I know I'm really late, but the reason Baird recorded the kids and played their crying over the speakers was to mask their sounds. You can't really get a bunch of kids to be quiet in a situation like that, so by doing this he makes it impossible for the Locust to tell where the sounds are coming from, that way the kids can escape. That's also why Dom stresses about the possibility of a Berserker, cause then the Locust could hunt the kids by smell.
