Loved my '57 bug. Bought it for $350 in 1969. Even a clutz like me could keep it tuned, which was a must. The carb manifold would be coated with ice as it idled to warm up. Had to have that new exhaust, what was that called? Wide wheels and tires. Later put Porsche front brakes on it. Such fun.

Hi Mustie, what you called a "sway bar" is actually a unique VW feature and is called "Ausgleichsfeder" in German. It works exactly the opposite way a sway bar does. It makes the suspension of the outer rear wheel softer when taking a road curve, thus somewhat reducing the risk of oversteering.

*What i like to do is that situations is, on the end of my fuel squirter, i put a windshield wiper squirter nosal on the end of it so it send a mist of fuel and not just a stream.* Helps A LOT in situations like this. On a fresher engine or a better tuned one they both work fine.

You might want to try rigging up a starter button wired up to a couple clip leads for playing with starting motors.
Mustie's somebody wrote a message saying a plug wire is not hook up know you can't see it I would have used my brain to send some waves your way but to far from where I live did give good memory's of starting one in cold weather with plug wires not hooked up had a 69 that use to play tricks on me in the 70's then I figure it out woe !! After the smoke cleared and all those donuts , pizza's yeah Orange Crushes thanks enjoyed every minute !¡! : P

It looks like the rusty 1600 single port spent some time in a beach buggy. I'd guess from looking at it that it might be quite tired but it might just have been pulled in the search for more power after getting stuck one too many times...

I like the plug wire just sitting there. You get consumed and excited to start the engine but forgot to put the plug wire back on spark plug. I've been there many times with something like that then just look at it like "you dumb ass" meaning me, lol

Hi my friend "Mustie" Is it really your name....? I am a old retired ex mechanic engineer but as hobby I liked playing around with air cooled engines VW and others petrol or diesel engines. I am so surprised to watch and ear you battling with engines and I don't know if it is KZbin who ask to play for the video purpose extra long trial of engine starting -- because normally the starter should burn out cable and pliers melt down...? noooo all keep's fine ...? OK now I see you have a homemade engine and starter support ......! Good, now I will tell you what I made, was a support holding a old HD drill modified with a socket taking the crankshaft bolt. I used that system to run in crank bearing - run to polish the sleeves and run in conrod bearings But also run to pre- diagnose or pre - starting adjustment I can tell you that system with a HD drill or an auxiliary motor electrical or combustion engine with a extra pulley mounted on crankshaft....This bench will please you --- you can also make a support to use on engine in place in the vehicle........For the Deutz air cooled engine I used a donkey engine like in the old Caterpillar ------------ Hope I have given you the good tips !!! Warm regards.

You gotta love to this day V DUBS still one of the most popular cars. Still holding it down after all these years. My favorite part of being a member of the best Car Club in the World, if you ask me is us VW family never trash VW ANYTHING! Yes from time to time the Old Lady has enough of tripping over VW parts and forces a liquidation of them but whatever it may be you can guarantee it has a new home and won't be lost and wasted forever. If it's rusty and has a VW on it, it's perfect.

V.W. bit the dust in my part of the country because of emission testing, I drove a 74 Thing that drove me nuts trying to get it to pass emissions, Horizontal engine configuration left hydrocarbon emissions too high for state requirements. Before emissions killed them I had a dune buggy (6 volt electrical system) that I drove the beaches in Mexico, had implement tires for flotation and gave 30 miles to the gallon. Sure miss the ole days

Mustie1...some info on blc lights: What is B-L-C? In 1936, as Guide continued to grow and expand, the Brown-Lipe-Chapin Co (B-L-C) was named a plant of Guide Lamp Corp. The Syracuse, NY company turned out lamps, bumper guards and hub caps for GM's eastern section of the United States. I only know of this because of it's ties to syracuse.
