Thanks for the comment, I love nothing more than to pick up old unloved bikes and bring them back to life! I have done a few more since this, I should have made some videos but due to my lack of stable workshop space at the moment, its been difficult. I will be buying another bike project in 2 weeks though, so I will update on here with what I end up getting, and the progress. I am looking at getting a 600 next, mainly because they are cheaper! The 1000 was a lovely machine but the extra weight, made it feel almost indifferent to a 600. I'm sure thats different on more modern bikes where 1000's weight basically the same as a 600!

A great buy, the Fzr's are brilliant bikes. I have a small collection of classic Japanese bikes ranging from a 1972 DT3 250 Enduro to a 1990 FJ1200, including a 1991 FZR600, 3HE model, 1994 FZR600R, 2 FZR1000 Genesis 1988. I used to ride a mate's FZR1000 and loved it. I'm currently riding my YZF750R, 1993 model. I need to get my finger out and get one of the 1000's rebuilt. The only disadvantage of the early FZR1000 is the valve shims are a Yamaha only part. And they are 20 valve heads.

I love the Five valve head Yamahas, Ive got a1FN model FZ750 with early FZR 1000 crank and rods in it bumping it up to 888cc, its got WP rear shock and a genuine Yamaha race kit full exhaust, and 17 inch wheels off a YZF Thunderace.

Just took the plunge and bought an 87 FZR 1000, very early build number, 000172. Trouble is there is very few parts for these left here in NZ, consumables are easy to get its body work i need, i bought it without seeing in the flesh, only photos, and its got a set of glass fibre fairings lowers and top, and although they are painted and aren't damaged, they won't do for the restoration im about to start. Compared to my 86 GSX-R 1100G the Yamaha doesn't seem as well made, and seems to have aged much worse all thing considered.

@@uhtred7860 I live in Scotland and find some FZR1000 panels are on Ebay. The hardest OE panel to find is the nose cone. I had to get a damaged one and get it professionally repaired and painted. The main fairing sides are available on Ebay. A few years ago I got a NOS fuel tank, just as well as the original was rotten! I have had the bodywork restored and painted. I have just started on the restoration. I have checked, cleaned and greased the rear suspension. I had the forks rechromed, fitted new seals and bushes. I also renewed the steering head bearings. I find the build quality is not too bad, I have owned many Suzuki bikes, but not the early GSXR. You will eventually find the parts, it took me 3 years to get the correct seat for my DT3 Enduro! Good luck with the restoration.

@@alistairshaw3206 Bit of an update :-) The FZR is now in a million bits and have started buying all the bits i need, which is alot...The bodgery on this bike is epic, and.. because it had fibreglass fairings all the important stuff that is screwed to the inside, like the ducts and the plastic infills that go between the fairing and frame were missing :-( managed to find most of the stuff, in varying condition on ebay, but the price.... :-( Just getting the alloy bits vapour blasted, and the steel subframe and engine frame rails sandblasted and powder coated along with the wheels. Still no nose cone tho. Have decided to join FB just for the FZR and GSX-R groups, so maybe someone on they can help. Hows your one going?

@@uhtred7860 My first bought 1000 was full of bodges, the wiring was melted due to 100w bulbs in both headlights! They had cracked the glass too! It had the worst Kenny Roberts paint job ever. It's still in bits. My other 1000 is a rolling chassis with rebuilt suspension and brakes, I'm a coach tour driver and am too busy at the moment, so it's on hold. The engine was badly painted, I need to respray it and check the valve clearances. There was a black nose cone on Ebay, but they wanted £200 for it. I need to clear out my shed before I put the Genesis in to finish it during the winter, when I'm not so busy.

Ian Glennon I know, I was astonished at how clean the carbs were. the bike was genuinely untouched since 2003. I picked up an FZ750 last year, it was only off the road for 2 years and was a total different story, the carbs were so full of crap it caused no end of trouble, not to mention a really rusty tank. Something this FZR miraculously doesn’t have either.

Especially on downdraft ones like that. You can pour a bit of gas in like on a car. Even some quick start but I don't like that stuff personally. Seen some blown up engines before from loading up on that stuff then suddenly a spark and boom!!

@@conradpaul6100 Sounds like a coil issue, the coils fire 2 cylinders each, one coil fires cylinder 1 & 4 and the other 2 & 3, I would get that coil tested and/or make sure all the connections are good.

Lack of proper preparation including fuel system and electrical system . Sure way to damage the starter motor . My FZR 250 3LN1 ( my little lady ) would never go into such disrepair . Mine was overhauled before use and twice a year does track days . My 3LN1 looks magnificent royal blue and gold and is LOVED . The 1000 in this video seens to have carburettor problems , a bit rough and likely would drop out at higher rpm and not get to the 11k limiter .

For sure. Not meant to run continuously. Big trucks won't let you keep cranking like that. Mine kills the circuit if it gets too hot. Must be a sensor in there

Why ruin the starter ? You go through the bike first then once you know everything is done you hit the starter button and it starts ! If you was caught doing that in the bike shop i worked in you was kicking stones up the road !
@kevinchalmers83614 жыл бұрын
Steve Lamperta the bike had fresh oil in before attempting to start. I’m no mechanic, just something I am interested in, kinda learnt about some things at the same time and it worked. Nothing broke. Lucky I don’t, or have any intention of working in a bike shop then! That’s not my trade. Bikes are just a hobby on the side for me.
