i think baroque is a true anomaly in video games, wholly unique concept for the time, truly weird art style, completely esoteric design decisions, but in no way would I say it's """bad""", just a super interesting game that I think deserves a little more credit

Another thing you missed is that the original Baroque for Saturn was recently ported over to Switch as "Baroque: Original Version". So, for context, modern shooter controls didn't exist when this game came out. The first game to do the twin-stick FPS movement with triggers to shoot was Alien Resurrection on the PS1 in 2000, and it was BLASTED by critics for its "weird controls". Before this, move console FPS games did what Baroque did. Movement on D-pad, strafe on triggers.

The feather parasite is actually useful to remove items that you can't remove otherwise So for example the glue wings cannot be unequipped after you already equipped and considering how sometimes you get unknown items you cannot find out what they are until you use them they can be really good for this I wasn't aware the VN was translated, I'm gonna read that but in addition to the games/ports they also ported the ps1 version of the game to Switch, japan only of course, alongside some other games from STING like Knights in the Fucking Nightmare, those assholes. Anyways there's also a manga that covers the story of the game in a much more structured way than the games and it's the way I'd recommend to experience the story if one is not willing to deal with the game's more... eccentric aspects

Baroque is really fantastic, one of the greatest horror videogames wver made. I have the Sega Saturn version, and it’s PSX cousin is identical, plus a few changes like the character who stores your items. This new PlayStation translation is amazing and I’m glad to see this game in English, although the plot is incomprehensible in any language. You just enjoy this game for its spooky atmosphere and mood. Oh, Saturn Baroque uses the analog controller and it’s very nice.

It was a lucky break I came across this video! I've played plenty of the King's Field and Shadow Tower games, and this really feels like an indie version of them. I saw someone else recommend you those games, and I second them! They have crazy great atmosphere and play extremely similar to Baroque, but without the roguelike elements. Honestly, if you're looking for the best place to start between King's Field and Shadow Tower, I highly recommend King's Field IV first. It's separated from the rest of the series story-wise, and is an amazing experience. But sorry for dragging on- Highly appreciate the showcase/review! I like that that the first character you come upon is thing thing. The game likes to make you suffer, it does this with its art and cyclical mechanics. The loop of the game is to, at times, just be punished. To die and start over. He likes being beaten up "a little too much"; Collecting items. The player, in this regard, is the exact same. In order to heal - you have to be damaged.

I used to stream the Wii remake of this game, and at one point, I had some motivation to try and learn Japanes to download and play this version on my Nintendo Switch because I think the sound track is superior and some things I really wanted to experience. The hopping things are called Glue, on the PS2/Wii version, it is a lot easier to step on them, but you don't get the experience or items from defeating them. The Bulgars are actually female, and they hold "The Empress" idea sephirah (the little pearls you pick up, also "Baroque" in this context is less "flawed" and more "distorted", since it is a distorted world created by The Blaze caused by [SPOILER]. The "phallic unicycler" is called Seventeen, and he drops "The Star" idea sephirah, which is the 17th arcana in the tarot deck. I'll also address here you that the "moon" monsters drop exactly what their name implies. All of the monsters in this game are associated with tarot cards, the glue being somewhat of an exception in a direct sense because they more or less are "the glue that binds the cards". In the PS2 and Wii versions, there is a Laughing Box you can pick up that attracts enemies to your position. On the Wii version, you will hear the laugh come out of your Wii remote. I do wonder why they went with this kind of translation when the PS2/Wii games have a decent enough translation on the systems and stuff. Maybe the story had some translation issues, but items and enemies seemed fine.
