@jonesy21113 жыл бұрын
@@ZAOUWV The Clash were never really authentic and Joe Strummer comes from a highly connected family (diplomats etc) and they like so many artists have been overrated, hyped and guilty of hyperbole- hypocrisy. The only member who was an actual musician was Mick Jones and they fired him. Don't get me wrong I like me some Clash but compared to the Stranglers they aren't even close. But the industry and media manipulators have always put them up to be so great when they were mediocre at best and a good example of overrated
@jonesy21113 жыл бұрын
@@princeofcupspoc9073 Nothing and I completely ignored them for years until I listened to a post Hugh album - Coup de Grace and was pleasantly surprised at how good it is abd from then on realized they are still one of the best and most enduring bands ever.

Not strictly punk because when they first emerged, they were called 'The Doors copiers' and if you listen to Dave Greenfield's synthesizer, it's very similar to Ray Manzarek's style of play.
@littleghostfilms30124 жыл бұрын
These guys took the sound of the Doors down to the streets and let it marinate in the nocturnal smell of pubs, alleys, pavement princesses, an experimental year on heroin and lots of physical 'interactions' with the general public. To paraphrase Jean-Jacques it's a wonder they all survived. Music that stands the test of time!!

MOST OF YOU KNOW THE STRANGLERS, RIGHT? BUT FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO DON'T... They initially formed way back in 1974 and had their first live gig in December of that year. By May 1975 they were looking for a keyboard player and found Dave Greenfield. Thus the classic quartet was formed and gave this punky band it's unusual sound. How many punk bands back then had an organ? One of the first British bands to release a record, Stranglers burst on the scene on January 28, 1977 with the single (Get A) Grip (On Yourself) bw London Lady. On April 16, 1977 Stranglers released their debut LP, Rattus Norvegicus, and the song Hanging Around was included on that album. This is an excellent video of the band in the studio in all their youthful glory playing Hanging Around.

I like how the keyboard is high in the mix. Jet trained as a jazz musician, John as a classical guitarist, Dave’s skill obviously speaks for itself and Hugh’s vocals were simply wonderful. Without Hugh, the band was able to carry on because of the raw talent that they had. I lost interest after Hugh left because it simply wasn’t the same without him. I would have felt this way had it have been Jet that had left. For me, the magic was the four of them. I can’t help how I feel 🫶
