The new 2 CV for the 21st century. This is for those short journeys in your locality perfect on our roads that are congested and with cameras waiting to make a buck. Apart from the 20 mph zones no speeding worries and cheap to charge. Citroen lead as they have done throughout their history.

Barrie! I'll put this down as one of my all-time favorite YT videos! Three reasons: 1. your review of a fun little vehicle,, 2. the opportunity to drive through British urban environment, and 3. terrific video editing. Great job, Barrie! And thanks! Absolutely love your review! I ordered my Ami last year but only had a chance to test drive it a couple of days ago and only for about 20 minutes. It was wonderful! I've read many reviews and watched many reviews on KZbin about the Ami, however everything you say in your review is the way I was thinking...it's replacing my electric moped so that I stay dry and also safer if I’m honest. I’m also approaching retirement and it was my nephew who suggested I looked at the Ami as a second car just for commuting to work. I’ve been smitten by the little car ever since. I still can’t get a straight answer from Citreon about insurance and tax for the Ami so anything you know about that would be appreciated. Your review is the first I've seen from someone in the motor trade with nothing to gain and a Range Rover owner (!) so I really value your opinion and high praise indeed for the Ami. Thanks for the no nonsense review, practical advice and tips. I’m looking forward to getting my Ami even more.

I have had an insurance quote from Compare the market and also Direct Line, its a completely separate car from my car sales related business so no “no claims bonus, but quote includes use for business purposes as i think “youtube” videos could be a grey area, and i want to make sure I have adequate cover, plus job in the motortrade and my postcode is adjacent to the cash for crash capital of the universe, £500 from DL £600 from Sergei and the rest of the Meerkats, just tried to get one on Tescos but “something went wrong” so will try again later, in my opinion the Ami has some shortfalls when compared to a car, but none apart from speed when compared to a moped/motorbike

I’m going there on Tuesday for a test drive, it will probably be that very car. I’m aiming to use for fish and chips delivery. Might be a tad chilly in winter though. Good review and I think you have hit the nail on the head. If you need to cross a continent, take a big car, or if they are still running, take a train. However, 5 minutes down the road to go to the shops, or work etc, this is a good option. As a person who does less than a 1000 miles a year in a car, I'm looking to get one of these for the odd occasion I need to keep myself out of the weather.

@@BarrieCrampton I could also mention that where I live, (Channel Islands) most of the speed limits are 20 to 25 mph tops! It's not too hard to make a case for something like this where your average journey speed is 19 mph and a lot of the roads are less than 15 feet wide!

Any car that can potentially put a smile on your face is a car worth having…. Dont know why car manufacturers dont do a three seater though with the driver in the middle, with passengers either side and set back with their legs be able to go down either side of the driver.. At least this way you don’t have to worry about left and right hand drives and surely cheaper to produce!

Gosh, an honest and sensible review. Thanks! 🙂 I love driving but can't afford it now, so I've been reduced to riding my ancient [17 year-old, £130 when new] Halfords bike for the past decade. I do 70 miles a week, every week, in all weathers, and I really hate it. (I'm ☁️based in the wet,🌧️windy, hilly⛈️ north 🌧️of ☔England. Yuk.) The Ami is certainly a neat 'sans permit' machine - and I do understand why it is the way it is - but I think it needs another 20 mph to be a true daily-drive car alternative for most people. Its simplicity is something I see as a very positive thing, though; regular EVs are absurdly over-specced, luxurious and expensive. If it's cold, I wouldn't whine about the lack of climate control, air-con, heated seats, and a heated steering wheel; I'd wear 'clothes', driving gloves, and a woolly hat. If the seat's too hard, sit on a ruddy cushion. I used to own Citroëns (first a Visa Super E, then a Visa GT), and rather liked their non-cancelling indicators because it meant thinking about what you were doing, and not just operating in a daze. And if the interior is too cheap-looking and people are terrified of being poor-shamed by their Porsche-owning chums at the golf club because the Ami uses too much plastic, they should bog off and blow sixty grand on something better. Ye gods, people today can be so pathetic...🙄 Meanwhile, Arcimoto's FUV might be a more practical EV choice for some commuters because its higher speed capability gives more flexibility route-wise; but the FUV's eye-wateringly expensive, too. Alas, the Ami is also beyond my meagre means. That's a pity, because it'd be an ideal replacement for a bicycle. At the moment I can carry about 50 lbs of groceries in panniers etc, but I've just built a small 2-wheeled tow-behind trailer to get all the weight off the bike and improve manoeuvrability. I know car drivers loathe cyclists (because I'm a motorist and a petrolhead, too), but I ride quickly - 25 mph - and behave on a bike as if I were driving behind myself in a car. So... I ride in the gutter whenever possible; I obey all road signs and laws; I give clear hand signals, I always use my mirrors; I yield to ALL cars, even when it's my right-of-way; I don't threaten rude, aggressive, distracted or texting motorists with a video camera; I smile a lot, make eye contact and wave 'thanks' even when I don't need to; I never ride on pedestrian-only pavements, and if the traffic's really bad, I'll get off and walk. (Non-British cyclists may not know that there are virtually no cycle lanes in most of our towns and cities, so bikes have to share the road with cars, buses, lorries, vans, and nutters.) I've noticed that quite a few comments on the Ami focus on its safety in collisions. That's understandable if you're used to driving a 9-ton Canyonero, but I suspect that many Ami customers will be from a cycling or moped/scooter background, and road safety from a two-wheeled perspective is a very different matter. The Ami's not a car, it's a quadricycle, so it doesn't have to meet the same safety standards as a car. So yes, it'll suffer badly in a 20 mph crash between a bus and a brick wall. If a 40-ton lorry hits you at 40 mph, you'll probably die, just as you would on a bike. But hey, we're all grown-ups. We choose to take the risks we take. And the Ami offers far more protection than a crummy cycle helmet. Frankly, I don't care about crash protection. Really? Yes, really. That attitude will shock US peeps, who are OBSESSED with personal safety matters, the absolute avoidance of all risk in every aspect of their existence, and great big juicy multi-million-dollar personal injury and compensation lawsuits, but I'm not. I'm just a cyclist. For the past umpteen years and over 50,000 miles of pedalling, this 🎵 'Fat-Bottomed Girl' has had a crash-test rating of 0.00. Yep. When a comically ample but gravitationally-challenged bosom is your front airbag, and your backside is your rear crumple zone, even the tiny Ami looks like a good place to be on a cold, wet, sleet-filled summer's day...😁

At the traffic lights you make the valid comparison between Ami and Skoda - it’s not maximum speed but average speed that counts. That’s how bicycles and E-bikes are often faster than cars in urban situations (plus the shortcuts they can take). 😃

I'll give you a tip about the radio 📻 Buy an Alexa sound bar speaker and use the WiFi hotspot in your mobile phone for Internet data. Then Alexa could be your radio, sat navigation, etc. Just place her in the cup holder 🥤 in front of the steering wheel. I have seen a number of videos about the Ami. My take on it is that it is a very good idea, but it is still a fairly new vehicle (yes, I know it was preceded by the Renault Twiggy, but that is quite dated now). I would like to see what lessons other manufacturers can take to make the idea better. Firstly, I am a fairly large person, and it does seem like a fairly small vehicle (especially if you are carrying a passenger). Probably less of an issue when I was in my late teens, and quite trim in size and weight, but the decades since then have taken their toll and I would wonder how well it would cope with the larger me. Probably one of the biggest problems everyone has mentioned about the vehicle is the large sunroof, and the greenhouse effect of that sunroof. Putting some sort of opaque cover over that glass area to reduce the heat coming into the vehicle would probably make a big difference to the comfort in the vehicle. Also, it would be nice to have a little more range (although the videos on 'Me and mon Ami' do show them taking their own extra battery along to extend range).
@BarrieCrampton
@BarrieCrampton Жыл бұрын
there have been a few fairly large people in the Citroen Ami and I have to say that there is more room than you would think, especially as the passenger seat is set back a little, I actually think the seat is pretty comfortable too, there are a few aftermarket accessories available for the Ami pan roof one is a roller blind and the other is a complete panel which slides forward

Hi Barrie. Very useful and realistic review of The Ami unlike some of the novelty stuff on this vehicle on KZbin. Coincidentally I recognised your route and know your garage well as I live 5 minutes from it…I often cast a glance at the quality stock of Range Rovers and other vehicles on the forecourt. I too test drove the Ami at Just Citroen Preston and have ordered one to be collected from there. Indeed it is a good dealership. I was told by Citroen Online that they will not be taking orders for The Ami Vibe model from September as a model called The Ami Tonic will replace it, though they could not tell me what the changes will be…I am assuming they’ll be cosmetic. Unless bought purely for a bit of fun potential buyer’s clearly need to research who this vehicle was aimed at and it’s limitations. I don’t intend to use it too much through winter or in any extreme weather and it is there where it will face most challenges in terms of practicality, comfort and safety. I have some ideas how to personalise my Ami and if you have time to pop in for a quick chat…..don’t think I’ll bring the Mrs as her dream car is a Range Rover and last week she commented on a particular white one you had on the forecourt😂🤣

@@BarrieCrampton I agree timing an order is a bit of a dilemma…. I delayed my order a little so the 14 day cooling off period takes me past September 1st and Citroen said I can cancel the original and reorder the new Tonic model if I want but delivery would then be up to 16 weeks from placing the new order. Don’t think I will cancel but you never know…I was a little surprised when you said you ordered the Vibe and then during your clip mentioned that you might remove the decals which apart from the pretend roof rails is the major difference to the Pop….Just down the road from you is an excellent guy that does window tinting and body wraps for vehicles…that’ll be my first port of call! …As this vehicle does draw a lot of attention it could be a great mobile billboard for your business with the right graphics.

Great video! Very straight forward and honest. My only concern is it’s crash protection. I assume it can handle it but with being only up to half a ton, physics will take over in a shunt. I am a great fan of Citroen - they have always dared to be different (other than the 80s and 90s when They had to bow to PSA). I have owned two 2CVs and now have a Cactus. Hi Barry Hope you’re doing well. Very interesting review I don’t think a Ev is for me I would have a plug-in hybrid best of both worlds. Or stay with a normal powered car petrol The problem is with electric vehicles when they catch on fire then it is an absolute nightmare for the fire service to put them out. Then you’ve got the charging infrastructure which is not the best then you have the effects on the environment of the electric cars which it is not get just wait until they put tax on the charging points tax on the electric car it’s going to be like when diesels were introduced there was no tax on them. And with the cost of living going up your electric car is it going to be very cheap I don’t think it will be interesting to see what happens to the old batteries that’s one concern I have because they can’t go into landfill so I am not a fan of the electric vehicle (EV) excellent video thank you very much

I would want to use an iPad Pro 11 inch as the infortainment as it has a big screen, then, get a router in it for hotspot and since Apple route all calls through their devices, itll be great to answer calls handsfree while driving. I’m 40% there and so far, the people that i’ve made them test it out are impressed. Ideally, i would want this car after passing my driving test for commuting to work and get a cheap 5 seated small vehicle when i’m carrying more than 1 passenger

Getting this as learner’s vehicle will also make a huge difference but provisional license holders like myself is exempted from driving even after passing the CBT test for an AM license. I honestly think the CBT should have been a compulsory requirement then once you pass that you should stick an L on it since you’re a step closer to attain your full motorcycle or vehicle license

As believe it or not Lee the Macmaster on his channel got locked in his Porsche Taycan there is no emergency door open switch in the Taycan and even from the outside the door could not be opened , luckily his ex partner who he phoned had a spare key for it to open it manually from the outside but this has put me off EVs as if your in an accident the only way the emergency services could get to you in a Taycan or a Tesla etc would be to smash the windows not good.

I am in the same league as you with not been overly enthusiastic with an elect car, however as most of my mileage is less than 30 miles 90% of the time the AM is ideal. However there is a fly in the ointment, read carefully the Citroen advice on charging, on another youtube Citroen only advises using the Type 2 charger with the provided adapter, it tells you not to use a 3 pin adaptor, maybe it's a fire potential due to the ampage draw? As its going to be a UK spec why cannot they just put on a 3 pin plug?

It’s a car/quadricycle rather than an appliance so the requirement is for it to use Type 2 for charging, which it does, and not (necessarily) to come with a 3 pin plug. @@BarrieCrampton I am told the reason for getting rid of the glass roof is, first, a glass roof causes a lot more condensation on the inside windows than a vehicle without one, second, because in hot weather it turns the Ami into a furnace. In a normal vehicle they have good heaters. Turn it on and eight minutes later all the condensation is gone. In the Ami, after an hour and a half not all the windscreen is clear. It hasn't touched the side or back windows or the glass roof. The Fan sounds like a hair dryer and is next to useless. I am Subscribed to Me and Mon Ami, but, there is another Channel which is French. They show you the problems with the Door, the Hand Brake etc. Have a look, it's called ' Citroen ami test drive essais et tuto'. It has a typical ripp-off price in the UK. In France I have seen it being advertised in the papers for as little as what equates to £6,000 by some dealers. Even in Germany where they sell it with an Opel badge for an extra 2,000€, it still is cheaper than it sells in the UK. This is what people dont understand. I see ev the same as most other tech. Take computers. There were home computers in some form available since the early 1980s, at first they were quirky little fun items like the zx spectrum, a couple years later the comodore, the bbc, the apple mac. But it was 1996 that changed everything. Everyone had heard of computers, some even owned a amstrad or a atari but by early 90s they were becoming common in offices,schools etc. Then the pentium came out and overnight the whole world wanted a computer and instantly. You couldnt switch the tv on in the morning an on breakfast tv they were doing programs on how to use them in segments usually by people that knew practically nothing about them. And the rest is history. This same scenario was played out with mobile phones, with windmills, with video recorders, digital cameras etc etc. And this is exactly how it will play out with the ev. At some point and id say pretty soon everyone i gonna want one overnight, you wont be able to give ice cars away. There is a lot of fear about evs because for evs to take over another industry has to nearly die, its a new way to do something thats allready being down and tge people doing it fear for their knowledge, livelihood, their lifetime work and hobbies. But the ev will crush the old way and ivernight as they go through their moment. Fighting it is pssing in the wind. The citroen ami is another step, not quite there but a step towards that moment.

I'm hoping it can be the vehicle when I get a teenage driver, and to be the second vehicle for the house, for neighbourhood commute. Don't need loads of range, an speed limit is mostly 30-50 km/h. - I don't particularly fancy the tethered charging cable for standard socket, with the adapter. I would prefer to have type2 input, - I'm a little worried about heating/defrosting windows during winter, but as long as the windows are clear, putting on som clothes isn't a problem. + other than that, I want to do some test drives, to verify if it is the vehicle for us.

It comes with a type 2 adaptor, it will steam up under certain conditions, but im sure there are ways to minimise this, there are certain window cleaners that are supposed to help/stop this, but as a teenager i would have loved one of these, and i think its a heck of a lot safer than being on a bike/motorbike, i went out on a motorbike yesterday, first time for a while and i was horrified by the standard of driving, one guy nearly ran into the back of me while i was waiting to turn right onto a main road, if i hadnt of moved my forward leaving my front wheel at a 45° angle to avoid the traffic he would have hit me, and i was on a bike that you couldnt not see!

@@BarrieCrampton (1) my main issue with the domestic plug and a type2 adapter, is that the Ami charges at about 2 kW or 9A, while I sometimes would want to use type2 stations with load sharing, sometimes ramping down to 6A, just shy of 1.4 kW. The type2 adapter probably ignore that signal from the charging station, with the risk of overloading, and bowing a fuse. The adapter could have a smart switch to cut of, if that signal has a low value. I don't fancy risk of not getting a charge, while causing trouble for others too. Nor the risk of overloading the charging station. If there were an option to manually reduce to charging at 5-6 A, it would mitigate the problem, but tyats a manual action, and having a type2 input socket in the vehicle would be so much better. (2) Another challenge is when you want to use a charging station with a type2 tethered cable. Even if the connectors seems to fit, the pins are designed too short. You would need a different adapter for such places. Tesla destination charging being example of such locations (where they are not restricted to Tesla only). (3) Last issue is that I don't think it's a convenient solution to pull the cable out of the door frame. I've driven EVs since 2015, and have learned to enjoy the convenience of having a type2 plug ready on the wall on all places I normally park (and charge). Just open the charge port and plug in, or uplug and close. Putting the cable into the frame I think is a lot of hassle compared to what I'm used to. Throwing a normal EV charging cable behind the drivers seat, to use at public stations, would be far better.

I can only drive one vehicle simultaneously, but when we'll be two drivers it makes perfect sense to have it for the short commute.

The Ami DOES Qualify as a Mobility Vehicle. The Government came up with Badly thought out specs for Mobility Scooters. A disabled person could be going for his/her shopping and a downpour suddenly starts. He/she got soaket and if the rain got into the electrics, which it did the majority of the time, it stopped working. Countless Complaints went to the Government and they did nothing. Companies came up with Rain Protection. A Frame you put right round the Scooter then covered with a see through material. That made them longer, wider, taller and heavier than the specs. The Government had a choice, make Rain Protection Illegal or admit they got the Specs badly wrong. They chose the latter. That means the Badly thought out Specs for a Mobility Vehicle can no longer be used. According to the Government Dangerous Road Speeds start at 30mph. The Ami travels at a safe road speed 28mph. Personally I'd up their road Tax to 2 grand a year, just to try and get rid of them. As for EV's they won't be replacing the ICE. The AMI has a message for us all though, including EV haters and Range Rover egotists. It is telling you more about why not to buy a Tesla than why to buy an AMI. AMI is telling you what could be done for a fair and affordable price. Make it in RIGHT HAND DRIVE and de restricted and you've got something that will sell like hot cakes. There are similar cars being produced in China and they will never see the light of day over here, because the government don't want you to have them. I was thinking about getting one as I only have a motorcycle and now autumn is here the back roads I use are covered with leafs 🍃. This with thing could be what I need as my commute to work is under 10 miles there and back.

Definitely not, there have been thousands sold abroad, and in 2023 Opel/Vauxhall an Fiat will be releasing their versions, i think its here to stay, and there is a fantastic amount of interest in the UK

@@sandywatson you can drive one with a full moped (category AM) licence, yes. Finding an insurer that doesn’t confuse it with a car might be the harder bit.

Great video. I know this car is 'cool' and quirky in a way, and more cheap small cars are a good thing. But why does everyone love this car? It's shit. Overpriced, very low range, cheaply made, almost too slow for the roads, etc?? If it was cheaper, it would be great.
@BarrieCrampton

if it was shit, the price wouldn't alter the fact, it's not shit, and I think its worth the money but it wouldn't do for us all to be the same

@@BarrieCrampton part of the reason it's bad is because its overpriced. If price came down I'd start to reconsider. I understand why people like it though.

I'm not a big fan of electric cars and I agree that they are soulless, but this does at least have some character, its only to get me too and from work, all other journeys will be in my Range Rover or on a motorbike
