I went to Arnold Clark today just to kick some tyres. Well, on passing I asked the sales person about the Dacia spring. It has 140 miles of range he touted. I said joking, what about if you have the heater on? Oh, you lose around 10 percent and in winter the batteries don't work as well and you can lose around 20 percent of range! So an advertised 140 miles becomes 100 ish! Mental, absolutely mental for £15k. The chemistry is all wrong for BEVs!
@mikewhitehead50

People have to just come to terms, and stop being blown away by it. Much like a diesel with an advertised mpg of 60 won't do that in different circumstances. £15k is cheap for a new car, that also needs coming to terms with. It's cheap even for a small petrol car.

Motability is the largest leasing system in the UK . They order cars for delivery in the first month of quarter . The amounts of EV and hybrid vehicles could well be due to the discounts offered by the car companies . Unlike normal car leases the down payment varies . For Example in the first quarter after the Nissan Juke was introduced Nissan put it on the Motabilty scheme at nil deposit . It's sold conventionally so well that quickly the deposit went to £1000 , then as demand outstripped supply the took it off the scheme altogether . Big brands on the scheme can shift EVs off their Forecourts and avoid the fine by encouraging Mobility customers to choose one in a colour they have in can then put this on their EV sales target .

They need to find out WHY EV owners are selling their cars after just a few months and going back to ICE cars. When they know the reasons they can adjust the market accordingly so there is no or very little Buyers Remorse about owning an EV. Barry isn't against EV's - He is against mis-selling EV's and people deliberately lying to get people to buy something that is not compatible with their needs,

I was paying for my fuel and the topic of EV's came up. The female cashier said she was happy with her EV, she could charge at home, only did short trips to work and shopping and it was on contract lease. However she was concerned about doing longer trips and public charging wasn't cheap. At least on lease she won't be taking a hit on depreciation. If you only do short journeys, can charge at home and it's on lease an EV might be the answer.

With the merits claimed for the vehicles it would not have been necessary to hose the market with choice and P R . No one was comforted by this unless it was tax efficient and the +/- 30% premium for EVs appalled the private buyers. Well, magazine publishers have had a happy time now soon to end. We currently have three cars. Two EVs via salary sacrifice (Tesla Model 3 and Volvo C40 Recharge) and a Hyundai i10 petrol manual so that our 17 year old daughter has a car she can drive. Can’t insure young drivers on these EVs. We’ve had the Tesla 5 years and the Volvo 2 years. Having lived with these EVs I would say it’s a very mixed bag. Charging at home is cheap and easy, they require hardly any maintenance and they are quick and quiet to drive. However, they are as dull as ditchwater to drive and I get more driving pleasure from the little Hyundai. Also despite the Tesla superchargers being the best network, even the Tesla can be a right pain requiring lots of planning on long roadtrips. We drive to Europe on our holidays a lot and quite often our itinerary is dictated by the charging needs of the car, not by what the humans actually want to do. We will retire in the next 2 years and at that point the two EVs will go back to the salary sacrifice lease companies. At that point we need to buy private cars. Will we buy EVs having had so much experience of them? No. We will be replacing them with a diesel VW campervan for the road trips and small fun sports car like a Porsche Boxter. I won’t buy another EV until forced to or until the infrastructure and range of the cars mean that you no longer have to plan roadtrips around the needs of the car.

I watch both the EV sceptic and EV evangelist channels, and what I notice about the comments in the latter, is the fantastical notions these people have about the end of ICE vehicles being just round the corner. They all focus on the sales mix of EVs - 40% this and 30% that - while ignoring entirely the fact that currently BEVs make up just 4% of registered cars in the UK - and despite all the enormous effort it's taken to get to just that. Maybe they'll have a good year and get near the 28% target (unlikely imo), but what about next year and the year after? EV owners literally don't know what it is like to own an EV. As I've said before, current EV early-adopters are a highly privileged affluent minority who experience a cherry-picked, niche, best-case-scenario of EV ownership. That is not representative of what the masses will experience. The data I want the evangelists to post each month, is public charger available during core hours, and the charging cost.

Strange despite petrol/diesel sales being down it seems obvious that those drivers have not turned to an ev as the percentages don't match. No it's because cash is tight irrespective of the type of car. I also wondered if they were offloading older models of ev before the March plate change especially if those older models are being superceded so they can't register them on a 25 plate and/or they are looking at the looming road tax? I bet there are still a lot of drivers who don't follow automotive news and are still unaware of the change. January is not normally a good period for new car sales as you said. You might as well wait till March and get the latest plate. Percentages can skew the figures.

Am curious to see if EV sales for 2025 are largely over by March due to the new VED amounts coming along in April. All a bit short-sighted as it on,y puts things off for a year…. EV are a fantastic choice for the second car in the family. If you have a daily commute of less than 40 miles each way. However they just aren’t suited for households with a single car as they are unsuited for long journeys. The lack of a reliable charging network also prevents mass adoption.

Unfortunately, if the UK electorate keep voting Tory or Labour nothing will change. The current Labour government will hike vehicle tax (especially ICE's) for the next 4 years - there has to be a backlash in the not to distant future, which I expect to see Labour dispatched for a generation. Again, at that point the damage will already have been done and thousands will have lost their jobs and businesses failed.

Negatives might be mitigated if the bottom drops out of the ev market( a lot more affordable)I could charge at home(cheap to charge overnight) and my average journey time daily is 20/30 miles per day ( no need to charge at expensive public chargers). If ICE cars keep going up in price then the cost to change my present old ICE car might not be worthwhile. Any comments welcomed. 😊

I did some calculations in my head. about the Norway thing of near 100% EV sales. lets say that theres 100 car buyers. available to buy a car. and in 1 year 1 of them buys a car. the other 99 dont. and he buys an EV. thats 100% EV sales in 1 year. the following year. 99 still dont buy a car. instead sticking with the same ICE car they have owned for the last 2-3 years. and the one who bought an EV last year. trades it in for another EV. thats 100% EV sales for another year. . . . . . . And thats how "large" sales are being touted. not by actual sales in total. but by huge percentages. my own calculations. remain at 1.5% total EV ownership , worldwide. and it looks like that wont change anytime soon.

@BarrieCrampton Yes the residual values are going to be rubbish for at least the next few years as buyers target the newer models with enhanced range and charging speed. I suspect that once most of the EV's hit around 400 mile range and sub 10 minute charging then the residual values will hold up better. It's also buyer confidence, now that EV batteries are proving they have a much longer lifespan than even the manufacturers expected buyers will be more reassured when buying a second hand EV. Again that will lead to the residual values improving.
