Thank you for another grand reaction to my favourite singer and for posting a link to both the original song. If you considered posting a link to Angelina's Official KZbin channel as well, that would be wonderful. If every Reactor did the same, my blood pressure would be considerably lower:-)Here is the link: Angelina Jordan Official KZbin: kzbin.info/door/1Pwa4nFvIPbtYVLcBGDpjA There are so many things I get from this performance. (1) The realisation that at the age of 10 Angelina has shed all childishness from her voice. (2) A feeling that the placement of the spotlight at the beginning of her performance was deliberate. If it was, then, to my mind, it was a brilliant move. (3) The fact that Angelina arranged this song and that the band kept out of the way and let her voice be the focus. (4) The incredible low note she sang for the word "good" at the beginning and end of the performance. (5) That wonderful crescendo at the end. (6) The was Angelina used her left arm and hand throughout the performance (7) The way she changed the microphone from her right to left and so that she could flip her hair back with her right hand. (8) The cheeky smile she gave to the cameraman when she realised he had focused on her at about 2.09 in your reaction video. (9) The almost instantaneous switch from "performance" mode to that of a young child who,curseyed and gave a sweet smile to the audience as an acknowledgement of their applause. Others have commented that the performance by Nina Simone should be considered the "gold" standard for this song. Until recently, I had never watched her performance, but have now done so. They just cannot be compared, for Angelina's arrangement is totally different

So nice that you look at these performances from a theatrical point of view. She is very humble and shy, but somehow makes a lot of people say, including me (as an amateur classical singer and actor), that she is a great storyteller and would probably be a very convincing actress! This connection to her "inner world" helps a lot oviously! She is not so much "in your face", but sure knows how to share an image or an emotion! A bit in a mysterious way. And than this insane warm voice ... What a talent!

Sir Clown Spirit, thank you for your insightful reaction. I'm glad you pointed out some mannerisms that only a few reactors noted... Giving a smile to the camera also indicates she's aware of everything around her, but not losing her focus on the instrumentation, what vocal ornaments she's choosing to use.. her hand, very expressive, similar to, let's say Hawaiian dancing or ballet, I think she's accompanying her own voice... Powerful vocal strength, accompanied by that genius brain is the perfect marriage of this performance!! You're on point in seeing through this lovely Young Lady... Very rare .... Like our Barefoot Princess... She knows excellence is in the details... Just like YOU!! As for those little critiques, it just comes with the territory of doing these reactions and not reflective of all the fans as a group... Oh, Barnaby, thanks so much for your great analysis of what Angelina was doing to make all of us swoon at the end of the song. And I, too, loved that half smile she gave to the camera as it circled around her. You pointed out so many particulars during her performance but her voice from the very first note to the very last note absolutely captivated us. She did this at 10 years old. She was recognized in the industry as a prodigy with a wonderful voice and everyone believed she would turn into something fantastic when she got older. Maybe,18; or 20, or 25, or 30, etc., BUT NOT AT 10! She stepped it up a notch when she hit 10 and there is a handful of classic songs she recorded which are literally off the charts they are that good. Quincy Jones, David Foster, Disney, AGT, all wanted to sign her but her family said no. They wanted her to finish her education and have some sort of a normal life for a young person. She's 16 and still hasn't been officially marketed to the world yet in spite of the fact she did sign up with a giant in the industry, Republic Records. Per the family desire, they agreed to slow walk it until the family takes the wraps off of her. They know what they have and will not rush into anything. And, she will treated as someone very special and not be converted into a money machine working a crazy schedule. Anyway, you know Teddy is going to sneak over to your set up and watch this :):):)

I have always felt like Angelina is able to gently take our hand and invite us on the musical journey she takes every time she performs. I've also always cherished the priceless moments when the music is done and she quietly comes out of her "music mode", again becoming just an unassuming 10-year old, with a shy smile and a little bow or curtsy (or a wave "bye" in her early videos).

This is a typical Angelina Song, she delivers always Goodness and Happiness with the Audience. The Audience send her the Energy for this Connection to a higher level. Therefore she is so comfortable on Stage and she needs this and long for it. After the long quarantine period she is back very soon with a lot of concerts this year. As she sang...life is like a River flows with the Freedom we need for Feeling Good 👍🙏❣️💃 A wonderful deepminding reaction. Wow, I really enjoyed listening to your interpretation of this Masterpiece performance. Your insights were spot on & only your 2nd video. It took me years of watching her to come to many of the same conclusions. Yes, she conducts with her mic-free hand (usually her left) & yes, she goes to another world where she closes her eyes much of the time. Sometimes her eyes roll back in her head, but when she finishes she instantaneously comes back to being a kid again. It's amazing to see.

I’ve lost count of how many reactions to this perform I’ve watched and I want to thank you for bringing things to my attention that I, nor any other reactors, hadn’t noticed before..thank you 🙏 The fact that you’re a professional performer and performance coach allows you to see things from a unique perspective. Re the eyes flickering, I think she pretty much goes into a musical trance which is pretty much the altered state you referred to..indeed she has said herself that when she sings she goes to a magical place, a place full of love and light (words to that effect)..she says she prefers to be on stage performing than anything else..actually she is so humble that she can come across as being slightly uncomfortable when being interviewed. Wish I could give you ten likes !

Thanks Barnaby for your beautiful and different approach to this great Angelina performance. Her interpretation is absolutely personal, she always manages to instill an incredible emotional capacity in her voice and her jazzy inflection is absolutely unique, in a particular way because it was developed by a 10-year-old girl. In effect, as you also detect, one of the major attractive of her presence on the stage, ever, is the extremely simplicity of her musical approach, only her voice, her body, her soul, all the rest (the single musician or an entire band) is only the it's only the artistic frame to her incredible musical essence. If you're interested, to understand how this little girl works on developing her song idea, check out this rehearsal recording of this song. You may think it's impossible for a little girl, but this is Angelina, who at 8 (2 years before!) Is already working out her arrangement of "Feeling Good", during a backstage and there are also other similar videos from those years. The covers' arrangements she chooses to do are always hers, even if they may seem unreal and the way she experiences the song, even with her body reactions is really an indication of how much a musical creature she is. 💛 🧡 ❤️ kzbin.info/www/bejne/pILFqn6Vm9d5n9k

Great artists are able to create epic performances as circumstances demand. This performance should be a reminder to all of us that "age" is just a number when a natural perfection guides your path. We won't see the likes of her again in our lifetime and we should feel blessed to be a witness to her emergence. I believe that there is more than talent at work here and it leaves us fascinated because we can't quite understand it. Below, is what Angelina is feeling in her own words when she was 12. Then, an adult, explains a very similar experience. It is exactly what you discerned - they (both) enter an altered state of consciousness. During an interview, the host of a Norwegian TV talk show asked Angelina if she gets nervous before performing on stage. This was Angelina’s response: “When I sing, I go to another world. The world is endless. It's like, full of happiness. I love it. It's amazing. And when I am on stage, I don't want to go [leave the stage]. [laughing]. I just want to be on stage" A snippet of Skaylan’s interview of Angelina Jordan (age 12) on Norwegian TV - November 2018 The late great French playwright and author Eugene Ionesco described his similar periods of enlightenment in the following way: “There are times when another “me” comes forward (Many videos show Angelina transforming from the actions of an age appropriate very shy girl, into the persona needed to effectively convey the feeling of a song) and presents a world which is unbounded. It is infinity itself (Angelina describes this as going to another world and that this world is “endless”). During those periods when my soul takes over, I simply witness myself effortlessly performing all my tasks” (Angelina’s singing is most often described as effortless) while I sit back in a sea of joy” (Angelina describes it as going to another world and that world is amazing and “full of happiness”) Maybe not to the level of ionesco, but we all have had moments of clarity when our internal “chatter” ceases and then somehow, everything seems so easy and simple. When Angelina goes on stage (and at other times too), it’s hard to miss her transformation. However, Angelina seems to be able to (at will) acquire a higher level of Being. If you will notice, this goes beyond her ability to sing a song. Angelina becomes what is needed at that moment - making her supremely confident and leaving us with the sense that whatever she does; it is the right thing. And then she goes back into Angelina Jordan Astar mode and does the things that are typical of a person of her age. .
@johndoe-gt6gp2 жыл бұрын
It’s interesting you chose the word transcendent state in describing what happens when she closes her eyes. That’s exactly what I thought based on what Angelina has said in a couple of interviews. She said she loves to close her eyes because she goes to an infinite world filled with love and happiness and that she loves it. It sounds like it is something beyond a mere flow state, something far more meaningful to her. Drawing from the eastern religious traditions it almost sounds like a type of samadhi state that she can tap into at will. It’s quite phenomenal really. And she does it on every song.

Yes I have thought about it a lot. Angelina has some abilities we "normal" don't have. I even considered the impact of being a prodigy, maybe a savant without the negative consequences.

Your perspective is interesting and insightful. Thank you. I really like how you point out things that are not specific just to Angelinas' voice. Even though she is very young, she is extremely experienced, which throws a lot of people off. The real question is how does someone so young have such an incredible drive. Angelinas' drive and dedication is a pleasure to witness. Angelinas' artistry is beautiful and it encompasses not just her voice, but her mastery of the entire performance.

Angelina always uses silence as much as sound. She also holds notes longer at the end of each line than most artists. She gives each note time to have its say in the telling of the story.

I love the way you appreciate the subtleties. She says she'd rather sing than talk, her jazz background and empathy help her feel the song and deliver it as her own. She can adapt her voice to fit any style or genre, she's the girl with a thousand voices. Brilliant insights into this performance! With only your 2nd viewing of Angelina you were able to pick up so much about the way she uses not only her voice but her demeanor while performing. I have seen all of her performance videos many times and I've always been amazed at how she is able to make that connection with the listener. She usually has her eyes closed for much of the time during a delivery. Some have said that's a downfall, that she should look directly into the camera and I disagree. She is feeling every note and when she rolls her eyes back you know something great is about to happen. The hands gestures have fascinated me for a while. It seems to help her tell the story and to help control the tempo. I believe Angelina is at her best when the band follows her as opposed to the other way around. Like you mentioned, the spacing and pausing she uses is a jazz technique to emphasize a note or phrase. Very articulate comments and very much appreciated Barnaby! You have brought a long needed discussion about how Angelina is to own the stage without the need to be over the top like so many of today's so called "stars". "MY FUNNY VALENTINE" at just turned 10 just sitting in a chair at home with no mic in hand but her voice, hand movements, mouth contortions and vocal inflections while singing this difficult song beautifully gets me in the "feels" like no other AJ performance. It's genius, imo. Here's the link: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qYuVZntqlpeahqs Thank you again for a superb review!! Take care

Sir, my deepest, honest admiration. Most people don´t know, or forgot Angelina studied since age 4 at the Oslo Academy for Music and Performing Art. When she was 12 yo, the teachers there told her, there were nothing, they could teach her anymore. She did not only study every music genre, she also studied performing arts. You always can tell, with her little gestures and movement, that is not by chance. Thank you for your expertise sir.

I'm sure you'd appreciate Angelina's TV interview from 2018 (also referenced by Stephen Hamann, below), found here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aXm4go18iLV1hLM. Angelina describes the "special place" she goes when she sings, but it's difficult (if not impossible) for her to explain. Your observations about this video should also be considered in the context of a 10 year old girl performing in front of a live studio audience plus many more on live TV: she's not only comfortable in that moment and space, she instinctively connects with her audience (especially with the camera at about the two-minute mark). Many people will NEVER understand how to do this, yet it comes so naturally to Angelina. Great reaction!

Wow you are spot on, you noticed the deeper level here. Shamanic, spiritual the voice, Galgaldr, Seider. Also you picked up on the focus eye roll back flutter or eyes closed. Angelina says straight out when she sings she goes to a beautiful place inside, another world. And IMO, not to get weird for most normal people, but i believe she does channel the spirit of song and the spirit of who she tributes and covers. You feel it when she covers Micheal Jackson's Heal the World (Live) And you picked up on hand conducting hand gestures like elvis had in his own style.

Fascinating reaction and analysis. One reactor has correctly stated that Angelina kills every song while standing in a spot. There have been a few performance coaches who have given their thoughts and all, except one (that I have seen), have given Angelina high marks for performance. I along with other angels (fans), have been suggesting reaction channels verbally encourage viewers to watch the original video (thanks for providing a link to it in your description) and to subscribe to her two KZbin channels, Official and Cover Channel. These simple steps should be done for each aspiring artist you feature.

First time on your channel, but I’m amazed at how much you understood and could explain subtleties that I’ve never fully appreciated before. I’ve listened to this performance over 100 times including reactors, and this is truly one of the best. Two songs down and 160+ to the bottom of the rabbit hole, and you’ve gained another subscriber.

I feel she is also happy with how well it turned out for the audience. I’ve seen glances of disappointment when she felt herself, or other musicians was not up to par in a performance. Remarkable that a 10 year old have built up such a library in the inner world to go and let the body find this perfect execution.

Thank you for your beautiful reaction, this impressive feeling for rhythm / negative space was put into her cradle. She searched/listened in KZbin for music she enjoyed most from a very young age and is mainly self taught, influenced by the musical tastes of her grandma Mery Zamani, who is a renowned Iranian contemporary writer, poet & painter .

Great comments , here is an interview where Angelina explains exactly what you were talking about with her closing her eyes or flickering them as you say, She goes into own world of peace and tranquility for brief moments when performing . Here is the link to that interview with the TV host Skavlan prior to her performing her original song 'Shield ; kzbin.info/www/bejne/aXm4go18iLV1hLM , well worth watching !! P.S. , Angelina's hand movements and gestures are like a ballet telling the story of the song along with her voice and yes it seems she is conducting the whole band as well, she quite the performing artist.

Great analysis. I agree that she is in control of the band as well as her own performance. You can tell that the song is well arranged, and the musicians are professional but with a large group of players you need something to bring them into synch. The one thing I noticed from the first time I heard this performance was how all the musicians were so tuned into her performance. There are a lot of moving pieces in a performance like this and often for a group of this size performing live there might even be a conductor. But there isn't one here. So to some extent the band has to follow the singer but there is also a feeling that she is "driving" the band and giving them input that keeps them all not only in synch but drives them to give a very focused and powerful performance. It's like this little girl is driving this big powerful musical group and doing it with the slightest movements of her hand. If you ask any professional live performer who works in this situations I think they would see what she did here and be in awe that such a young person could pull it off.

Okay, you gave us a lot to unpack with this reaction and if I may, I'd like to discuss some of your observations. First, Angelina's "costume". It's not a costume at all with any particular significance. As a young girl, she almost always performed in a simple white dress. Age appropriate, and at the same time, something which didn't draw attention to herself in terms of her appearance. Angelina, as with most Norwegians, is very humble and low key. One could almost say she is shy and a bit introverted. It's simply a relatively plain white dress. Next, NO Angelina did not direct the show. This was a benefit which she participated in on a live broadcast on TV2 in Norway. The television director was in charge of the lighting, camera angles, cuts between cameras during the performance, just as in any other live television broadcast. Angelina knew where her "mark" was on stage, took her mark, and delivered her wonderful performance. Insofar as seeing anything of spiritual significance within any of this, I leave that up to the individual and how they experience her performances of any of her recordings. You are quite accurate about Angelina's ability to use "negative space" as I've heard other musicians and vocal coaches remark in their reactions. Highly unusual for a youngster to not rush through a performance of any kind, Angelina seemed to have an innate ability to understand the need for space within melodies and lyrics in order to give them the gravitas they deserved. An amazing understanding especially in one so young! You are also spot on when you noticed her eyes flickering or rolling up. In interviews, she has stated that when she sings she goes to another place which is limitless and beautiful and wonderful. Make of that also what you will. She has also been asked on a few occasions about whether or not she gets nervous when she goes out onto stage to sing. Her simple answer is "no". This is clearly not arrogance on her part, as I mentioned, she is sincerely quite humble. She is simply going out to do what she wants to do and loves to do, which is to sing for the world. You also were right in your observation that Angelina, even with her going to another place with part of herself, is absolutely present with her audience, and connects with them. Whether it is in a smaller venue or event, or in front of 40,000 in Seoul Korea, she is right there with them to give them her artistry. Now, as to her "free hand" or in the case where she uses a mike stand, both of her "free hands", no, she's not directing anything. The professional musicians that she works with have a director of their own and yes, with Angelina worked out the arrangement and rehearsed the performance a number of times prior to the show. They know exactly what they are to do, when and how, and Angelina simply sings. Think of her movements in much the same way as Joe Cocker. When he sang, it would appear that he was having a seizure. He wasn't obviously, he simply let the music flow over and through him, and he went with it. Angelina's movements are fairly unconscious and instinctive, and as long as they don't interfere with her singing in a healthy manner, it's just another way that she performs any given song at any given time. I've even seen her perform without really doing any of these motions very much at all. Thank you for your time, and your reaction! Be well!

Wonderful reaction and great comments Barnaby. Your mention of "quiet space" in the beginning is referred to as "dead space" by vocal coaches and refer to Angelina as a master of this skill very much a product of her Jazz mastery. You also refer to the eye movements from Angelina...you shall notice at times in her performances her eyes will actually roll back as she is singing and it indicative of what she refers to as "that beautiful place" she goes to when performing and she is so immersed in her craft....and all this at this young age. Angelina is already an Elite Master Class vocalist and the scary part for the rest of the music industry is she continues to get better and better. Enjoyed this very much and have subbed your channel. Continue on Barnaby. BTW, do not worry about pauses to comment, it is a reaction after all and don't want to see you get copyright strikes from YT, and much appreciation for posting links to Angelina's music and her YT channels as well. :))

Your thoughts on her hand movements here are interesting. I've always thought of her hand movements in general (not just in this performance) purely in terms of connecting to the feeling of what she's singing. She sometimes gestures quite a bit even when she's singing alone, over an instrumental track (and sometimes less so - and sometimes more so and sometimes less in live performances). A lot of her gestures seem to be the kinds of things that someone would do in spoken conversation (e.g., hand-to-heart, open-palms, grasping, pointing, and pinching gestures, etc.), which makes me think she's doing it bascially for the side-effect it has on the sound of her vocals - i.e., by turning her singing into more of a "conversational" act, that might make her vocals sound more "genuine", or whatever. OTOH, a lot of her gestures in this particular performance seem to be of the "sound shaping" variety, so to speak (e.g., her hand rising as the pitch rises, or "flipping open" as she sings a vocal "flip"). These, too, seem to me to be largely "for her own benefit", as it were. But the idea that some of it may be "for the benefit of others" is an interesting one…

It's uncertain if the lighting was intentional or if the 'hair light' (used to backlight a performer's hair) had gone awry given Angelina's diminutive size.
@1Piegus2 жыл бұрын
I think it was technically mistake that they couldn't fix it in time since it was life performance - eather the camera, lighting or the x on the stage was in the wrong spot. Technical name for the back light is also called - silhouette.

Greatsound to life with her Republic Records debut. The breadth of Angelina’s soulful and deep alto vocal delivery showcases a rare class of musical aptitude that you would attribute to an old soul, and legendary talent, well beyond her years. “I feel like I’ve lived many years more than my age. I feel like music found me. I want people to get connected to my music and my lyrics and to share something special with the love I have for music." Angelina went from belting out Whitney Houston’s “I Will Always Love You” to immersing herself in jazz at five-years-old. She discovered Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra, and Louis Armstrong by combing jazz playlists across KZbin. At eight-years-old, she won Norway’s Got Talent with a viral rendition of Billie Holiday’s “Gloomy Sunday.” Labels and producers feverishly sought her out, but she already possessed a clear picture of what her path would be. Taking her time, she opted to carefully hone her voice through countless hours of practice, gigs, and writing. “It was really great, but I knew I wanted something bigger,” she admits. “I didn’t want to jump into it until I felt I was ready.” She got “ready” through a series of historic performances. She graced the stage of the 2014 Nobel Peace Prize Ceremony and delivered an emotionally charged rendition of “What A Wonderful World.” A year later, she wowed an audience at Brilliant Minds in Stockholm. Touching down in Seoul during 2017, she joined a powerhouse bill alongside PSY and Norah Jones in front of 40,000 people at Muse In City Festival. Quincy Jones personally invited her to perform at his 85th birthday at London’s O2 Arena. Every time she took the stage, she was notably barefoot, which remains one of her signatures thus far. “A long time ago, I was traveling with my family, and I met a young homeless girl with no shoes,” she recalls. “She was barefoot, so I gave her my shoes because I really wanted to help her. Today, I sing barefoot as a reminder of all the kids in the world who need help and support.” Along the way, GRAMMY® Award-winning production duo Stargate [Beyoncé, Sam Smith, Rihanna] reached out, and they initiated a fervent creative partnership together. She continued to write lyrics, compose on piano and guitar, and record. Catching the attention of Republic Records, she inked a deal with the label in 2020. Now, she formally introduces herself on the single “Million Miles.” With lyrics exclusively penned by Angelina, her robust delivery sails over sparse piano on the verses as the track builds towards a sweeping refrain, “We’re a million miles apart. It’s pulling my heart." “ lina

Beware of wolves in sheep's clothing, they may say they are a super fan , even if they repeat it 1000 times ,take it with a pinch of salt. they are extremely transparent ,never talking about the performance , just being extremely negative about true fans ( angels) they have the nerve to accuse fans of many things while also being rude and offensive and at the same being extremely negative and pedantic about fans comments. Don't give them the time of day they are obsessed with being negative, pedantic, offensive, who crave attention don't feed them.

This video? It's from 2016 when Angelina was 10. "I Put A Spell On You" was recorded "around her 9th birthday" (according to her mother who wanted to shield Angelina from too much publicity in a period where her grades in school was beginning to suffer from all the concerts/activities, so she postponed the publishing of the recording with over a year).

I don't think you need to play the whole thing through without pausing. That will definitely cause problems in the future with some other reactions to her (e.g., her performances on _Got Talent_ shows and her music videos done under the auspices of Republic Records). If people want to hear the whole thing uninterrupted, they can go watch the original video (and you can remind them of that at the beginning of each video). We are supposed to be here for _your_ reaction(s), so as long as you're not pausing every five words,😉 it should be fine.
