Once again, pointed out not just great concept in comics but how unique these techniques are to the medium. I love this channel.

Perfect timing. Just finished Monsters last night and along with the story, this unique lettering technique has been on my mind.

Yeah it took me a good few pages to really get into it and sort of understand how I was supposed to read it, but as soon as it clicked with me I loved it. Definitely different but fascinating.

It's almost like cutting back and forth between scenes in film.

Yeah! But also if we could see both of the shots at the same time. It reminded me a lot of Mike Figgis’ Timecode film, which would mix in and out of the soundtracks of four visuals all at once.

@@StripPanelNaked Indeed. Many thanks for your video analysis' also. It's been very hard to find a good resource on comic panel layout and composition techniques. Lots of channels on drawing, inking and colouring comics but few on actual page design, architecture and construction. Many thanks.

I saw some of this as a flaw, (Will Eisner would not approve!)about the only complaint I had about Monsters, (which....I can't even talk about how profound this book is, and how much it will be,like your favorite lps, you don't like it as much as you think you would, but you know that you will.) I think I will get "get" the flow of the balloons on rereads as I will many others things now. Some of it the order seemed unclear. So this video was great it made me realize the one "flaw" is actually a strength.

You didn't mention the use elsewhere, the "full" balloons with the unreadable script when the dad is ranting. Also, what about the "background" balloons that are placed behind door frames as "background" noise. That's genius as well.

Great analysis, although I don’t share your enthusiasm about the results. The Pages of MONSTERS are, I find, both cluttered and cramped, with figures smashed together and the “perspective” of each panel bouncing around either melodramatically, in some cases, and pointlessly in others. The lettering strategies contribute to these problems as often as they fix them, making the experiences of navigating the page more incoherent and maddening. (I wonder what you thing of the occasional uses of expressive lettering, like the WAHWAH crying or the HAHAHA laughing.)

I said in another reply that it took me a good few pages to get into it, sort of like attuning to Japanese comics the first time you read them or something. Once it clicked for me I really found it fascinating- but not everything will work for everyone! And yeah I loved most of what I saw here, lettering wise. The almost demonic language parts were fantastic I thought, too.

Hi man, this is a bit offtopic, but i'm doubting about something and think maybe you can help. So i remember when the autor put something that already happened in a comic, like a flashback, to make clear that the panel is a moment in the past then them use a black gutter, but i don't remember where i read it or listened to it, so how you express past, present and future in the comic? Sorry for the bad english and if i can't be as clear as i want, hope you or anyone in the comment can help.
