One of my fave Barry songs. Reminds me of just how great he is in concert - seen him 11 times over the last 30 years. Probably some of my best concerts I've ever been to.

Hi Jay: I’ve been a Fanilow since the 70s, and I love everything he’s recorded. To see another side of him, you may want to look into his collection “Here at the Mayflower”, especially the title cut, which bears the same name. Enjoy and God bless.

Ya sometimes instruments like to not sound like themselves. I guess I’m simple minded because I’d only give an instrument something they like to do as much as possible.

I attended one of his concerts when this album had just come out, so I guess a promotional tour. I've been to about four of his concerts - one early on in about 1976, the last one back in the 2000s. Each one was just spectacular.

Great reaction! I love Barry Manilow, I had a big crush on him when I was a kid in the 1970’s...saw him in concert about 3 years ago. He sang the theme for one of my favorite movies, Foul Play (1978), a great movie, if you haven’t seen it

I bet Jay would like this one. Its called Ready To Take A Chance Again. Barry didn't write it but he definitely put his spin on it. The song was even nominated for an Academy award!

I love all of Barry Manylow's songs, even if they make me cry. He describes very well all the romantic character of his interpretations and all the accumulated feelings I carry inside. EVEN NOW and WEEKEND IN NEW ENGLAND, are super special to me. They make me cry my eyes out. Thanks for your reactions.

I've been a big Manilow fan for a long time now and just discovered this song myself in the last few years. He mentioned it in an interview that it was one of his all time favorites and I hadn't heard it, so I decided to look it up and I love it. Lyrics are amazing, the arrangement, it's now in my top 5 Manilow songs. The big hit from this album is another top 5 for me and one you need to check out. "Somewhere Down The Road", this is such a sad song but brilliant! Lyrics are phenomenal. Another of my top 5 to check out is the incredible "This One's For You" which lyrics can relate to many different scenarios in life. One more to check out is a deep cut, a song called "Sandra" which is another of Manilow's personal favorites. It's a great story song that Barry delivers to perfection. Very sad but again, it's Barry Manilow!

So interesting that you found his voice to sound older in this one, I actually thought he sounded younger. I actually haven't heard the album cut of this song in years, and I have been watching your reaction videos all morning, so I am comparing his voice to the others I watched today. Dontcha just love him, though?

Really? Interesting like straight from the beginning it felt like he sounded older to me. Like very definitely older. Ummm I’m probably just an idiot.

The piano solo (to me) is a building crescendo to the climax of the song. Another song that he does this in is "Could It Be Magic?" (the entire version, not the truncated radio version). Believe it or not, if I were to audition for The Voice or AGT, this is the single song I would choose if I could because I want to hit the emotional trigger for every one of my listeners.

Good Morning! Way to start the day! 😃. I'm glad you got around to this one...I had suggested it as well. Barry has done this one live only a few times, as he says it makes him so emotional. There is a KZbin video with a portion of the performance where you can see how he really gets into it. I love the piano interlude...I forget sometimes how well he can really play. I believe that wind instrument is a oboe...I noticed it in one of the live performances. When you are ready to do more Barry songs, you might look at his LIVE album from 1977. Lay Me Down is a really nice dramatic one, and Studio Musician is really good...he didn't write it but he says it kind of tells his story. The VSM (Very Strange Medley) is fun... Its a compilation of some the commercials he did back in his jingle writing/singing days.
@jaybrielakoi77473 жыл бұрын
This one is super duper good. Such a Barry type song. Like for me I just like how he writes and sings. If I could write and sing I’d wanna be like him. Barry super legit gets into it for his newest performances and stuff I love it.

You might also like a couple of other songs from the If I Should Love Again album. No Other Love is very romantic, written by Barry and frequent collaborator Adrienne Anderson (she also wrote the lyrics for Could It Be Magic). Somewhere Down The Road wasn't written by Barry but its a huge fan favorite, very emotional.
@melodymcdonald21403 жыл бұрын
One I just thought about... Barry wrote and recorded a song around 1989/1990 called Eolia..it's a love song with Latin rhythms, Spanish guitar, and some very nice saxophone. A classic Barry ballad. (Its on KZbin). The song was written for and used in commercials for a Japanese Panasonic Eolia air conditioning system!! It was so good he wound up doing a full album of love songs with this one included. Now that's song writing!

hey jay. nice reaction to this overlooked gem by barry. it was only released as a single in uk which hit #66. not sure if the 34 was edited since it almost clocks in at 6 min.. a couple songs you should check out are his first recorded for bell in 1971 under the name featherbed. AMY which his friend wrote which is a psychedelic pop song and the b-side MORNING which he did write. to this day they are still unreleased. AMY was produced by tony orlando. this song has strings and horns so listen for them.also check out the original version of COULD IT BE MAGIC as featherbed with different lyrics

As usual I enjoyed your review and reaction to Barry and this song which is my favorite of all of his songs. What makes this song a little unique for him is that he wrote the lyric himself which is very rare. Barry hardly ever wrote the lyrics to the songs on his album except for 2001’s Here at the Mayflower album. I’m curious what your opinion is of his piano playing on this song and in general. How would you compare/contrast to Billy Joel or Elton John?? Thanks again for a very enjoyable and insightful review!!!!

Psshh I’m not a piano player so don’t ask me about that. Lol I wouldn’t even attempt to know who is good or bad. Hey this one is good I can see why it’d be your favorite. I’m hesitant to say what would be my very favorite manilow song. I still haven’t even listened to a portion of his work. I def like his style a lot. It’s really to my liking.
