Glad someone mentioned U2's AB. Nowdays its cool to hate on them but people forget that at the end of the day they will be remembered as one of the greatest bands ever and AB was them at their peak. Not a single weak song in that album and most of them sound different from one another yet still come together to make one of the best albums ever imo

It has to do with the change of focus within the mainstream. (And the flow of cash). Obviously there's tremendous amounts of amazing music produced everywhere in the world - only it's often on a budget and has little chance of reaching wide audiences - unless you know what you're looking for... The early 90s were a period when the conventions of what is ok for the mainstream to present have been temporarily toppled with the success of Nirvana and alike artists (as well as new underground genres)- similarly to what happened at the end of the 60s and during the punk/new wave period. In the late 00s/10s the mainstream labels were already on top of the new "indie" fad, but bought it wholesale and sold it in such a dumbed-down, commercialized format... Then came streaming, and the promoted playlists, the downfall of the radio/music tv/independent music journalism (even Pitchfork seems to be doing sponsored reviews for the likes of Taylor Swift, etc). Much more power for the corporate nowadays over the bottom-up movement of music production promoting real artistry. Trends dictated by the major labels, with schlock disguised as 'deep' or 'independent'/'artsy' - that's the trick they use. But yeah, regardless. Each of the decades had amazing, amazing music in all kinds of genres

My possible favorite of the '90s is a bit of a dark horse: it's Tom Waits' "Bone Machine" from 1992. The album feels like the apogee of the junkyard soundscapes he had been exploring in the previous decade, and it's couched in some of the darkest, most apocalyptic songwriting of Waits' career. Truly a desert-island album from a songwriter's songwriter.

Interesting list, however I’m always staggered how Suede constantly gets over looked in these lists. Dog Man Star predates The Bends, the Grandiose ambition of this album set the template for Radiohead’s next two albums as did their self titled first album pave the way for Brit pop and yet they have been written out of history.
