It's so refreshing to see the greats teach. It's just so much more musical. Modern intellectual methods are great but it's more like an archeologist analyzing something from the past which, won't put you in the mindset of how these guys originally did it.

Many years ago my music teacher gave me an assortment of cassettes taken from a clinic on creativity by Barney Kessel. At one point Mr. Kessel talks for a while on visualising a cup of coffee. I was too young to understand the object of the exercise, too impatient to just get down and play, to benefit much from the talk, but I wish I still had those tapes. Because today I realize that creativity and having the chops to express that creation, as being the most important aspect of any musical endeavour.

mosrite60 when I was in my late teens in the late 80's everything was Hot Licks videos lol. We rented them from the local music store. But the people that get really good on guitar seem to have the ability to go beyond what they're taught. They work things out and say "hmm if I can do this, I can also do this and this and this." I'd be like ok I learned this, show me something else lol. I only ever got half as good as my teacher. I'm 50 now and still learning. But these kid prodigies today are nuts. But anyway, I always had the ear to make music enjoyable. It was never drudgery.
@mosrite604 жыл бұрын
@@luvpants2012 Yes, all good players have the natural talent with them. I know guys who attended GIT in LA and studied with the best, but somehow weren't better than the farm boys who had talent. For sure the present instructors teach how to sight read better. I read about one dude from UK who attended GIT for 2 years. But sadly on return he found that he couldn't play with other good jazz guys because many played by ear only. He was lost as needed the sheet music. ! But things much different now. Young kids 14 years can listen to James Burton licks and pickup quickly. Different world out there. Certainly. Thx.
