Barrowmaze is a classically styled megadungeon featuring a ton of B&W artwork from 13 artists, and almost 400 rooms. Published originally as separate books, it was released as a complete version in 2017.

Good review, loved the creepy music in the background. What was it? I've been running Barrowmaze for a couple of months now and its been a lot of fun. There are a couple of key elements to the game that you didn't mention. The first is that its nearly impossible for the PCs to rest in the dungeon. That means the campaign takes the form of multiple short expeditions, with incremental progress made in each one. That provides for a lot more role-playing opportunities than one might think because the party is constantly returning to town. The other key element is that there is a lot of room for the GM to add additional material to the campaign. There are several points on the hexmap that are little more than hooks but if the GM is willing to do some work or to bring in additional modules, they can provide a good break from the undead theme of the Barrowmaze. Barrowmaze is often described as a megadungeon but I think a better way to describe it is to say its a sandbox campaign centered on a megadungon. It's a surprisingly simple setting that can easily be used for years of old-school campaign play. That's pretty awesome.

Best reviews on the internet! Good job!! Do you have any advice on how to handle maps in this adventure? Print them? Seperate them per room? It seem great book but also challenging to run.

I don’t play but a fellow DM said he printed off a new map each session, covering the area the group was in. He said he got surprised once or twice and just drew it on the fly from the book for that session.

The funny thing about megadungeons is that they weren't much of a thing back in the day. There aren't many actual megadungeons from the 1970s-80s that were actually published back then; certainly not on the scale of what we see now. But I love them and keep buying them, even though we haven't totally finished any of them. We ran 8 sessions of Barrowmaze and the players elected to stop after losing 3 of 8 members. They later played a few sessions of Highfell and lost a long-standing henchman, but picked up another. May invest in Arden Vul next, even though I have no need of it.

Brilliant overview! I would be extremely interested in a similar overview of Gillespie´s other effort Highfell. There´s barely any information about it online.

Love the idea of that many competing parties. Appreciate the review. This is the second I've watched on the Barrow Maze. It is pretty expensive 83$ for PDF and black and white 8.5 x 11" book. What level do you need to be start this adventure? The PDF is 35$ but I don't know how easy to run it would be with just the PDF.

Great review, but I disagree about the role of Helix. It is central. Players spend the most time there.

[Barrowmaze = Dungeon! X calculus] I disagree! ... I really enjoy using the book (author's own words) as much as possible. When a party enters a new area, encounters a creature, uncovers a secret, meets an NPC, etc, and there is a description for it then reading this, often word for word, gives the players the closest experience intended by the author and makes the DM's work less. A dungeon adventure like this should not be treated as a video game adventure, with no hope or need for completeness. Better to slow down and really appreciate the crawl filled with character slaying dangers.
