Barn Find Rare 80s classic - bought 40 years ago, parked for 20! Will it run? In this barnfind episode Jonny Smith ventures to a farm in rural Shropshire, where Pete Jones reveals he's owned this lesser known German 'hot saloon' since it was 4 years old. He shared it with his Dad, and then retired it to the garage in the early 2000s. There's a spare car of the same type next to it, and a pair of classic Range Rovers in the adjacent barn.

Got out on I-85 in Atlanta to 2-285... no brakes. Nothing. I said not a word. Drove back in the rain. $1000 for the car became $400. I drove it home to the mountains of NC and fixed it over the weekend. I kept a box of door handle kits in the trunk. I could fix them pdq.

I owned a 80 sport of the same year back in the early 90s. In red which, I think, was the most popular colour at that time but used to go a bit flat over the years. Galvanised, which was a big plus-point. That lovely long-stroke GTi engine was a joy. I'd have one now as a daily driver.

This was an interesting watch. I had 2 new Golf Turbo Diesels, one in 86 the 2nd in 87. In 88 when our 3rd child came along I decided I couldn’t afford to run a new car any more. The diesel Golf was so popular that the VW dealership bought it back off me for a good price. While I tried to find a decent used car they loaned me a red one of those 80s. It was a lovely thing to drive, but in the end I chose practicality & went for a Passat estate. I can still remember the smile that resulted from touring around in that Audi. 👍

Fantastic episode Jonny, cannot remember the last time i seen a Audi 80 let alone alone a Sport. Was also amazed how that Range Rover started on the button.

Thank you, Jonny, for this easy and unruffled re-animation of this Giugiaro-designed classic. The four-door model and Coupe are the essence of Rallying in the mid 1980s and here in North America sales reflected their popularity/practicality. I was surprised to read the seemingly modest horsepower figures on the screen, but as I recall, 110-130 horsepower was typical for cars in this era. This one stands out in all its stickered and bespoilered glory. Love the Ronal wheels and Rally lights, too!

I was waiting for the pressure wash! She cleaned up nicely. That being said, that left-hand-drive Rover is more impressive to me.

Jonny, when power washing a car, do it top down once & use gravity as your friend--the wash will go much quicker. The end result looked good.

Good luck with that. I had an identically engined golf GTi Had nothing but trouble with the car from an incurable misfire, regular clutch cable snaps, wooly gearbox, atrocious brakes oh and did I mention was an absolute rust bucket! Simply glad to see the back of it. Then bought an Astra GTE which was brilliant in comparison, with a peach of an engine! Justifiably worth mega money now. But finally saw sense & bought Japanese ie Honda best engines and gearboxes wonderfully engineered unlike these unreliable underengineered overrated German pieces of junk

I remember we had 2 of these in the family. One automatic and one manual, both same colour. The manual one was quattro, I believe because almost every car we bought since are AWD and lots of them are Audis. :) Great barn find episode. :)

Audi don't seem to want to know about their older models now. That's the impression I get. I sent a local main dealer an email after I recommissioned my old Audi which still has their dealer sticker on it. They didn't even reply 😅

Impressive, nice to see an unusual spec car in such good nick. Seeing that engine brings back nightmares, as they were sparce in Australia in the late 80s, a mate had one. If something went wrong, couldn't beg buy or steal parts, had to be ordered. Compared to the basic aussie 6 of any brand, where we would go to the rubbish dump, rummage in any shed and any auto store, they were a pain to find even simple parts for. When when running smoothly, absolutley brilliant.
