[FR] Ce pub à l’angle, proche du lieu central où avait lieu le WOMEX, a tout de suite attiré notre attention. Il s’en dégageait une aura particulière, un truc ancien sur fond de buildings ultra modernes. Nous sommes entrés pour demander si nous pouvions y tourner un film avec l’octuor occitan Barrut. Allan, l’un des patrons, a dit « bien sûr » avec un sympathique flegme tout anglais avant de vraiment comprendre ce que nous voulions y faire. Et nous même n’avons compris qu’un peu plus tard que The Britain’s Protection était un lieu devenu emblématique de cette importante ville ouvrière que fut Manchester. En août 1819, ses murs avaient accueilli et protégé plusieurs centaines de protestataires lors du massacre de Peterloo. En octobre 2024, il fut on ne peu plus naturel d’y faire résonner la modernité de ces voix et tambours d’obédience libertaires.
[ENG] This pub on the corner - right next to the central venue of WOMEX 24 - caught our attention straight away. It had a special aura, something old on a backdrop of new buildings. We went in to see if we could shoot there a film with the Occitan octet Barrut. Allan, one of the owners, said « of course » with a very sympathetic English phlegm before really understanding what we wanted to do. And we ourselves understand a little later that The Britain's Protection was a place that had become emblematic of the important working-class city that was Manchester. In August 1819, its walls had housed and protected several hundred protesters during the Peterloo Massacre. In October 2024, it was only natural that the modernity of these libertarian voices and drums should resonate there.
