One thing never mentioned is that if someone buys an ICE car, keeps it 2 years, then trades it in, they would suffer acceptable depreciation, then use the balance to put towards buying a new ICE car. The problem now is that if they bought an EV, suffered massive depreciation, and then have to source a much larger loan or cash contribution to purchase another new one, then it is a law of diminishing returns. The EV buyers will eventually run out of cash, and as they are the only people buying them, there will be no buyers at all. The real cost of owning an EV will be beyond the reach of the vast majority of the driving public. All of the PR being broadcast is nothing more than panic measures in a desperate attempt to deceive the public, who in reality will never buy one as they cannot afford one.

Hi Barrie, no one seems to mention the high insurance costs for EV’s. I got rid of my (mis-sold) e208 after 3 months due to the crap 130 mile range and the group 27 insurance. I could not afford a high end & high range car like the Audi e-tron, Mercedes eq series or Jaguar i-pace. Yesterday, the Tesla was shown to be group 50 on Carwow. Also on Carwow, there was something like over 100 Vauxhall Corsa e’s with over £11’000 discount. I bought a petrol 3008 with group 16 insurance. I cannot afford / justify EV insurance and I’ve been driving for 40 years. I think you should do a video on insurance groups for EV’s.

Insurance costs on my Kia e-Niro were same as for the Niro hybrid and only slightly more than the Toyota Prius (2007) I sold before buying my e-Niro new in 2019. I live in France so can't comment on UK these days but from what my insurance people told me EVs are no more expensive than ICE cars here. BTW 110,000 km on the clock, zero range loss in nearly 6 years with a range a lot more than I can drive in one sitting...meanwhile I've saved at least €10,000 in fuel and servicing compared to an ICE doing 55 mpg.

Hi Barrie. My background is in the electrical industry but now retired , I remember the phase out of filament lamps and the push for compact florescent lamps and halogen . Quickly following by LED , in the early days we would be buying in high bay lights for factories at in excess of £300 pounds apiece which is getting on now for about 15 years ago . With in months even at that price we would get two or three failures out of say 20/30 units , fast forward to day and the price will be nothing like the figure . The life span will be long , because the technology has moved on even regarding LEDs , but the point is it took at least two changes at least to get were are now in that sector . So how can we possible try to square the circle with the pursuit of electric vehicles . Kind regards

Excellent point with the leaf blower. Electric is much handier for small jobs. Same with grinders, saws, and chsinsaws. But when the big jobs need doing and they're far from mains you end up with a generator running and plug in tools or petrol/diesel tools for the serious work. I'd say it's similar for cars, vans, and trucks used for work - anything involving long distance, rapid response, serious climbs, or running equipment (e.g. welders or other power hungry onsite equipment) can't be covered by a battery only vehicle.

EVs might not be ideal for short trips though. Let me explain. I have a 2003 Nissan Micra as our household runabout in Oxfordshire. It's the only car I have access to at this precise moment, because the other one is at the garage for repairs. It currently has no petrol in it, because the fuel light came on during my journey home and I couldn't be arsed stopping for petrol. Now, lets say I get a call in 5 minutes time, informing me a loved one has been rushed into hospital in Scotland, and isn't expected to live beyond tomorrow morning. I can immediately jump in my Micra, drive to the petrol station less than a mile from home, fill up and pay inside 5 minutes, and be on my way with 500 miles range. With just one more 5 minute fill up, I can be in Scotland in 8 hours this time of night, and get to spend a couple of hours with said loved one before they pass away. What would I do however, if all I had was a Tesla with 6 miles range left, and I'd forgotten to plug it in? I'd have to twiddle my thumbs for 4 hours whilst it charged enough to get me 22 miles to the nearest EV fast charger. Then spend another hour charging to 80%. Then it would take me 12 hours to get to Scotland with further charging stops, meanwhile my loved one has died. Think I'm being silly? That this would never happen? It did happen. But because my short-journey household runabout runs on petrol, I was able to be with my best friend and hold her hand before she slipped away. Still think an EV would be ideal? What about emergencies? We all have them.

Interesting. I've just put that trip into my cars sat nav starting with a 10% battery (I think that's fair as It's more convenient to plug in at home than go to a fuel station, as you attested to. funnily enough, If I return home with the car fairly low, I'll top it up straight way for reasons as you've suggested). Total trip time including charging is 8hrs and 15minutes. 2 x 22 minute charge stops. I dont' think that's too bad. It's worked that out on the basis it's currently -1c. I don't think that's too bad, tbh,

@@markburton8303 My point is Mark, people aren't all orderly and organised. I'm certainly not. I have a busy life, and I'm quite forgetful. I simply don't have time, inclination, or head space to think about the car all the time. Emergencies happen out of the blue. A car with an empty petrol tank can be refilled in 3 to 5 minutes. A flat battery in an EV can't.

Is the moral or your tale to have 2 ICE cars so you have a spare for when one breaks down? A remarkably precise set of circumstances, suspiciously similar to those used by a certain motoring journalist turned farmer to support his anti-ev stance too. Want another example that works the other way? Just over a year ago some scallywags came along to a local car park and spent a few lucrative moments relieving cars of their catalytic converters, leaving people stranded and with insurance and recovery issues to sort out. Let's hope no one wanted to be anywhere in a hurry.

I was speaking to a guy at work. A car rental company handed over an EV with only 20% charge at 6:15pm in the evening when he needed it for a trip the next day. A guy that had zero experience of EVs, of course it went wrong. If that's the best rental companies can do, FFS at least fully charge the car before handover, if they'd done that the guy at work could have done the whole 150 mile trip without even worrying about charging it. No wonder they are getting out of EVs, for now anyway. When more people have first hand experience of EVs, they will prefer to rent an EV and will be better placed to deal with a stupid rental company that hands over a car with only 40 miles of range in it. For those reasons your rental argument is irrelevant, sorry.

You could also just use a brush instead of a leaf blower. Or follow Bob Flowerdew's advice and get your petrol driven machinery serviced.

I like EV's in principle but I'm also a massive realist. Some EV's can make sense but not all. I don't have a second car but i just may buy a new or used when available Dacia Spring EV for local driving. £15k new or less for used if you want to wait 12 months.

Daughters mother in law just bought a new EV with 110 mile range; doesn't need a longer range as they use husbands ICE for that. Poses the question, what if all set for long holiday trip and hubbies car dies, the options suddenly become limited and, if , for health reasons (both are retired) a car had to be sold, would there be a resale market for a used EV with such a very limited range; I don't think it likely when BYD are offering cheap alternatives with 550 mile range.

@kevinmoffatt if your ICE car dies before a trip you'd just have to hire one same as if you only owned one car i suppose. Buy a used entry level EV which has less value to start with to keep depreciation to a minimum.

Ha ha, love the leaf blower analogy! I couldn't agree more, and had me grinning as I've just gotten a sore shoulder myself from starting one of the bloody things, but no way would i want an electric one. You are spot on as usual...

I have a 240v leave blower, and it's mental! Far more powerful than a petrol one, takes some taming. But, yeah agree about petrol things though, nothing better than tinkering with an engine 🙂

Evs so have a place on the world, but not suite everybodys needs. For example the 40% of people who have no off road parking and would have to rely on expensive public charging. Suppose its a buyers market for evs. Thiusands out there that nobody else wants while petrol and dieael cars will go up in value.

the most common factor in ANY car fire is ................... Electricity never seen a petrol or diesel tank spontaneously combust without an ignition source early vehicle fires were never recorded by classification and were only recorded as 'vehicle fire' and now they have to state what type of vehicle was attended and they are seeing a rise in recorded fires of EV fires QBE In surance did resent research and they 'reported a 46% increase in UK EV battery fires in 2023. This alarming trend has caught the attention of safety experts and industry leaders alike.' The UK fire brigades’ data paints a worrying picture. Car battery fires jumped by 33%, while bus battery fires increased by 22%.

For example the Zoe GT has a 54.75kw battery usable 52kw. It's g'teed for 100,000 miles or eight years. Mine is 42 months old, only 18,885 miles but it's still 100% battery life. They only advise you to charge to 80% as that is the fastest speed it will charge, after 80% it will take twice as long so using rapid chargers on a long journey makes sense, but at home charging at 7kw or 2kw charging to 100% makes no difference. If I'm going anywhere out off town I'll always go full up. Around town you don't need to max it. After 8 years I would expect Zoe to have only lost 5 to 10 % of its range. If that!

If EV’s are so good why are they not selling? Price? Range? High depreciation? Insurance costs? Take your pick!

'I love EV's but'.. The depreciation myth is easily busted in two ways. 1) EVs are still more expensive new than they need to be given the crash in battery prices, so a bigger percentage fall in value over 2 to 3 years is no surprise. 2) Take an EV and an ICE of the same new price and see how their depreciation compares, in most cases the EV will hold up better than the ICE. Keep going Barrie. 😊

The ICE car holds up far better than an EV, far better, thousands, also the equivelant ICE and EV the EV costs thousands more, and is then worth less than the ICE at the same age and mileage used, you need to pay more attention to my videos

EVs are superior technology and they are just getting into their stride with so many advantages over ice cars. They will be on a totally different level every five years, starting from now! How many anti EV guys still have CRT TV? or still use a Nokia 3210? Anyone? Thought so. I have recently helped a friend out driving a diesel van, getting it on my hand, while filling it up, it was on the ground and got on my shoes! Then I drove it, noisy, vibration through the seat, the floor, the steering wheel! After a day I got back in my Zoe and thought who would buy an ice car by choice!😮

Guys what's this crap about depreciation? All cars depreciate a lot!! You buy a car to use, to get as much value out of it as you can! How can something like a top spec 2 litre vauxhall Astra cost over £42000? If you buy any big french car you will lose a ton of cash, the big German cars shed £10'000's over five years! When you look at the monthly payments in an ice car and think yeah I can afford that you don't figure in the £200 a month in petrol! When in an EV it's a fraction of that! We have had free road tax for 12 years! Insurance cost is personal mine on a Zoe GT was £620 up from £420 in 2023. But from what I hear young drivers pay it's peanuts!

So why are there 34 Million Ice cars on UK roads and it's taken 10 years for EV's to get to 1.3 Million with all the incentives and shilling by 'experts' and even some nutjobs declaring war on non EV owners? It's so easy to rip apart those 'facts', because a lot of it is rubbish. I did it myself by researching with a few simple questions in my post on here!
