God bless the souls of Styles Scott (R.I.P.) on drums and Bingy Bunny (R.I.P.) on guitar. Steelie (R.I.P.) was on keys/piano and is most certainly on this recording. Flabba (bass) and Dwight P. (lead guitar) are the only living og members. The ROOTS RADICS have provided nourishment for my soul over the past year. My mama went into home hospice and died three months later, Jan. 26 this year. I always listen to music during my 12 hour shifts in the kitchen of a busy restaurant. Instead of hardcore & punk rock, I listened to reggae almost exclusively, with The CLASH & SPECIALS the exception. I found that there is a common thread in music created in Jamaica, by Jamaican artists: The share their music selflessly, and even the most based songs have a Spiritual vibe, and the greatest praise & thanks roots songs are jam packed with singers, players of instruments, and lyrics pointing unambiguously towards the Father God, His Son on earth, and His messengers, Rastafari, etc. So many "players of instruments" were there playing bits of one song, bits of another, percussion, strange instruments that provide those awesome psychedelic effects in most reggae songs, and they were never properly credited, and were only paid a small pittance, if at all. They were doing it for the love of reggae music, the love & pride they have for Jamaica, to support their brethren in producing an album or single, etc. So very, very similar to early punk rock & hardcore music, they didn't do it for the money but for the love of the music and getting a message out to the world, with a DIY modus operandi! ROOTS RADICS played on a huge volume of music that came out of Jamaica from 1979-1989, as did Sly & Robbie. You have helped me immensely. Even though I am not Rastafari but a Catholic man of the White persuasion, I love the Rastafari way & their Black pride message! Reggae in general has never closed the door to their White brethren or their Asian brethren, never expressed hatred of other races, never made degrading comments about modern White people or Jews or Asians or any other race/ethnicity! I have listened to hundreds of artists recordings, read lyrics, read interviews with artists, watched documentaries & biographies of Jamaican music, and I only found a strong, concrete, and very serious love of the Black race, a love for Africa/Africans, and a sincere desire to see their Black brothers & sisters lifted up and successful! A love for God and his prophets, and a real love for all of humanity, all the races! I have been hard-pressed to even find a CUSS WORD in a reggae song from 1970-1990! A ton of songs about Africa, repatriation, slaves, slave trade, and Black is beautiful. But absolutely no songs or lyrics about hatred, resentment, or scorn towards modern day Whites whatsoever! This reggae music, the Big Sound, is truly a Unity music!!

Barrington was just 19 here. I think he was 15 when "Englishman" came out! On a tiny, out of the way island, with less than "the best" equipment, probably got paid $100 for this song - but that's the least meaningful part. I'm always so amazed and enamored by the multitude of incredibly talented musicians: both singers & players of instruments that Jamaica has blessed people of every race the world over with!! I did a deep dive for six months on Roots Radics, Gregory Isaac, Barrington Levy, The Itals, Israel Vibration, Eek-a-Mouse, and Bunny Wailer. Studio One, Channel One, Sly & The Revolutionaries, Sly & Robbie, Leroy "Horsemouth Wallace," the job of "Arranger" on a record's creation, and most surprising and astonishing, Jamaica's lack of copyright laws until 1993! As soon as a song or an album was recorded, it was in the public domain!! Seemingly, anyone who wanted to could take parts of someone else's song or the entire song with new lyrics and some new horns blowing, and on hundreds, perhaps thousands of songs the horn blower is Tommy McCook from the Skatallites! As well as Bobby Ellis and Dean Fraser... This is such a trip to me! It's beautiful and Rastafari is beautiful! Jah Rastafari!

Thanks for the info. Wow, only 19 here. I see now why he sounds like a kid on his "early" stuff bc he literally was a one. 🙂

The only thing better than a great song is a great song with a great Roots Radics dub on the mix. Not to mention, this tune sounds much better than the lp version!
