A lot of great info here.This video really has demystified things for me and having been practicing the chord sytem, inversions and scale of chords stuff for a little while it's just what I needed to start getting used to applying chord movement in actual tunes. Can't wait to start practicing it!

Another great lessons on BH! Love those, thanks a lot! This video opened my eyes on some practicing limitations I put on myself without realising it. I only practiced 6th dim chord movements by moving all the notes in the same directions. You demonstrated here that one has many options and also that one can create a LH note movement "wisely" so that it approach the next chord bass note (ref 4th bar).

I'm sure you must have been asked this before. How did you know you needed the F and Bb 6th dim scales? How do you determine which 6th dim scales you will need in a song>. How does this concept apply to borrowed chords and secondary dominants?

You'll be amazed what you can do in just 1 year as well, if you work on the right things.

I & iii = Tonic function ii & IV = Sub Dominant function V7 & viiø = Dominant function vi = relative minor, tonic? Your thoughts? Do all chords fall into one of these three categories? Tonic, Sub-Dominant, Dominant? Is this functional harmony?

There are a couple of ways to see it. In improv, you can see it like this: I, III, VI, - tonic function Everything else is dominant. If you get the II V before IV then use the IV maj scale, otherwise, the I maj scale. Once you start using the II Vs that lead to the chords in your key, you have more flavours to play with.

I’ll call it serendipity that I found you ‘cause I’m attempting to make a transition from sax to the keys and would really like to know the best way to approach the ‘newness’ of the piano. Is there an efficient way to navigate for a beginner who’s familiar with music and the jazz idiom, but is mostly thumbs right now…and my left hand, comfortable on sax keys, is now an alien…thanks. Hey Al, I would start with Maj scales, followed by chords through I-VI through the Maj scale.

Great! Thank you. One Chord I didn't understand: C7. There would be another Scale, right? But it has no movement, so for this stage I don't need it to know, right? When I (as a beginner) try to move over a Dominant-7 Chord it sounds better to alternate with a half deminished, rather than with a fully deminished.

I think you can use the min6 above the Dominant. This would be Gmin6. That gives you C79. Sorry for my English.

There are several ways to move dominant chords. You're right though, at this stage, I wouldn't worry about it and I'd reccomend getting used to moving majors and minor 7ths.

Why did you change the Bm7 to Bm6? The melody note is an F for the entire 3 & 4 beats (G was in the 1 & 2 beats)

on the last C7 around 13:42 you play a C7 and then you seem to put a A major 6 shape in your right hand over C7. How do you see that chord?

For me, that's like a C#dim with the top 2 notes lowered to related dominant roots. C7 Eb7 Gb7 A7 are all in the same family of chords that are related to C#dim so their roots play over C7 well. Hope that helps.

You’re saying a lot of stupid things modes are not just a position in the same key that’s not how you use them. If you wanna play Toto Africa you’re playing a Lydian it is not treated as if it’s just the fore chord of the major scale. It is treated as its own creature next to that a major is a B major that makes it a much brighter scale, I was ashamed of you when you started because they are extremely important and even more important than Barry Harris have mini scales you at one point made a comment that the E7 going to a minor to you means it’s a minor. It is not a minor is a dominant substitute cord. You also said that the E flat diminished cord went to the D it doesn’t resolve to the D it can merely be a fully diminished cord that you decided to move a half step to the left, making it a D7 flat 2 which is part of the melodic minor scale but you were mentioning the harmonic minor scale knowing how to use modes is knowing how to make way more sophisticated and beautiful music jazz gets boring really really fast and I do like to mix up Barry flat six diminished scales they get old very very very fastthe reason is not very popular is because it gets old very very very fast
