A few years ago I came up with a similar idea myself. The walking the plank bit was basically a finally balance length of plywood. I used peanut butter at the appropriate end of the plank which stays in place. Once the mouse falls in the plank returns to the correct position because of it's own weight.

I think the design could be improved by making it longer and putting the sensor a couple of inches before the end. Then you could stick some peanut butter and seeds to the end, and the rat would trip the sensor before it could eat the bait, so that the bait is still there to catch another rat. Also what's the point of having it tapered towards the end? Surely the rat would feel safer and hence more likely to walk on the plank if it is wider.

What would you do with a barrel full of angry rats in the morning? Also, the bait disappears after each catch. How would you catch more than one rat? There needs to be a platform that fits into the barrel with a very slippery funnel in the center right beneath the plank so that no previously-caught rat is visible to a new arrival, and also to prevent them jumping out.

With rats due to their size the bucket diameter and height needs to be much larger. More like a drum. I miss bigger versions of those traps on this channel. You can't cach rats effectively with small versions designed for mouse. The plank need to be long almost to the second side of the drum. You put the plank on top of the drum and put second drum upside down on top of it. At the beginning of the plank you install small neodymium magnet and a piece of metal. This way plank is stable under load up to certain point. This allow the mouse or rat to get deeper into the trap. You put peanut butter 4-5 inches above plank level on opposite site of entrance (entrance hole in the top drum). Smallest and lightest mouses will need to go to the end of plank and rise its body to reach the peanut. So their centre of gravity will by furthest from entrance thus giving maximum momentum. At that stage the force of magnet should be compromised and the plank should drop down. By moving the magnet between entrance and the hinge of plank you adjust the needed force to trip it. I would love you Shawn to made it and test yourself. Just adjust magnet or magnets with your smallest pupils :) Big rats will not go so deep into the trap but will not feel that something is wobbling so it will be more effective against them.

Shawn, I have seen a number of KZbin videos where the user makes up a mixture of flour, sugar and either baking soda or plaster of Paris as a safe "poison' claiming the baking soda or plaster does nasty things to the mouse/rat digestive system. Maybe you could test this out?

I used a 5 gal. bucket that worked just fine. Just a little dog food in the bucket and a stick to climb up . The mice jump in eat the food then can't jump back out.

How deep of water do you need to drown them, especially if you get many in one night. Wish you showed how you attached the ramp too. Getting ready to set mine up.

I kinda got the impression your crash test rat at 0:30 don't want to be a crash test rat no more. Kinda felt sorry for the little guy right then 😆

Put a block of foam rubber in the bottom so the rat doesn't have a firm surface to just from.

This thing needs a lid, similar to the flip&slide. 1st the bait wont fall off 2nd the rants cant escape

It appears maybe it needs a bit more area past the sensor to hold bait so when the rat goes to eat bait past the sensor his head would trip the sensor. No real place for much bait past the sensor.

What is an effective way to catch mice that are Inbetween floors. I don’t know the word but like In the space between 2 Rooms on top of each other? Does something like the slip and slide on the upper room work? My issue is that the mices found a wasp nest in those in between space and the eat now from it and I’m worried they gonna explode in numbers soon. I live in a region where mice transmit a lethal illness so I’d like to get rid of them asap..
