It’s not history: Bury were thrown out for similar v Chester in 2006, and two years later Droylsden were also removed for fielding an ineligible player v Chesterfield. Rather mysteriously though, there are examples of games being ordered to be replayed: Chesterfield played an ineligible player v Stockport County in 2020, but were not removed from the competition, and the tie was ordered to be replayed (County won). There may be others… It’s inconsistencies like this that cause ordinary fans to lose faith with the people who run football.

@@denzel9086 sorry to interject and you definitely ask a fair question, but I think something which is concerning is that there is no logical explanation as to why it hasn’t been concluded yet. Huge investigations involving serious crime and fraud involving thousands of people e.t.c can be completed more quickly than this one is taking to be completed. Again obviously it’s correct to say we do simply have to wait for the conclusion of the investigation, but it is very interesting to me as an observer that it is taking an unfathomably long time that I can’t possibly think of an explanation for.

THe FA said "In particular, the board noted that the club had sought the assistance of the Football Association in securing the return of the international clearance prior to the start of this season, and the club had been able to include the player on team sheets for Premier League Two matches [under Premier League rules] and one Leasing Trophy match, which resulted in the breach not being identified until the club reported the issue to the EFL and Premier League following the MK Dons match"

I think Barnsley would rather just get knocked out the cup now than travel down to Sussex again to have another kick about, to then travel down to south London for another kick about, to then probably draw a championship side and get knocked out in round 3. They need to focus on the league. Also, clubs should be more thorough with making sure they’re only fielding registered players. If non-league clubs can put the time in to scour through a clubs contracts after a tie, then EFL clubs can scour through their own contracts beforehand and get a bit more organised don't you think?
