when the key was turned ‘on’, (it was actually a pop out key/button) the switch would ground that wire and complete the circuit through the points. Would be thieves had to work at getting through that armored wire which proved to be somewhat of a deterrent. I know that sounds goofy but that’s why Henry did it. One thing to note, occasionally the wire that runs through that armored spiral sheathing will short out inside there and will drain your battery, burn out the coil and/or prevent the car from being shut off with the key. Love the channel!
